I don't think there is a lack of effort, that Benji has lost the team or even that we are playing any worse than the last few seasons.
If anything- the efforts from the players, despite the bad results, should be the focus.
Bula chasing down the Sharks winger after the intercept. Pole running down Trindall despite the scoreline.
There is still a significant balance issue in the squad when it comes to output from key positions. There is also a significant lack of experience across the squad.
We cannot generate momentum. We cannot get across the tryline or maintain pressure the way most sides do. More concerningly- we cannot win physical contests in defence & put the opposition on the floor. And lastly, we do not promote the football.
Some of those things are being taught. Some of those things are addressed by Luai & Turuva. Some of those things will become less of an issue as guys like Latu Fainu, Makasini, Fa'agutu, Miller etc become part of the matchday squad.
Mostly- we have depth issues. If we are injured- the quality of player brought in is not (currently) up to a standard that negates any drop off. Additionally, we don't have the quality in the depth to push & replace some players who are holding 1st grade spots & not exceeding. And while our half & five-eight are upgraded from last year, I would bet there are only a very small amount of teams that would play Sezar or Galvin in their top squad this year.
Most scoff at being called a development club, but our squad is simply that- developing. So many juniors filling roster spots- we are going to encounter issues until they either get filtered out or force their way into 1st grade (note- force their way, not play) I'm still firmly believing we are going the right way.
It's not skill we need to add. It's players that stop us being bullied. It's ok to lose & learn. Having players cut through the middle simply because we cannot physically match up, is disheartening & doesn't give any skill players the chance to grow.
I think the team misses Alex Twal on the field. Sione Fainu, Sam Fainu & Pole offer pretty much all the 'skill' players needed to make our forwards effective. It's losing the one-on-one battles between Utoikamanu, Klemmer, Seyfarth etc in the middle that allow the opposition to build momentum. We lack guys that stop the opposition doing what they want.
