John Bateman #268

Yes, I think Benji has been underwhelming up until now. Let’s hope the next phase is full of astute decisions and purchases.
I’m more concerned than ever that Benji doesn’t know how to deliver messages to his players in the right context.
Also factoring in Bateman is correct in saying it is not just the senior players under performing and letting the team down, some of our younger players are protected species who constantly get away with dushing up crap and still get put on a pedestal.
With comments that Stef doesn’t believe we are heading in the right direction further backs this up.

Well Gordy said the other night “ at the moment the Tigers are a club where your career goes to die”, that must have been comforting to Luai, Galvin, Faines and others !
As it currently stands he is correct.
The frustrating part about it is we have 3/4’s of a team of talented players and only need a handful of good quality recruits to replace the players no longer wanted or needed and we would instantly become a much better highly competitive team capable of making the top 8.
Far less changes are required to turn us around than many think, but if we cannot and do not offload the players no longer wanted or needed and replace them with genuine NRL quality players that can improve our team, than we will just continue to spiral into a worse position than we are in now.

Unfortunately he is probably correct at this point but I just feel if we are able to attract 3 or 4 new players of quality , not super start just guys that play for 80 minutes and have a crack plus Luai and Turuva that out look on the club will change , the major factor hear is quality not left over busted unwanted players ,
you only need to look at Stef this year he has had about 3 good games max and only plays 1/2 a game , this needs to be replaced with either a Prop that goes 20 min then 20 later and just plays flat out , makes a big difference

At this rate Luai will have to be Superman to make an impact.
Our forward stocks are dwindling fast and those that are left are plodders and potentials.
Just when we thought things couldn’t get any worse, we were wrong. Richo the saviour is not filling me with confidence, Benji is right under the pump both internally and externally.
Where does it all go from here ?

Who knows what really has happened in the sheds after that game, but if the gossip is true and Benji has had a go at Bateman after that performance then I have absolutely no problem with it. In my view there were a few others that he should have had a go at as well!!

Impossible to please the Benji haters, he stands up and tells the senior players that they aren’t performing, makes the changes everyone is crying out for, deflects from the players when he sees the need by blaming himself for performance, promotes the kids when he can - tough job doing this and getting trashed by club fans 6 months into his first season.

Benji has got me more excited this week then I have in a long time. I love he has stood up to the senior guys.

What would Stef know, he's a meat head.

I'm not calling for Benji's head on a plate, but if what's being reported is true, he has well and truly failed his first test as a coach.

Bateman should absolutely be moved on, but the reality is that senior players set the culture and tone at a club and the successful clubs are the ones where senior players are often delivering messages to players rather than the coach.

This isn't just me saying it, it's pretty well known in league and professional sport in general. Even hardline coaches like Ricky Stuart take this approach.

As much as we'd like to live in a world where the coach taking a tough stance with a senior players in the panacea to our problems, it's not.

Bateman has been on a downhill trajectory for some years. Any thought that he would regain his Canberra form after a middling few seasons in the inferior Super League was deluded.

While his public spat with Benji is a further source of embarassment for the club, if he decides to abandon his contract now it will be a huge win in the long run.
Benji very smart, pushed Batemans buttons to the point he walked out…"he won’t be back next year…

But he isn’t correct on it being a place players careers die.

Coaching wise it’s correct, player wise isn’t.

Those who have left or leaving are moving onto better scenarios and most getting better cash deals than their current deals.

Reckon it was intentional Yoshi?
look, Benji was peeved at our Senior players and their performance….especially our captain Bateman who should be setting a good example…Benji has Also realised what a dub buy Bateman has been and will do what he can do move him on rather than carry him for another 2 years…so to answer your question 100% Benji pushed his buttons to the point he walked….good…

I think he’s talking about those that are staying.
Maybe time to take off the rose coloured glasses MT.
We all want the place to be better, it’s just right now it ain’t !
