Don't get me wrong, I love Api and what he brings to this team. I just wonder why we are sucking so much with what we actually do have.

I think it’s our coaching

Any good coach should be able to get more out of this forward pack.

Run hard and fast consistently that’s the key

When have the tigers ever done that? Flanno and Bellamy teams do that

Even when Benji and Robbie were playing - our team wasn’t consistent and you would never say that we ran hard and fast and were tough. (Exception Garth Ellis)

Imagine how pumped we would be if we signed iPaps and stefano and Bateman for next year (if they were at other clubs now) … everyone on the forum would be like “we’re going to win a comp with that pack”…. Well we had it for two years and won two spoons… lol
 
Just on the narrative that Bateman gives away lots of penalties and isnt putting in this year...

Having played just 12 games:
  • He has given away 6 penalties. Thats 1 every 2 games. He is ranked 77th in the league for giving away penalties...Sezer, Api, Stef and Seyfarth are all worse offenders.
  • He has made 11 errors. Less than 1 per game. He is ranked 97th in the league for making errors...Bula and Api are worse offenders as well as most of the best players in the game.
  • He is averaging 95m per game with the ball. 4th best forward returns in the team and the 2nd best of our backrowers behind Pole.
  • He is averaging 31 tackles per game. This places him third in the team behind Api and Twal.
  • He is averaging the most offloads in our team at nearly 2 per game, placing him 8th in the whole comp.
  • He has missed 23 tackles. Just shy of two per game. He has returned the 20th worst ratio of the squad.
I will say that his linebreaks and tackle breaks have been sub par.

He is being scapegoated by fans on here. Is he setting the comp on fire? No. Is he the main reason we are losing? No - he's doing a lot more than most of our team.

But what is effecting his drop in form?
I think Luai will really shake up this joint with a Richter scale reading like no other player has, if we can only get one good season from him.

Api has been somewhat ineffective this year because he is being targetted in defence and the coaches are not giving him a breather due to this extra workload he is being saddled with. The bloke is attempting over 50 tackles every week when his strength is his attack.

I don’t think he is a scapegoat and his stats do look ok , but he seems to make these mistakes or give away dumb penalties at crucial times

Wow!! If those stats are correct ( and I believe you ) I feel bad for my perception of Bateman. I had him as a way worse offender. Maybe I have noticed his mistakes come at bad times/lead to points. But still I owe him some sort of an apology.

Yes that is the general consensus isnt it?
I suggest it is a narrative being pushed that evryone is just believing to be true.
The fact is, in his past 5 games for us, he has not given away 1 penalty or ruck infringement. Not 1.
He has only given away 6 penalties and 2 ruck infringements all year!

He just makes no impact whatsoever in attack. doesn't run hard, runs sideways infact. Makes dumb offloads, and makes horrific playmaking choices

If he doesnt come back, that is a bad look for us. Two current Internationals have gotten out of their contracts early and we just let them go with no replacements. It hurts us in the marketplace and it hurts us on the field as no one in out top 30 is able to cover for them currently.
Our forward pack will be decidedly weaker without them and if Stef goes as well, we are almost a shoein for another spoon.

I'm not too sure anyone is saying he doesn't put in. I'm probably his harshest critic and even I say he tries hard.

Just on the penalties situation, its more the timing and complete stupidity of the penalty that's the problem. He has a habit of doing it on the 4th tackle when we have just had a good defensive set, and it often looks completely deliberate. Take our first game this year against Canberra, we defend our line, Canberra don't look like scoring, and on 4th tackle Bateman gets up at marker and deliberately hits the ball out of the player playing the ball. It was mind boggling. They then kick the goal, and score next set after bad defence by Toa. 8 nil just like that because of brain dead stupidity. We should have had the ball coming out of our end at nil all, instead it's 8 nil.

He has costs us badly like that all year. The amount of times I've screamed "bloody 4th tackle and he does it again". They aren't 50/50 penalties, they are blatant and sell sabotaging.

On the odd occasion this is correct. If we drilled down into every squad members penalties and infringements we'd be coming up with similar claims.
