I recall the knights sticking for awhile with Nathan Brown and nothing to show for it. Likewise the Dragons going with Paul McGregor and us going with Madge.

^I think there is a key difference here. The Titans were fickle with Holbrook, The Dragons stayed with Mary till it was impossible, likewise the knights.

Obviously every situation is different. But in Madge's situation, he had a handful of salary cap crushing, long term contracts that really hampered him. Could he have done more with Brooks, Mbye & Packer? Probably. But he was rarely able to compete in the market for guys he wanted.

For mine though- his biggest failing & the thing that excited me for the Sheens return, was the lack of junior players coming through the ranks. If you can't buy the players you want- you have to develop them. And he just didn't.

When Madge won the comp with Souths, Adam Reynolds, a local junior, was in his second full season. Rookie juniors Alex Johnston, Api Koroisau, Kyle Turner, Dylan Walker all played in the grand final.
 
I know that was a somewhat more inspirational performance but it was still another 40 points conceded. Benji and this team this season has now taken the record of most games in a season conceding 40 points or more.

If were talking coaches who did not get a fair shot, it wasn't Madge.
Madge eventually got enough players under him to do well, and we sunk. Take Flanagan at St george. Only Luc L was the only name to join them that I would rate at all and they have really grown as a side.

Ofcourse Ivan Cleary and Mick Potter may have gotten us further with more time...

But, there is one coach who could gotten us further if given more of a shot.

Jason Taylor.
2 seasons only.
Yes I hate him, 100% awful person. Yet if were going to play the "just give Madge 1 more season. he would have gotten us back on track" OR "hey if we kept McDaniel in recruitment then Sheen's coaching would have been awesome"... then lets get better hypotheticals. Jason Taylor would have done more in 4 years then Madge, I hate him, he should have trained a kicker, but he can coach.

Taylor of all the coaches had a roster that was the one that had the makings of a something special and instead of cementing the squad he completely divided them and we have never recovered.
He may have a good footy brain but a head coach can't be consumed by personal vendettas at the expense of what he is employed to do.

TBH..it was Farah who was the major distraction at that time..knife poised to do what he did to Potter..and not discouraged by the club or its pissweak management
..and Farahs still here!!!!

Taylor was a modestly talented coach..probably a better assistant tbh...but wld have done a job in the right environment,and deserved better...and with a couple of 9ths(which we;d kill for these days)..accompanied by strong manageent,we wld have progressed north on the ladder rather than the dismal downward spiral to todays desperate situation
Theres no escape for some time btw,unless we snap up a proven coach to turn the ship around..and weve missed that opportunity

Farah... Payten.. everyone has a different story as to why Potter was not given another contract, and the Bulldogs did much the same when he was interim there - that's a Potter issue.
It doesn't excuse the actions of Taylor and his decimation of a squad that wanted to play together who in the end couldn't get out of there quick enough.

Wasn’t it Madge who promoted Adam Reynolds to the top grade to replace the loss of Chris Sandow?

Only coach who never got a fair shake imo was Potter. Taylor had us going backwards imo.

I agree.

Which is why I am sick to death of all the Madge talk.
Look I liked Madge, he seemed like a good guy. But he wasn't working and was driving us into the ground.

Potter, I reckon he could have turned us around if Tallis did not set up Farah on air. Had that blip not happened he would probably had gotten another season and stabilized the club.

I'm no Taylor fan,but am a fan of facts and results...he got us into 9th spot and developed several young players to a situation where they were high $$$ players to be attracted to other clubs.
Board and let both Taylor and Potter down
facts suggestTaylor did an OK job..as did Potter tbh. who did it again at Dogs as interim coach but never got a look in .here or at Dogs
What got us going backwards was the poor choices to replace the big 4...plus an interim coach in Cleary who was talented but uncommitted to the club,and recruited accordingly...
then a poor coach of developing players in Madge.Good guy,but useless in our situation
Then throw in a self serving egotist and proven failure over past decade in Sheens.what cld possibly go wrong...?
AND ...if that's not quite enuff,recruit an untried and unproven coach for a 5 yr deal over a long lunch
Joint is a disgrace
Hopefully Richo can turn around the Titanic..

I often wonder how diffrent things would have been if Cleary stayed and developed some of our youth.
