Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Nope . Betsy pretty much gave it away , in the BTR podcast . Said we weren’t strong enough , led to retreating defenders which led to poor play , like infinite penalties / sin bins , lazy defence etc .
Said they’d figured out to quantify effort areas , and that when the guys were hitting thier targets on the effort areas , we’re winning or putting in good performances .
If that’s not a shot across the bow , towards the high performance team , than I’m not here .
And he’s 💯 right . We looked too weak at times , and because of that we were getting tired out earlier than most teams . We couldn’t stay in the arm wrestle because we weren’t strong enough .
I also know I heard a player give an interview where they alluded to the fact that the reason we play soo expansive out of our end was because we didn’t have the thrust and power in the back 3 , so we had to manufacture ruck speed .
There’s that word again Power / strength . I think they got it wrong this year . That’s Peter Moussa and his team . South’s by the way , suffered from the same thing . They looked to be outmatched physically .
Mate you are spot on and its obvious to all except our coaching staff. The spoon bowl wether we give all type of excuses, truth is Benji wanted it bad, the team carried on like they wanted it bad and they go out and produce that. 60 to the second bottom team in a so called must win game. Concerns,: how many players are we replacing in our starting 13 and what teams do you think will finish below us next year even with players signed and consider players leaving.. We need a lot more than just 2 forwards. I hope im wrong. We desperately need power especially in D.

Wasn't a spoon bowl afterall. The media made it that way. The sheep bought it.
It was a game that would have given our club a massive push , but they folded like a deck of cards . Yet we continue to keep picking these useless players , why is it that we always pick small light players , when was the last time we had juniors who are tall , fast , and good body shape

Sniffing around a sharks forum, there wasn’t exactly a lot of happiness and glee about his premature departure.

So as we know, we target for positions.

And if I’m recruiting for us, I’m spending half the day figuring out mischiefs to suck in my favoured players into the vortex.

Lies become misunderstandings at the signing of contract time and ye olde promise of an upgrade in 2027 spills forth with fingers crossed.

This is what we are up against.

And I know from connections, Ricky Stewart’s team, they really do their homework on players they target.

So I guess the point is we cannot play under pressure. Big games? It's too much for their collective brain. Who is responsible for the collective? Everyone believed we had a chance, you, me, every tom, dick n Harry. Except the players that don that black, gold and white jersey. Who chose Feledy? Why choose him now? For this game. Not just that? Sukker? Apart from anyone else who needed an excuse after the game?

Ha, 60 mins, you’re dreaming X.

Unless I’m totally misinterpreting what I see week to week, the starting middles often play about 20 mins (maybe a little more) then are replaced. The replacement middles play until about the 60 minute mark (maybe just short of) with half time straddling their stint. Then the starters close out the game for the last 20 or so.

So maybe the starters average 45mins and replacements 35. I think only the really rare middies like Haas push to 60 minutes and above. Thus I don’t think getting 25-30 out of a player like Hunt is a bad thing if he is a replacement forward. We have plenty of worker forwards like Twal who could push longer minutes to balance Hunt and I think the forum has been crying out for a while now for an impact middle.

Given our existing workers I think the Hunt signing makes a lot of sense assuming he continues to be used as a shorter minute impact player. Maybe something like 20 minutes in the lead up to half time and even a second 10 minute high energy stint sometime during the second half. I think that’s his role.

I'm not as concerned about a 22 year old props defence as i am about the 25+ year olds in our forward pack who are just as bad, if not worse. Twal and Klemmer are the only two props that put up acceptable defensive efforts, which is great as they dont offer much in attack.

The missed tackles by young guys is going to happen in a struggling team. It also doesn't help that we have players constantly giving away penalties forcing the team to defend back to back sets.

The positive with guys like Pole, Sione Fainu and Samuela Fainu is that they are not making bad reads in defense, rushing out of the line or giving away penalties and sin bins out of laziness. Most of their missed tackles are fatigue based and usually from defending multiple sets. This will improve with time.

The real issue are the forwards who are forwards who rush out of the line, give away repeat seats, arm grab, don't slide and leave their inside/outside men isolated in one on one tackles. Stef, Papalii and Seyfarth are the bigger concerns and two are heading out the door.

Mate it’s obvious to the coaching staff as well .
But that’s why preseason is absolutely crucial . You’re not going to know until the trail games where you are at .
It’s like an F1 team thinking they had come up with all these designs to turn up to testing and be 1/2 sec per lap behind everyone . Doesn’t seem like much right ? That’s 35 seconds over the course of a race , which is basically due to traffic congestion , racing conditions , guaranteeing your getting lapped .
But there’s absolutely nothing you can really do , outside of making a few minor changes . The offseason is absolutely crucial in modern elite sport .
Seriously it could simply come down to guys deliberately taking it easy at the start of preseason testing , so they don’t have as big of a mountain to climb by February .
It might not even be the high performance but shitty legacy culture . It’s why I think lachie Galvin was such a breath of fresh air for the coaching staff this offseason . Breaking endurance records and stuff . It showed a true desire to work .
I’m not a high performance trainer or anything , but I think it’s pretty obvious we got the balance wrong this offseason .
I genuinely trust that these conversations are being had , because they’re eluding to it in puff piece podcasts . Those podcasts are not meant to be where they come on and give hard statements like last week with Richo .
