Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Benji problem wasnt necessary going away -- it was compounded with the fact that

1. He preached family over football - even though most coaches agree with this -- they still want their players thinking that they have to die on the field to win the comp

2. We were ill disciplined and horribly defensively -- which emphasised his carefree attitude

3. Our results were poor -- which again aligned more to his "time out from football" "play what you see" "lets have fun this game"

4. He is a first time coach -- that was given the job out of nepotism -- he didnt earn it like other senior head coaches that have done ten years plus.

5. The perception in the game that we don't train hard enough -- mentioned by players who have left.

It was all these things that made him going away look bad.

If Bellamy went away no one would care. Bellamy screams when his teams are up by 50 and drop the ball in the 78th minute.

The Tigers were performing poorly at the time, with people qustioning benjs work ethic and our teams performances which aligned with his carefree attitude.

If we started winning - then everyone would say he was right.

But we got smacked the next game against St George.

Benji has not earned the right to go away on a holiday mid season.

Jeff Bezos worked twenty years without a holiday when he built Amazon.

I would say this - if you had a player in the NRL who had never played before, and wanted to be an NRL player -- do you think he would have to work harder than the other players? Yes...

Benji is a first year coach -- who seemingly works less than the other coaches who have years and years of experience.

Benji not seeing that the perception is the reality shows either his inexperience OR his arrogance.

You can't ask your players to run through walls and die on the field for you IF you don't show them that you do that too -- does Benji say that? No. He says family first, footy second, most important thing is enjoying the ride.... all that is great but i bet the players playing for the Storm and winning are having better family time than our players because they feel good about winning.

Benji trying to be Wayne Bennet without the 50 years of coaching to get there.

He has to earn the respect -- not get it because of his name.

i wouldnt care if Benji went away IF we were solid in defense and discipline

I wouldnt care if Benji went away IF after our losses he said "That was terrible" instead of "I was proud of our effort"

I wouldnt care if benji went away IF his actions and words outside of that showed a complete dedication to excellence ON EVERY SINGLE PLAY... just like Bellamy.

and i wouldnt care if we were winning.

But i dont get that feeling with him. So i do care.

I don’t think any coaching staff in the NRL did that.

Can they improve? Certainly, I hope they bring in some more coaching experience.

Was our roster this year ever going to win more than 7-8 games. Not without more luck with injuries and suspensions.
I’m not talking about other staff.

We got the spoon.

As difficult as the roster was, with everyone at or near optimum, I think we could have avoided the spoon.

I liked your point, but Benji himself admitted to errors. Ironically, I applaud this aspect of his character.

Craig headed to hamilton island one bye round this season and didn’t get any media attention.

His travel distance was more than double than Benji’s. Guess that was ok?
Because he does the work in coaching with results to back it up. What had Benji done, still wet behind the ears as a coach and no results. He should be putting in 10 hours a day to compete with the other first grade coaches. Apprentices don't get or take the same leave as their masters.

Haha, no offense mate, it’s a forum. Don’t count us keyboard warriors as people around you doing dumb shit. But who cares about JH? On the shite pile now. MM was given a basket case. He just won SOO. It highlights how bad we really are. Our players didn’t like him as he drove standards. We were and are still the worst run club who have the longest finals drought (and did before he came) Maybe you are being one eyed after a long lunch? 😀

Not at all . How does winning origin do anything but reaffirm the opinion that his style works for small doses but not over a long season ?
Like are we just going to forget he lost 2 dressing rooms in a row . People just memory dump stuff I swear .
I’m not pro Benji or anything , I think a more experienced coach was actually the right answer , and a transition was a good idea (Benji should have probably started out assistant / reserve grade coach , much like one Todd payten dis with the Toyota cup sides he coached for a a few years .
You want to talk about sliding doors , we backed coaches like potter and Taylor over Payten , and even Webster .
We had the coaches in the club . But it wasn’t Madge . As much as I liked the guy

SMH / Michael Chammas:

John Bateman’s agent has contacted Shane Richardson to inform the Wests Tigers boss of his client’s intention to return to the club for the next two seasons.

The Tigers had been privately hoping Bateman, who still has two years to run on his deal worth close to $600,000 a season, would remain in England or join another NRL club to free up a roster spot and salary cap space.

It comes as an irate Richardson lashed out at a group of injured and fringe NRL players in the aftermath of last week’s defeat to Parramatta in the “spoon bowl”.

Richardson noticed a number of players sitting in the stands laughing after the defeat consigned the Tigers to a third consecutive wooden spoon, prompting an angry response from the CEO.

Sources with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity in order to speak freely told this masthead that Richardson, who was also sitting in the designated Tigers dugout to the side of the tunnel, told players they should be embarrassed and at least pretend to care about the plight of the club.

The players who were sitting behind the Tigers’ bench included Brent Naden, Aidan Sezer, Justin Olam, Jayden Sullivan and Tallyn Da Silva. The fans sitting nearby allegedly heard the exchange between the CEO and the players.

A visibly angry Richardson also demanded the players make their way around the ground to thank the fans who had turned out to watch their team earn the dubious honour of finishing bottom of the ladder for the third year in a row. Richardson declined to comment when contacted on Friday.

In the days immediately after the team’s poor showing against the Eels at Campbelltown, the club received a phone call from Bateman’s agent, Isaac Moses, to clarify misconceptions around the veteran back-rower’s future given the widespread impression the Tigers did not want him next season.

Bateman, who signed a four-year deal at the start of 2023 when Tim Sheens was head coach of the Tigers, has struggled to live up to his price tag since returning to the NRL.

He was granted permission to leave the Tigers mid-season to play under former England teammate Sam Burgess at Warrington in the Super League.

Richardson has a close relationship with Burgess from their time together at the South Sydney Rabbitohs. Under the terms of the release, the Tigers had to terminate Bateman’s existing contract. Under NRL rules, any payouts would have had to go into this year’s salary cap.

The Tigers and Bateman then drew up a new contract to replicate the final two years on his deal. The NRL would not have approved the contract termination-renewal unless Bateman went into the salary cap for 2025 and 2026 at the value of the original deal.

The Tigers, who were willing to release Bateman to free up salary cap space this year, were hopeful he would decide not to return to the club after his stint in England.

But Moses this week contacted Richardson to confirm his client’s intention to see out the remaining two years of his contract.

Several Tigers players have been told they are free to explore options at rival clubs – including Sullivan, Naden and Charlie Staines – but are yet to secure deals elsewhere.
That Pom had better be back for the start of preseason then. No BS family or international excuses, get here and start living up to your contract.

Cory Parker doesn’t like us much does he. Always ripping into us every opportunity. However his latest article suggesting we haven’t improved this season and won’t improve next season due to our lack of defensive mindset or players, is pretty true. These last few recruitment spots must be for guys like Kobe Hetherington who will work hard and plug up our middle- we need attitude in D.
IT's hard for any of the TV/radio commentators to speak favourably of the WT when we are basket case of a club and embarrassing in most of our games. 13 years since we made the 8.

One more thing, how is Melbourne to Hamilton Island twice the distance of Sydney to Fiji?

3 hours Melbourne to Hamilton Island.

Everyone makes errors. Especially rookie coaches. I give the bloke credit for his first season for a few reasons.

1. He brings credibility. Compared to other years the media has actually been quite respectful of us this year. I don’t count the DT gossip BS.
2. He handles media as good as anyone.
3. Despite having the least depth of any coach he kept the playing group together and won in rds 24 & 25
4. He’s shown an ability to recruit good players

On the other side, there’s clear deficiencies tactically but those are things I think he’ll learn, and like you said, he has owned this.

I’d give BQM a B+ grade and he basically achieved the results I expected.

Less than 10 wins in 2025 and he’ll come under a fair bit of pressure.

How do you know Benji isn’t putting 10hrs a day in?

I’m not saying Benji is even close to the same bucket as Craig, Wayne or others and deserves to be treated the same way - but do think Benji is putting the effort in.

And still nothing worked.

The entire Wests Tigers brains trust submitting ideas and insights all season trying to correct a problematic roster.

The inner sanctum would have been torturous.

Not that they found a lot of answers but to his eternal tcredit, Benji has admitted to errors.

His recourse to rookieness is a bit off, but I have appreciated him coming clean on occasion.

Realising his shortcomings is the start to fixing them.

Can he fix them? I just don’t know.
They know what they got wrong and have identified it and owned up they got things wrong, doesn’t help us now but its a start. I don’t think we will get the nice Benji next season. I was as peed off as everyone else with results but it wasn’t totally on Benji. But I get it the buck stops with him. Strength and Conditioning is the biggest change we have to get right. Everything coming out of HQ suggests this is happening. What annoys me is because Benji said he isn’t available between 5-8 people think he doesn’t do the work. I know when he was away he, Morris and Richo spoke regularly. I also know after 3 night games this year he went back to the COE to do video. Left around 12am-1am and was back at 5am the next morning.

He had sharks going ok. How can a defence coach implement anything if there’s not a united front from the top down? Ie Benji is not a defence orientated coach who goes on holidays mid season…
Actually he had the Sharks attacking well. It was their defence they needed to improve hence the change to Fitzgibbon. I for the life of me can’t understand why he would of been made our defence coach given it’s not in his resume.

It’s 40mins difference but I was intentionally being over dramatic as you’re being…

How on earth am I being over dramatic? All I have said is I agree with those who say Benji shouldn't have gone away. It's now become some big talking point. It's painfully obvious he shouldn't have gone away, but like I said earlier, it had no effect on our crap we are. Dramatic, please.

Previous management couldn’t identify character if it bit them on the anus. They signed a bunch of overpaid Prima Donnas who never wanted to win footy, they wanted to line theirs and their managers pockets.

We always passed over guys like Finucane and Bromwich etc. who win wherever the go. Standards setters. It could be years to fix the rot Pascoe and co created.

Good on Richo for calling it out.
We went hard for Finucane from memory , and we almost had him . But wouldn’t go that final year ie. this year the one where finuncane has retired because he can’t go any more . For sure he would have made a difference , but I dunno . Tamou couldn’t change these guys , could Finucane ? I think the culture was rotten , and needed a massive broom . But to be fair we got really really really lucky this year in the fact that these 18 year olds could at least some times compete at nrl level . Could you imagine if we trotted out Wakeham and those types of career KIE cup players . Seriously ?
I actually think a broom through the whole joint and bloodying kids , might end up being genius . But geez it sux when you have to watch games like last week where it felt like watching 17 schizophrenic patients play footy . Especially when API went off .
