Onitoni Large to Manly

Because he was 20 kgs heavier than everyone else playing in the halves as a kid
Now they're all fully grown,he's still 20 kgs heavier than his opposition..did someone say KFC?
Wasn’t his size. There where bigger kids against him. His ball playing was unbelievable. Difference is the no look passes cost you in the nrl when they don’t come off. Also when your defensive efforts are poor you become a target at nrl level

This is a joke of a club. Sign Bud amongst others for ridiculous money and the best young junior we have, who everyone else wants we release and let go without a whimper.
Bud was the best half on the market at the time of signing him if we new Luai would become available or Galvin would be as good as he was then we wouldn’t have signed him

Also Bud is the only one on to much

Really? Bud is the only player at the club on too much money? We have have vastly different opinions on what players are worth and their respective outputs for our club then. On Bud, we were bidding against no one for his services and we still managed to over pay him.

People talk like Richo is some kind of god that can do no wrong 😂 in all seriousness tho I think he’d know it would be a career killer letting go both large & Galvin…
I agree with all the uptalk on Richo. It's way too much.

But ... Cmon. Both Large and Galvin are super-hyped.
We get to keep 1, maybe. We have filled our team with Luai, Galvin, L Fainu and keep'd AD back as well. There is no room for Galvin.

Were 17th. If I was Large's player manager I would say GO, likewise Galvin. None of that is on Richo.

Large consequences

The ridiculous clauses in Stefano Utoikamanu’s Wests Tigers contract, where he could leave if they missed the top eight, have resulted in the club adopting a new approach, and that has cost them rising star Onitoni Large.

Large, who has joined Manly, wanted clauses inserted in his contract that made him a free agent if Lachlan Galvin signed a new deal to stay at the Tigers beyond 2026. The Tigers no longer want to do deals that can come back to haunt them in the future. Particularly when the intention is for Galvin to be a long-term Tiger. It would mean they would have developed Large for another season or two and then potentially lost him.

It is Large’s agent’s job to do the best deal for his client, but the Tigers don’t want agents setting the tone for them.

It may cost them a player or two, but the feeling is they can’t be pushovers or they will never drag themselves out of the cellar. Taking a strong stance when you are running last is a brave move, but one they are comfortable with.

Yeah Richo has been pretty clear about his hatred of that Stefano clause. Could see him not being keen on putting clauses in. Hopefully we do make Lachie a long term Tiger!

I get that, but keeping Large with that clause would have given us a plan B of Galvin doesn’t re-sign beyond 2026.

As of now, if Galvin doesn’t re-sign we’ll lose both.

Maybe he is very confident Galvin will re-sign, I don’t know.

But that’s the same mentality with the steff clause. Short term: get the signing done.

Long term the player isn’t all in with the clubs vision and walks anyway…

Edit: imagine having players that want to work hard to earn their spot?

Yeah I hope we don't end up losing Galvin and ultimately having both of then gone. But I also wonder if Latu may have then become a problem for Large even if Galvin went. If we gave in here, what's not to say he does the same thing in 3 years when his contract expires but with Latu. Large seems set on wanting a clear and easy passage to the 6 jersey.

Hard to know where we exactly stand with Lachie...but I trust Richo to get it done.

Exactly.
One thing that annoys me about this club is the amount of First Grade debuts we have handed out. I realise some of it has been through necessity, but at times it has been experimental too.
When you get that WT player # and get handed the debut jersey, it should be something that puts you into an elite club and that you just could not be ignored as a player any longer. For some reason though it feels like in our history we have handed out debuts left right and centre. It feels like a step in the right direction to not guarantee a NRL debut into a kids contract.

I don't get it. He was already locked in. He shouldn't have been renegotiating a contract with a "Galvin" clause, unless the old one already had them in as mentioned here previously?

It's long overdue that somebody at the club put the club first(i know Marina Go did try but was whiteanted by 2 on the board)and i fervently hope that Richo sticks to his guns as it will make the club stronger in the long run and that is what everybody should be hoping for even if it does cost us some players/managers who want to be in control of what we do

Well if the clauses were in his contract and the path is clearer elsewhere, is there any surprise that he wasn't prepared to sit back in a wooden spoon club while other 18 year olds are being debuted ?
While ever there is no transfer fees and young players not motivated by loyalty can't see how the club can compete when opportunity is available elsewhere.
He is in year 11

Same .. i get the feeling the feeling there may be more to this .. Manly have not announced it, Wests Tigers have not commented, he is on a 3 year deal and it’s the exact situation we said we are no longer going to accept..

Dumb comment from Weidler ..he was already under contract and Galvin’s situation would have been resolved

We do have a plan B. Latu Fainu can handle the role with ease.
I don't disagree with the sentiment but I want to point out..

Before season 2024 started, Fainu was Plan A. The Tigers went out of their way to recruit the hottest halves talent on the rise & got him, along with Sam.

Galvin was Plan B. He was already on the books before the Tigers spent big to bring in Fainu.

Other than Galvin getting first crack & Latu fighting injury for a large chunk of the season, it's conceivable that Latu is still Plan A.

All I'd suggest is- I wouldn't panic if Galvin isn't re-signing.

Also, with our great depth in the halves, the KOE halves next season could feasably be Bud Sullivan & Heath Mason. Realistically, a couple of seasons ago, we'd have been talking about those guys being our 1st grade 6 & 7.

I suspect that most of us would be happy knowing that Mason was on call if there are injuries in our starting halves.

Major problem is Moses is manager of them both I think. So I'm assuming Galvin will want clauses aswell.

IMO, Mason needs a shift away from FB, would be much more comfortable with him starting for us as a centre or backup half, but he was just shocking under the high ball. Hopefully it was just a nerves thing but he’s not a NRL fullback, tough as nails tho so think would be a decent centre

If we found Large we can find another young gun in time.
