John Bateman #268

Out of favour Tigers forward John Bateman has been linked to a move to Manly after falling out of favour with Benji Marshall.

“John Bateman is coming back to the Wests Tigers for all we know at the moment, but they don’t want him there it’s as simple as that!” said Aaron Woods on Triple M’s Rush Hour.

“What the Tigers are willing to do they’re willing to pay half the wage of 600 grand, so they’re willing to pay 300.”

“That’s why it’s very enticing for Manly because you gonna get a player at that discounted rate and Manly are a little bit light in the back row.”

Bateman spent the back half of 2024 in England playing for Warrington but has indicated to the Tigers than he plans to come back and honour the last year of his deal.
300k is made up. How would Woods know?.

If he's getting 600-650 they can pay 450-500k. If we pay half then keep him and he can play reserves until he leaves on his own accord.

torture the poor fool,.what they said n what stands now r miles apart, get out.its a business now

What’s your thoughts on some of our 2025 recruits

The 2 from the panthers i am happy with also the dogs bloke should be ok even if just for depth but hoping first grade. Not impressed with Hunt as the longer he spends on the field the worse he will be (2 x 12 min bursts at most).Bird is very experienced but injury prone imho but could be ok guiding young players.
We desperately need forwards

We already paid him $300k when his contract was rewritten for 25/26, which dropped our liability to $600k x 2. Now we’re talking about paying another $600k equal to 50% of his outstanding amount. That’s $900k of the original $1.7m. That’s a lot to pay someone for not playing.
We sound really desperate to get him out?

IMO Bateman’s relationship with the club seems past salvaging. He either plays KOE or he moves on elsewhere. I can’t see him playing NRL for us. I hope Richo can swing the deal to shift him even if we have to pay some of his contract. At this point he will detract from our season and is not worth even being at the club.

The more I think about Richo's statement, the stupider it seems.

Pretty much every other club knows now that we want to get rid of Bateman more than they want him. I don't know what bargaining power we have now.

Not to mention my initial thoughts that he should have kept this inhouse.

our only way outa this is to call his bluff and play him in cup. He’ll sacrifice some money if it’s required to move on. Though the rlpa may get involved so has a real chance of getting messy if it drags on all season.

He will, even if he plays KOE.

Listening to the Footy Talk podast with Weidler & Chammas today, host Adam Peacock said he spoke to Manly CEO Tony Mestrov recently who indicated they want to recruit another forward with a hard edge & had their eye on someone.

Simple if Bateman is serious he wants out, let us and Manly come to an arrangement if it's not the total value of his salary and he's desperate he can take a pay cut. Else let him rot in reserve grade till he pulls his head in.
I agree, I think we are in a stronger bargaining position with Bateman than we are with the likes of Sullivan given Bateman has more of a reputation.

If you have a tumour you cut it out

Use him as a back up for injuries suspension and all that , keep him in the reserves and eventually he will ask to return to England,
