As someone who’s defended Benji on here a lot I actually agree. I think there’s a time & place for it & that press conference certainly wasn’t the time for it. The vibe around the club at the moment is how the the tide is slowly starting to turn amongst all the recruitment & players lately & what better way to strengthen that message if Benji comes out & relays the message of being successful & turning this club from wooden spooners into premiership contenders. Instead we got a message about how footy isn’t everything. I noticed Richo said the best spine in the game comment after Benji said that…. I think that was Richos way of putting a bit of pressure on Benji.
I 💯 agree with you
I love Benji too don’t get me wrong
I think out of all the coaches he cares more about his players having successful family lives after footy than any other coach
But that’s the problem
He’s not employed to make sure they have happy family lives after footy (I mean I’m human don’t get me wrong - it’s the most important thing in life)
But Benji job is to win football games
I just think he’s confusing the message and if I the owner of a football club I would choose the coach who says football and winning is everything and we die for the jersey above anything else in life … than the guy who says football doesn’t mean that much in the grand scheme of life bc family is everything
He’s employed to win football comps
And yes I agree - if you listen to Richo podcast with james graham before he became tigers CEO he said that most managers and people associated with football teams don’t achieve success bc winning is really really hard and takes lots of sacrifices.
I think richo is letting benji talk his talk bc I don’t think he can control benji on that
But I do think that richo knows what it takes to win - and he’s hoping that benji will succeed but he’d also be thinking the same thing as us - benji is a super nice guy… but he may not be a killer
Just like benjis career - he wasn’t a killer - he played for love and enjoyment - and that’s what he teaches his players - but benji also didn’t give us sustained continued success … for most of his career he was 50/50 rocks or diamonds …
Again I love benji and he gave me the best ten years of my life watching him
But it’s soooo bad of him to keep pushing this message … I think we’re already seen as having a soft underbelly , a nice club that most other fans like bc we are the good guys
And Benji is a good guy
But his not a killer
Even Bennet is a killer disguised as an old father figure that jokes around with players
I’m worried we’re going to be rocks and diamonds like Benji career was and we will lose galvin if we don’t start well
I hope for benjis sake he’s successful but idk
I guess worse case scenario benji gets punted next year and we lose galvin - but at least benji got us luai and may … and we would never have gotten them without him… and we probably lose galvin anyway bc if luai can’t convince him to stay than I don’t think anyone else could
It’s all upside I guess - but I’m praying for benji - he’s a nice guy and club legend and deserves to have a coaching legacy - but we’ll see
