How will the history books remember our 20-year premiership anniversary?

In 2003, Benji made his debut as an NRL player.
20 years later, in 2023, Benji made his NRL Coaching debut (albeit an assistant).

In 2005, Benji led the Wests Tigers to their first-ever NRL premiership.
20 years later, in 2025, Benji will...........?

Upfront, I will state that I have an emotional attachment to Benji because of what he did for us in 2005.

But I think he receives little respect from a select few on this forum, considering he chose to coach an NRL team instead of being a media pin-up boy. He could have earnt more money and had a much easier lifestyle.

It is not Benji's fault he lacks years of coaching experience. He was put in an unfortunate position where his mentor, Tim Sheens, was shown the door, and he's been left to figure out the rest himself.

I am of the opinion you learn more from the hard times than you do the good.

His "Welcome to NRL Coaching" has been back to back wooden spoons. It doesn't get any harder than that.

I think 2025 will be remembered as a groundbreaking year for the joint venture where everything comes together. Players are coming back early to train, everyone has bought in. My current wave of positivity comes from Terrell May's recent quotes:

“I heard they let me go because they think I’ve reached my potential,” may said.

“Personally, I think I haven’t even scratched the surface. That was my first full year of playing first grade.

“Now that I know I’m moving to a club that really wants me and needs me, I know I will step up. I feel I’m ready to step up and lead a forward pack.”

This feels like our revenge on the Roosters for Tedesco. But my god for his first year in NRL he is an amazing talent. And if he improves 20-30% on last years form he'll be playing for NSW in no time.

It's like the stars have aligned.... we lost "potential superstar" Stefano, who showed next to nothing whilst here...... and sign one of the most in form props in the game....

With the exception of the Luai contract news yesterday, I've seen nothing but good things coming from the Wests Tigers camp so far....

Yeah, not a game has been played, we've had pre-seasons before where we all get amped up.... but this feels different.

Rant over.... I am wondering if another news article will be released in the next 24 hours to burst this bubble of a post 😏

At the time it felt like it was the beginning of a dynasty, Panthers style. In retrospect, we just caught absolute fire for half a season and no one could touch us.

We were loitering in a field and and a cloud flew over when suddenly a "lucky" stray bolt of lightning hit us and we started to play like champions, since then the club has been chasing many other clouds hoping to be struck a second time

A lot to unpack in your rant for sure.
People criticising Benji the coach are not critical of Benji the man or the player. I don’t know why you would conflate those opinions.
I agree this off season feels a little different. Not sure why but it’s likely Luai.
Everything you wrote about May is fantasy. If the Roosters think he has reached his ceiling, why would our amateurish setup be able to get an extra 30% out of him? I’m hoping we can get the same out of him as they did.

As far as being retrospective, I look at us coming into 2025 with some of the same hopes I had in 2005. Some good experience mixed with some excellent young prospects. I did not see a premiership coming in the 2004 off season and don’t now ahead of 2025. The club has barely moved the needle in 2 decades…if anything it’s slightly worse.
Can that change finally come in 25?
Stranger things have happened - such as 2005…

Let's have a retrospective come September. No one has a crystal ball and we've all thought things would be different every year since 2005, but alas here we are. Facts before words.

I remember it as Steve Noyce was a visionary. WTS were about to become the Man Utd of the NRL he said
I thought he was saying we would dominate like them. Now i know he was suggesting yhey will suck for over a decade after alex retired.

I remember the wank'athon in 2015 over the 10 year anniversary, the '2005 -2015 has a nice vibe to it' posts. And im here for it in 2025, got the Kleenex stocked up.
Lol
I'd suggest listening to the bye round podcast with James Graham and his interview with Tyrell May. Youll be doubling your boxes of Kleenex.
Still can't beleive the roosters let him go.

I remember lots of league pundits saying it was a fluke and I was really pissed off with them at the time. Sadly they were right, it was nothing but a fluke. I think WT have gone on to seal that notion in concrete in the last 20 years.

I also find it sad that we have to rehash the ‘fond memories’ of this bloody premiership year after year. No other club does this. I don’t see St George Illawarra go on about their one and only premiership win like we do, or even Cronulla for that matter. It’s quite pathetic really, this continual living off some past glory, fleeting as it was.

We came close again in 2011 and 2012.
