Taking a wrecking ball to the club! (Recent Media Reports)

The club is Western Suburbs Magpies. Supporters to this day chant “Wests” at games. Wests is the name brought over for the merger. You can ask any rugby league supporter of any era and they will tell you this is how the club was predominantly referenced. The magpie of Western Suburbs wasn’t anywhere as recognisable, valuable, or successful as the Magpie of Collingwood in the AFL. If anything, it was associated with consistent struggle and failure in rugby league.

The decision was to brand the club Wests Tigers. A one-club philosophy has to be adopted in the senior grades. That’s what we all belong to now. We all have to be Wests Tigers. Continuing with Magpies in reserve grade reinforces the joint venture, rather than one-club.
To each their own view. Mine is keep the Magpie symbol at the reserve grade. I again state Im perfectly happy with the Tiger as the NRL club symbol. I dont want the Magpie to replace the Tiger at that level and as such I have signed the petition to seek review of the governance and structure of the HBG all because of shenanigans from board members from the debenture holders.

Others here have said within the last day they dont know what theyd do if the Magpie came back and replaced the Tiger at the NRL level, many said theyd leave. Well, understand how I feel. All Im asking is to retain the status quo.

For sure, the review is just about the governance of HBG and our concerns about how a registered club controlled by a group of individuals not democratically elected can so heavily influence the direction and management of an NRL club.

I wouldn't mind a black and white jersey for night games

And a orange and black one for day games

Jerseys a whole other discussions though.

I... Sadly believe it.

I mean I have seen guys with Norths Tattoo's. We ofcourse had a few die hard Balmain and Wests fans.
It's a mental illness at that level.
Yet hey, you do you and they can do them....

Just talk to soccer fans. Imagine Arsenol or Chelsea if the British comp tried to remove them?
(I know their system and that the teams would be relegated down a level).
What about that poor bastard with the Nofo tat. 🤣 🤣 🤣

Many would leave because they are now aware who the cronies running and ruining the club are, and have been for the past decade, and what their agenda is.

A return to Western Suburbs Magpies at NRL isn’t reform or progress. It’s reaffirms the club is being run like it’s the 80s and 90s. It’s clear from the past decade they have no idea how to govern a professional sports organisation in the 2020s. Why would the ‘many’ want to continue to emotionally and financially invest in a club run by these clowns?
Im agreeing.

I just don’t understand the hang up about the magpie when “Wests” was the supporter chant, the name has been carried across, and the home jersey is predominantly black which Balmain never wore to my recollection. “But it’s got orange on it” I mean FFS! There’s white on the away orange jersey and rarely hear any rusted on Balmain supporter have a cry.

Balmain Magpies wouldn’t have worked for obvious reasons.

For senior comps, the names Western Suburbs Magpies and Balmain Tigers belong in Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield.

The comment by some senile 80 yo Rod Stewart wannabe to return Western Suburbs Magpies in NRL is ridiculous as Garry Leo’s comment back in August because it it will never happen, but is important in what it really says. In both cases, the majority of supporters incorrectly latched onto the comment at face value, when they both highlight the dysfunction at the top of WT. Leo and the BTRLFC are frustated with the same issues this petition has brought to the fore, and Burgess and co. continue to show they are governing primarily with a focus on nostalgia, they want a return to the way things were (including preserving Lidcombe), and have no grasp on what’s required for the NRL club to thrive.

Sure mate, have the Magpies at reserve grade. Have you been to a Lidcombe an oval game in the past couple of years? It’s embarrassing. Certainly no Newtown or North Sydney vibe there.
This post is how us vs them arguments continue.

When I was younger the Magpie was important and also sometimes chanted.

Not sure that Balmain Magpies would obviously not have worked. Would have had the same success and mostly failures regardless of the name (and unfortunately same board structure)

And I went to Lidcombe this year and the kids loved playing on the field at half time and between games.

Lidcombe Oval is a postage stamp. The grandstand looks like it has a capacity of about 500. You would have felt like a sardine being there at capacity.

But I’m not a Balmain Tiger or Western Suburbs Magpie. I have no history or allegiance to either. I’d be quick to howl down some Balmain-aligned tragic.

I’m a Wests Tiger. This is who we are. So to someone like me who is all-in on that basis, you can see how the emotional tit for tat Western Suburbs v Balmain arguments are frustrating.

I support the petition, not because I have anything against Wests Ashfield (I actually live close by and am a member) or Western Suburbs Magpies, but because the outdated governance of the joint, the self-interest of the exclusive clique on the board, and the effect it has on its asset which happens to be the football club I support, is detrimental not just to the football club’s ability to thrive, but could soon affect its ability to survive.
I also support the petition, have 4 Wests Tigers Memberships, I was more referring to your posts that the Magpie meant nothing and Lidcombe Oval is embarrassing

Anyone be happy if the HBG get the shits because they can't get there way and sell wests tigers who would you like to purchase them, I know highly unlikely but interested in opinions.

You obviously skipped the part where he was cleared of any wrongdoing, which is mentioned in some of the article that you would have read. Those articles also resulted in 2 defamation lawsuits.

I would think some of the Magpies legends wouldn't hold your view about seeing the back of him considering he funds their yearly reunion.

I am done responding to you, I am happy for you to continue to attack me but will hold you to account when spreading misinformation about others.
Oh, goodo.

Just going through this thread, it’s very disconcerting. The board members carrying on like twits, some posters carrying on like twits too and still can’t see eye to eye after 25 bloody years!

Mergers between two strong clubs are never easy, but geez after 25 years you’d think the problems would’ve been sorted by now. The St George /Illawarra merger was really a takeover, probably why it’s been free of the constant infighting at board level. The Manly/Norths merger was a disaster, but they butted heads from the start and dissolved the franchise before things got any worse. We apparently have continued along without sorting out any of the issues and have just let things fester into the volcano we see now. Extremely sad, I thought we were past this.
