Cricket Season Thread

Somewhat, but have you seen how few people have been turning up to the test matches hosted in South Africa in recent years? Quite depressing to see live coverage where there's maybe a couple of thousand folks scattered around an empty stadium. They must be losing money hand over fist.

Still a strong following in NZ but a LOT of their grounds are tiny, especially outside the major cities.

The answer involves something the 'big 3' don't really want to do, and that's redistributing the wealth to poorer nations.
Is it any different to here? Turnout for a couple Tests here were pitiful. Yeah, Boxing Day drew crowds, but I think that always will, because more than anything else. Boxing Day is an event. Crowds in Brisbane were disgusting. I know the weather was rubbish, but still.

Yes.

Sold out for the two days I attended (admittedly we all got refunds for day 1) at the Gabba. Not helped by starting on a Saturday so days 3/4 fell on Monday/Tuesday and also not helped by CA's brilliant decision to move it from November to mid-December.

Single day record (47,998) against India for day one at the SCG, and record single day attendances in both Perth and Adelaide too.

You really like to stick it to Australian cricket
Note the 70,000 + at day 5 of the MCG Test breaks day 5 records by a massive amount .Usually day 5 gets about 5000
Never mind your favourite team will be out here for the ashes next summer

I like when people make up narratives in their head based on nothing. Apparently im an English supporter 😅

If you can find one pro England post I have ever made, feel free to pull my pants down (figuratively of course)

Seriously? Did you you get that from Phil?

They had cheap tickets for Day 5 at MCG

$15 for adults and kids free ......bargain when you know you'll get a whole day of Test cricket

I was surprised when I first heard this ten years ago when SA decided to have thier own Boxing and New Year’s Day test, some of the talk was about how it could help draw the crowd to live games as they were playing in empty stadiums. I always thought the Saffers loved their cricket. Maybe that was just when the poms ran the place. They were talking about it again the other day/night when they were saying they had some good attendances due to good weather and performances but a bloke passed 250 on the second day and half empty. Still struggling to fill grounds.

NZ’s problem has to be domestic lack of facilities, they punch above their weight for two Tasmania’s. Imagine if they had better infrastructure and facilities.
Now just think of the commotion if the ICC took some of the profits from the Oz v India series and upgraded 3x grounds on both islands.
I say spread the gospel. Don’t relegate someone like the WI’s, spend money to get their kids wanting to live at the ground from the age of 12 until they open the batting for their country.

I thought the series just finished against India was the second highest attended series in Australian history.

Haven't been to a Test since the early 90s ....
The ashes next year?
Mrs BF has asked to do something else next summer? I don’t like her chances, one of the blokes that can this year for the first time in ten years is a Pom, so he’s already chipping away at his Mrs.
If the rest of them can afford it, I might get the $900 box tickets.

It was full this year but still ok. You had to line up for a piss but you get to know what the tiles look like. White subway tiles at the SCG.

CA announces preliminary squad for ICC Champions Trophy with our first game Feb 22nd in Pakistan
Konstas and Boland miss out ???
Aaron Hardie and Nathan Ellis and Matt Short get the nod but to me they are T20 specialists .Stoinis and Maxwell both good in 50 over and 20 over formats
Team :Head ,Marsh ,Smith ,Labuschagne , Short , Inglis , Maxwell ,Stoinis ,
Hardie , Cummins ,Starc , Hazelwood ,Ellis ,Zampa

Hardie is a legitimate first class allrounder who is a smart pick for an ODI side. Boland doesn’t have a great ODI record, is 35 and not a very good batsman. I think both of those are fair enough calls.

Yeah Hardie is technically the 'incumbent' allrounder; has just been missing some cricket lately due to injury.

No idea how MMarsh got the nod though, he can't buy a run at the moment.

I’m not a fan.
Although I don't agree with it, I think it's a concept worth thinking about.

Ind/Aus/Eng bring in the most revenue and eyeballs to cricket. India players like Kohli, Sharma etc playing against Zimbabwe/West Indies etc will not bring in even 25% of the revenue.

In the meantime, Nz vs West Indies will still develop cricket without using up the time of the "superstars".

More revenue hopefully means more money put into developing cricket in smaller countries.

But then obviously, no team or player is bigger than the game.
