Cricket Season Thread

The ICC champions trophy is only about 6 weeks away
Simple format groups of 4 so each play 3 games
Australia group
Australia ,England , South Africa ,Afghanistan
Other group , India ,Pakistan , Bangladesh,New Zealand
The top 2 each group play semis with winners play final
Action starts 19th Feb
Team not yet announced but likely to be
Head ,Marsh ,Labuschagne ,Smith , Inglis ,Stoinis , Maxwell
Cummins ,Starc , Hazelwood ,Zampa
I'd be inclined to find a spot for Konstas and Boland

The tournament is in Pakistan where India refuse to play so India games are in the UAE ?
If the ICC had any guts they would exclude India from the tournament and invite either Sri Lanka or the West Indies
Maybe someone who knows more than me can confirm, but India's stance against Pakistan is similar to USA's stance against Russia. Many other countries have taken a similar stance against Pakistan.

Moreover, there is legitimate threat to Indian players going to Pakistan with the tensions between the two countries.

Taking India out of any tournament would mean losing almost 50% of the revenue which I don't think any other cricketing organisation would want.

India playing in UAE is actually a pretty good compromise IMO, but someone who is more aware of internation conflicts can enlighten us more.

Yeah Hardie is technically the 'incumbent' allrounder; has just been missing some cricket lately due to injury.

No idea how MMarsh got the nod though, he can't buy a run at the moment.
I think what they are doing is they start with the side that won the world cup that's 10 ( minus Warner ) then add Short ,Stoinis , Hardie , Ellis

This elite test division Aus / India / England
I definitely don't agree . NZ and Sth Africa can beat anyone on their day
Yes the Windies have been decimated by T20 franchise cricket
They have so many greats with regard to hand / eye coordination but all of them make very good money playing for about 10 franchises a year and supporting their family's on all this money is far more important than test cricket .
Although Shamar Josephs superman act a year ago bought the carribean to its feet and mine .
Sri Lanka is also a worthy test playing nation although they struggle if pitches are not turning sideways
Bangladesh ,Afghanistan ,Zimbabwe and Ireland are definitely 2nd Division

Although I don't agree with it, I think it's a concept worth thinking about.

Ind/Aus/Eng bring in the most revenue and eyeballs to cricket. India players like Kohli, Sharma etc playing against Zimbabwe/West Indies etc will not bring in even 25% of the revenue.

In the meantime, Nz vs West Indies will still develop cricket without using up the time of the "superstars".

More revenue hopefully means more money put into developing cricket in smaller countries.

But then obviously, no team or player is bigger than the game.
It’s a balance, but segregation or relegation I don’t believe is the answer.

To be fair, it's already happening.

Australia is resting a couple of players against Sri Lanka.
India will be resting players as well against the lesser teams.
Yeah and that is fair enough. They will also strategically schedule playing those teams too, and that is also fair enough. It’s essentially a two tier comp as it is anyway.
I just think we should spread the gospel at every opportunity and help the minnows. There’s not enough countries playing test cricket as it is.

Just saw a stat about the other Australian batsmen who have scored 10000 runs were all captains at the time ....how lucky for Smith he will also a skipper when he breaks the 10000 barrier

Amazing win by our girls yesterday in the 2nd Ashes ODI
After batting poorly all out 180 a very low score for a 50 over game
They managed to bowl England out for 159 an even lower score
Now 2 - 0 up in the ODI's with last one in Hobart on Friday
Following this are 3 T20i matches and a Test match
All white ball games worth 2 points and the test 4 points
Don't think a test should only be worth twice that of a T20 ? Gap should be more
Anyway we are 4 points to 0 up at this stage

One good thing about being retired is i can watch it all at my leisure. So far our batting has been below par but the general fitness level is so far ahead of the poms that our fielding standards have given us a massive edge and helped in the 2 wins(Greyhounds/Clydesdales level). The bowling has also been better

Love the spinner Alana King. Great to see a spinner that turns the ball that much

Her bowled spinning past the outside edge was a thing of beauty. Love to see it
The drift. It was Warner like.
@Tigerwould
Get her in the “Open/Mens” team to Sri Lanka, Gary’s a goat.
Is there any rule that women can’t play in the “open” comp?
I get the other way is not fair, but I just want the best cricketers in the Oz team.

That English keeper did one of the all time bad efforts at farming the strike. Terrible stuff.

Good win by the Sixers tonight.

I saw a bit of that game in a bar in Ubud.
It was a good result for the Australians but fair dinkum, that shit was not international standard sport. Really low grade garbage from both.

When I said our batting poor ! I can name 3 exceptions Healy with a rapid 29
Perry with 60 and King with 13 which good for tail and helped score to 180 vs maybe 160
2 bowlers were exceptional Alana King who really rips her wrist spin leggies and got 4-25 Also Garth with very accurate off cutters 3 wickets
The other 7 need to lift their game a bit esp Sutherland who bowled 2 beamers in one over which means she can't bowl any more in the match

I was talking in terms of the "team" not as individuals, yes we have had some good individual performances with the bat but overall it has been underwhelming
