Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Our defence waivered between NRL and Reserve grade standard during most games. This wasn't coached. In my opinion this was a combination of frustration (players rushing out of the line to make the hero play/ill discipline), fitness (being unable to overcome starting sets so keep in our own half and handing the ball over so shallow in theirs), cohesion (suspensions and.injury to key players in the defensive structures and lack of depth) and attitude (not wanting to win the collision due to combinations of the aforementioned).

A different approach to our defensive structure may bring marginal improvement. Any major improvement will be based on the opposition starting their defensive sets deep in their own territory which means our attack is our critical vulnerability. Fix our attack and kicking game then the fitness, frustration and attitude will be mostly addressed.
Such a good point Jolls you are the MVP of this forum. Everyone is basically in agreeance that our attack will improve this season, and in turn that will help our defense.

Disagree Mate,
Our defence is passive as a whole, I've basically seen every team in the comp attack with their defence at some point - Outside us.
Another thing I've said, Is we don't dominate in the tackles, We catch them, And take them to ground.
It's coached and has been through many different squads in the last decade or more.

Funnily enough, On the rare occasion we do go in search of the collision, We seem to go OK.
But we can't ever do it for long enough...
that's also coaching.

We're constantly on the retreat in defence, A lot of the time we look brittle enough to bust open on ever play - Like surviving the 6 tackles is some kind of achievement. The anxiety is next level.

We've never been able to handle being uncomfortable, The good teams thrive in it. Even some lower teams are happy to get into the Grind of going Toe to Toe.

We're soft
- We don't know what high level NRL intensity is..

We've bought in some high level players that know that intensity, I just hope we don't golf day it out of them - We have enough young fellas to follow if the bar is set.
Suggesting it will be set by the coach is fanciful - His playing days at the club were the catalyst for it.

Every set starts deep in the opponents half - Attitude and Coaching in Defence is what keeps them there.

There’s zero correlation that improved attack will improve the defence, it’s still a major concern we still have the same coaching staff.

Better attack will certainly keep them starting sets deep in their half
- Better attack won't keep them there though 😂😂😂

Also forgetting their better defence will keep us in our own half.
How's that saying go - The best defence usually wins the comp.. is it?

I seen someone mention it a few days ago. The only time in 25 years we have displayed any type of grit in defence was at the start of 2018 under Cleary. The heart was phenomenal. Outside of that it’s always been abysmal. Anytime we’ve been half decent has been due to our attack.

I agree with .most of what you have said;, the key point you raise is our inability to put together good defence for any length of time. So clearly they do know what is expected of them and they can string it together. The technical aspects of the coaching in defence is there. The execution, attitude and frustration is linked,.in my opinion, ro them.being knackered too early. Unable.ro attack with their defence because of it.

Too soft, definitely. I think your points arr based on the attitude component of coaching whereas I was looking at the technical aspects of defensive play. Either way, 100%we need to coach attitude!

Having the head coach running around out there smiling his head off trying to relive his youth running the opposed sessions is hardly going to build any attitude in defence.

That's also coaching.

There is no direct link sure, but where they start their set is the foundation of the defensive structure and play In this sense they arr definitely linked

True, but how much of that does he actually do? Is it the aspect the media like ro report for views or does he have rhe balance right. Certainly many of the players seem to think that his ability to show them is valuable (in the media anyway).

Attitude definitely starts with the coaching staff and is something gx that needs to improve

More than Ivan Cleary or Craig Bellamy has ever done I'll bet.
the fact that nearly all of the squad mentions it - seen plenty of photos of it.
Would seem commonplace to me.

I'm torn on it eh. On one hand I get it he does things his own way working with the younger generation so I can understand why he does it, makes him more relatable. On the other I would prefer he stood on the side line barking orders so the players know he is approachable but not just another one of the guys. I wouldn't be jumping in, I'd just be barking orders to firmly set boundaries. But each their own I'm not nor will I ever be a first grade quality coach.

I’m pretty much to your way of thinking
I think he should show how it’s done but not fill in
If someone needs a break get the next guy up to get some continuity

Is it still happening this off season or has he retired it.

“Golf day it out of them”
Love it!

Wonder what’s worse, Golf day it out of them or White water raft it out of them. Hopefully the army camp it’s into them

No idea mate, I only vaguely remember someone saying he would hop in to give Api a breather but for the life of me can't remember where I saw it. Havnt heard it mentioned in a while though to be totally fair.
Personally think it's time to give away the buddy system now mate, put someone else in he has given instructions to, show them the games are over he can still give them a cuddle when needed.
