You know in 2016 I told my wife to stop worrying about a potential Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon presidency, but it was a bad one and I was naive to dismiss the impacts of the US on Australia, especially radical shifts.

So if Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon does culture wars and other nonsense, and wins, lots of Western right wing parties try the same thing. Dutton is trying a lite version of it right now.

And then if Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon decides to tariff Australian exports, or start another economic war with China,
we lose out bigly because of our large trade deficit with the US and large trade with China. Already the Aussie dollar has taken a battering the past 12 months because we are highly susceptible to capital flight to the USD as well as shifts in commodity markets. Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon could try to cancel AUKUS.

You want an American president who places nice in the international arena - dependable and reasonable, with an international outlook. That allows us to mostly ignore their domestic politics. But Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon's nothing like that, he's mercurial, selfish and arrogant. He's already clearly trying to push the US weight around internationally with pressure tactics, already poking Canada, Denmark, Mexico, China, Colombia. We don't want a partner who is that selfish and unreliable, it's bad news for world trade and Australia.
Yeh honestly the culture wars thing is becoming boring… Albo tried to do it with the whole Voice thing then it backfired in his face now Dutton is trying to do it with this whole not flying the Aboriginal flag BS. Don’t know why both sides try to leverage Aboriginals so much just make some reasonable policies about lowering the cost of living & housing prices please

Siri set a reminder for this guy to tell me how climate change has nothing to do with CO2.

Also set a reminder for him to tell me how pizzas have nothing to do with cheese.

I just spat out my coffee. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Sending illegal migrants back s one thing but the ones born there can't under the Constitution so that's another legal minefield.

That one will be an interesting one SeanT. A Republican judge appointed by Reagan has already stopped it. It will go to SCOTUS for a ruling on the 14th amendment. The 14th was originally ratified for the freedom of the slaves.

So far ive seen a few arguments.
*One born in the US should automatically be granted citizenship per the 14th
*Foreign citizens such dignitaries i.e. If an ambassadors child is born in the US they are not automatically a US citizen
*You dont get to keep the proceeds of a crime. If you rob a bank and are caught you dont get to keep the cash. If you commit a crime by entering the country illegally you have no rights to the 14th as its for US citizens and by extension neither does you child.

The SCOTUS ruling on that one will be very interesting................... and years away from a decision.
Years away. That's the issue. So many legal rulings will be going on in the next 4 years people won't have a clue what's going on.

There should be things put in place for illegal migration. However ripping the band off like this will cause all sorts of issues. Especially in agriculture where illegals work for less than minimum wage. They leave and you have a whole lot of produce that can't be sorted and sold.

What happens if say Columbia says that this person was born in the USA and sends them back because they are American? Interesting.

Im not for my slaves are here to pick cotton mentality.

The picking the fruit argument is a terrible one and an immoral one and a losing one. Big corp using exploitive labour for bigger profits is not a winning strategy, the people voted for this to happen in the election.

7 million men are currently unemployed in the US, and plenty of ex government workers are soon available lol. A very small percentage of all illegal immigrants are fruit picking, most have ended up in large cities like NY LA and Chicago on welfare.

7 million men are unemployed who won't go and do the work.

If you stopped workers from Pacific islands working on farms here you will see prices go up

More than two-thirds of U.S. crop workers are foreign born, according to the USDA. Many of them came to the country through the H-2A visas, but officials estimate that 42% of the workers are undocumented migrants.

This is from two years ago...

That CBS article snippet you copied and pasted has zero citations for those stats.

This is a good read.

I still dont get the slave labour is ok because prices argument. It doesn't hold up for the self righteous left does it?

Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon released the Drone invasion explanation today. I know old Joe was too busy eating crayons and shitting his nappy and completely absent from thought for 4 years but how the fark did his shit for brains administration not release that. Useless wankers.

I'm not sure this captures the full range of choices available.

You could pay illegal migrants low wages and keep your fruit prices artificially low, or ensure the market wage rate is paid to make it attractive enough for people to do this as a job.

Illegal migrants don't go straight to the fields and work. Many don't work at all and end up being a net cost to the tax payer. If fruit prices go up, but your taxes go down because you aren't footing the bill for the other associated costs with illegal immigration, isn't that, on the whole the same position? What if oil prices come down and reduce the cost of shipping, offsetting the higher cost of labor? There are more levers than just labor that go into the cost of a product.

Nothing wrong with providing visas for fruit picking work if there are difficulties attracting staff. That helps industry fill gaps. These visa workers are paid according to the wage laws, so not sure they would be getting paid less than anyone else willing to do the job. In Australia, our fruit prices would not change if the worker is legal. It doesn't matter where they come from.
