Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Man if you don’t think there’s going to be a downturn in Galvins performances , then I don’t know what to tell you . I’m not saying it will be 6 weeks , a season , or like Tim smith or Mortimer junior a one year wonder … I’m not saying any of that , it’s just inevitable there will be a downturning performance , in which Galvin and the club will have to counter . I mean we saw it really , well the beginnings of it , at the end of last year .
Im not going to fanboy a 19 year old .hes a prodigy to be sure , and i hope he can lead us to glory , but there’s a reason nearly every player suffers from the dreaded “second year syndrome” . The best ones just only suffer from it for a few games , and move forward … the worst ones , well I just mentioned a couple .
Sounds like youre describing a few off weeks...every players can go thru this.
Its not 2nd year sydnrome

Thats not a given and is likely the reason his family is pushing for a new start elsewhere.
As per the point we were discussing.
It doesnt matter a shit how good he currently is, its all about how good he can become and thats where the development debate is being held.
One of the smartest comments to date.

I'll guarantee you that development is on the minds of many of the younger players and their families at the Tigers!!

Have neve been happy when receiving a penalty for this infringement and utterly spewing when our team gives one away.

Would rather the ref sent them back to play the ball with their foot than have some penalty attached. The stop in momentum by having to go back is penalty enough.

I'm not against playing the ball properly, but handing over possession is too harsh.
Such a great idea @weststigers

There's many questions to be asked regarding where Galvan is, and where he will/might get to in his development.

On one hand- he was really good for a 1st year starter. Invariable anything 'good' we did had his involvement in it. His fitness levels seem outstanding. The game didn't look to be too big for him.

On the other hand- he shone in a terrible team. Not exactly hard to stand out when the rest looked so bad. He made a number of errors through trying too hard. I think his defence is much worse than anyone wants to talk about. And I don't mean technique. His reading of defence, if you pick it apart, is pretty ugly.

I keep going back to this- the Tigers went all out to sign Latu Fainu. They brought in Sezar. Sullivan. And chased & signed Luai. All the while with Galvan on the books. In the Harold Matts winning side, Galvan was 2nd Row & Heath Mason was 5/8.

Galvan wasn't supposed to do this well. And the club had/has Latu higher rated at the least, given the money invested.

Galvan's fitness & willingness to get involved put him ahead of the rest. I suspect his ability in comparison to some of the others isn't significantly better.

I'd be very, very careful with his future contract. This has Luke Brooks vibes. And I wasn't a critic of Brooks. I believe effort goes a long way. But you shouldn't sink your salary cap into effort.

I still believe Galvan is destined for the back row. Maybe the guy we signed to play back row is the best comparison of where I expect Galvan to get to- Jack Bird. I think he's that kind of player level- if he hits his talent level.

Can’t be much training going on at the tigers. I’m out at the NSW state oztag championships at Penrith. Seen John Morris yesterday and today coaching one of the teams. Heighno was out here yesterday with the Central Coast team as well.

Back row or lock will probably happen in 4/5 year's time, long way off yet.

What do you mean the tigers didn't develop Benji? Didn't they grab him from nz and put him in Keebra Park (where he was still a student when he debuted)?

Or do you mean the player he eventually became? Because honestly, I think he became a better player overall away from WT.
I don’t think we had anything to do with him going from NZ to the GC. That he ended up with us was more dumb luck than good management. Keebra had just switched to us after Canberra ended their partnership. In an alternate universe Benji is down in the capital and we’re complaining about Ricky’s latest 10 year contract extension…

What I’d love to know is (and the question isn’t directed at you personally) if he “destined” to be, say a lock, I’d compare him to Yeo: what is yeo being paid? (as what I see as the pinnacle lock)
See your point but if he outgrows 5/8 which is a long way off after he achieves big money, his value will come down no one will pay top 5/8 money in the forwards only top props seem to be getting that now, well there is Fifita but that was stupid money.

That was all mostly natural instinct.
He was doing all the same stuff as an Oztag and touch player.
100 percent Tucker, that's where it's all relative, some people will say that's prime Benji, others will say the more mature controlling half was prime Benji.

I'm not being cynical, but I feel like there is this false prestige attached to the Golden boot; it's like people think it is awarded to the best player in the world that year.

It's not. It is awarded to the player adjudged to have been the best player in international games that year.
I understand, just pointing it out as when he won it, is it a prestigious award depends who's being asked. I think the international game has come a long way and hope for the best for any player in them, but me personally could care less about them.
