Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Depends what position... if you're asking a winger (in football) to make a Rugby League tackle no they probably wouldn't be able to because their game isn't built on strength but if you're asking a Centre Back or a Centre Defensive Midfielder or even a Striker I think they probably could.
I know of a lot of kids/youth that have played both and the ones who ended up choosing soccer develop a lot of good traits, particularly around toughness which helped them stand out as a soccer player.
In reverse I have heard of a few players over the years who have played soccer until their late youth and then made a successful switching rugby league, Colin Best former Sharks winger is one that comes to mind.

Geez slow news day in the signings forum 😂

In regards to soccer players who turned to RL

Herbie Farnworth was in the Manchester United system until he was 16 & switched to RL

Hazem El Masri switched codes I think in his last year of HS . Probably why he was such a great goal kicker .

Didn't know that about Herbie. Wonder why he switched. To be fair Manchester haven't done well.fpr along time. Might of thought League be easier to win a comp haha

Yep
Used to do my head in seeing 1 or 2 players having a cigarette in the change room at halftime while the coach was giving advice for the 2nd half.
Or the reserves eating any of the orange’s 🍊 at halftime 😂
Or the reggies getting in to a few pies and then getting a call up for 1sts.

Depends on the "level" that your kid plays.
If you have ambitions for him, and of course have $$$$$ . . . you will sooner or later get swept up in the "Youth League" system. It's a higher level of competition, generally better coached and better players competing in it. But full of politics and agendas.
And then on the other hand . . . it costs you maybe 3k per year, a lot of clubs have massive agendas as to who plays and who rides the pine. For example, your religion, your ethnic background, if you drive a top level Land Rover, if your Mrs has had the girls done, if the coach fancies himself with your Mrs or her new girls, and of course if there's any spots left in the team after all the sponsor's nephews have been picked.
This 3k payment inevitably is to pay the senior players of that club, though you will be told it's for the development of your little Messi.
Generally, after 5 odd years of 3k p/a, your kid will be either sick of sport, be too involved with school/girls/other distractions, or just wants to go back to Park soccer and play with his mates.
Had to laugh reading this. My son played in the SAP development program from age 9-12 then for various NPL teams until he was 17 and HSC and Covid came along ( as did the inevitable girls, partying, festivals and concerts etc etc). Cost us a small fortune for him to stay at that elite level and your descriptions are 100% correct. He has more fun now playing short sided comps with his mates. There is so much crap and corruption in the management of football in this country. It’s no wonder we can’t compete with the top nations in football- at least the girls have a decent go at it.

League is the far superior game however, soccer has a few things that League doesnt:

The barreir to entry for Rugby League is far higher. You could be a fast/skillful little kid and not get a look in as some goliath pacific islander is hogging the limelight. In soccer, the fast and skilful are the standouts. Additionally, the cost to enter soccer is very low and there is ample opportunity as it is played everywhere. This means any kid can have a go at it.

There is far more ingrained tribalism in soccer. Personally I think its because its such a boring game where bugger all happens, that even the scoring of a solitary goal is epic for the crowd. I also think that as nothing really happens in soccer, the crowd tend to interact with each other far more, creating a brotherhood that lends itself to this tribalism.

If you take these two factors out, and Rugby League buries soccer where it lays because as you pointed out, ther is far more spectacle and entertainment within it.
Yeah mate the numbers around the world support your theory. Have you ever been to a Premier League game. Your a league supporter and you enjoy it better, it ends there. Your got to be kidding to even try to compare the two sports and i own a boxing gym so theres no bias here. Football/soccer is on another planet when your comparing the numbers, but im sure the many many millions around the world are all of there heads and like usual your word is all that counts. Saying would a soccer player be able to tackle is embarrassing. Can Twal get around the field with ball at there feet at that speed. Different sports. Like comparing boxing to league. lot have tried and failed and vice versa. But im sure youl have league on top of boxing despite it being a flea when comparing numbers and dollars. Different fans like different sports not up to you to carry on like you know farken everything like usual.
