OFFICIAL Jarome Luai - #295

They actually should have won that first game against the Warriors …that was the most disappointing loss of the season in some ways…they were the better team… they were no hope this week… I’ll agree to disagree about the styles … although the first game is not still exactly fresh in my mind
It’s funny, I actually saw very similar outcomes of both games, in both games we were completely out muscled but we still managed to stay in the game despite showing any real spark in attack. I think I timed the first tackle where we put the warriors forwards on their back in that round 4 game and it was about the 20min mark.

I reckon I have the answer, it’s because we do not currently have the players with speed, power or ability to make it any better if we play expansive and use our edges more regularly.

It’s funny they can demonstrate the opposite early in the season…but apparently the same players aren’t capable now…. Let’s stick to punching up the middle and getting dominated

I just watched the hightlights.. gee they scored a beautiful try from inside their own half running it wide on tackle 4 ,,,managed 24 points too as opposed to 14 yesterday and led with 10 minutes to go as opposed to losing by 20…

You say “stay in the game “…I say they threw the game away and lost on a penalty goal with 5 mins to go

What do you put this down to and do we have any players that could help fix it ?
Terrell May is generally quite strong in the tackle, but very rarely hits hard and puts much fear into anyone.
I’d say the 3 Fainu brothers are really our only players other than Jeral Skelton who can hit hard enough to worry any of our opponents.
Does that mean we should potentially start both Fainu’s Sione and Samuela in the middle along with Terrell to try and assert a bit of authority early in games ?

I definitely am not suggesting we stick to one out running in the middle and getting belted, I’m purely saying there must be some reason why our expansive play has stopped happening,

It’s each of one way, half a dozen of another. You could say we played more expansive in the first half of the year. The one difference was having Lachie Galvin in the side, is it a coincidence that the side isn’t playing as add hoc as it did starting the season without him?
Another factor that is overlooked often when fans are hoping for an improved season is that the Premiership is won at the end of the year. The teams that are there when the whips are cracking are less concerned with winning early and more concerned with building a winning style that wins late. Our style in my opinion hasn’t changed from round 1 except for the fact we no longer have a 2nd fullback in our side (the roaming role that LG did so frequently). You can sit through the two Warriors games from this year to see that. In both games we were dominated in the ruck and played off the back foot and made the best of our rare opportunities when presented. This round though we made far more errors then we did in round 4. But we still play pretty much up and down for a kick and shift late and flat with little to no depth.
Here’s a photo I took from my TV when one of the Warriors tries were scored.
You can see how much shape they set and how many options they present to the line. Look at their runners and our numbers opposite. That’s Latu alone and To’a outside him.

Which further damns the decision To'a made to come in on that occasion.

The shame about this mess we have not really learned any lessons from Round 1, we have no kicking game, our attack has a stop start pattern there is no real consistency or urgency shown until we are behind. Our tackling at best non forceful our consistent line speed is not there; your key forward Api cannot play a full 80 minutes which is on the coaching staff, as your main option is now at Parra, your next real good option is at least a minimum 12mnths away, a decent prospect Hodges cannot get a decent consistent run in Koe cup. Our million dollar half is not a actual halfback but really a running 5/8 with limited passing vision, very minimum kicking tractability.

Unfortunately I doubt we are ever going to find that out…my perceptions are that there was a change after the Storm thrashing …so perhaps that result may have influenced something ?

Kicking is an issue NRL wide. The amount of kicks that go straight to a fullback or winger are ridiculous. I am surprised clubs don't invest more into this area.

I am hoping that the club signs a left edge forward or Saukuru can continue his growth since switching from centre to demand the spot, which would allow the Samuela move.

I am happy to play Samuela in either position for now, though expect him to end up at prop eventually.

We should have a long time ago and we need a tackling coach and a new defensive coach asap.

Sol Saukuru was needed on Sunday at least he runs with a purpose. Samuel needs to hit the gym hard in the off season along with Sione.

Samuela will still be the best edge at the club next year after KPP gets here … he won the clubs best player last year and is still only 22… I would persist with him

Still 21 isn't he? For the team's sake, I hope that you are wrong on who will be the best edge in 26, and whilst I am happy enough with Samuela, I just want someone else to force him out of that position to further improve the side.

He has got a bit of a second year syndrome …no one was complaining last season …did that talent just disappear…for good?

He is a 20yo solid unit that I want to see getting an occasional run to end the season, so that he knows how hard he needs to work in the off-season to prepare for the challenge of proving himself a starter next season.

Whether it be him or Samuela outside of Luai, the pairing needs to become more like the combination with Kikau that thrived at Penrith.

I agree @Bellend @mtd#2 Jarome & Latu need to be doing a lot of kicking practice in the off & pre season to develop in this area with a speciialist kicking coach. Jarome would have seen how much extras Nathan Cleary did with his kicking, he & Latu need to follow suit (and Api & Mason).

Laui just needs some more top-grade players to help.

You cannot expect him to be in the top 8 with some of these players we have.

Big 6 months coming up for Richo to add players where we struggle but keep the faith people as we have already had a better year this year with like 7 games to go.
