Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I was screaming for change? Citation needed. I was basically off here for 18 months I’m the lead up to Marshall taking over, so not sure where that comes from. Also, you’ll have to cite me where I ever endorsed appointing a guy, albeit a club legend, with zero experience. I’ll be keen to see what you find. But I digress. I have a question. I put this in the Benji thread the other day, but this seems like as good a time as any to ask again? What has he brought to the table? Unfortunately you aren’t allowed to say pride in the jersey or the fact players love him. That’s all window dressing. When it comes to the nitty gritty, what has brought to the club as a coach on the field? Where has this team improved, what areas? What tactical nous has he shown? Bravery with team selections? Anything? What justifiable reason do you have to be patient? Do you just feel obligated being a supporter?
Here we go. Are you ready?

Firstly, are you saying you were asking for no change at all before Benji? Sorry but your snide and sarcastic comments were spamming the forum during the period. You wanted change. Maybe not the change you wanted but you've never said anything positive about the club. We expect that.

Secomdly, what has he brought? At the most basic level he has brought the ability to recruit. More than I can say about our previous coaches.

If we could get our hands on a few good Norwegian’s that would be very handy.
Yeah, if we go Norwegians then Techno Viking is the way to go.

That bloke would rave his way to a premiership.

PS. If you don’t know who I am talking about search it in YouTube. Then do yourself a favour and read the comments. Do a piss first you may laugh hard enough for an awkward moment.

You won't catch me defending Benji's coaching prowess, but you're trying to corner your opponent here unfairly...

Something like 'the fact the players love him', whilst intangible in some ways, is ABSOLUTELY something he has brought to the table. In fact, most coaches who are sacked tend to hear the death knell of 'they've lost the dressing room' in the process of their last weeks with their clubs.

But, clearly, it's recruitment. Benji has been able to recruit, as head coach, better than any head coach in our history, I would argue.

On field? He's struggling.

But pretending that he hasn't been a major factor in finally ending our long run of being the club that none wants to sign at is ridiculous.

“Benji improved the ability to recruit”

Do you guys really think Luai came here because of Benji? Its the pay check and nothing else

And then Luai influenced May and Turuva to come, Luai would’ve came here with any other coach with that kind of money

I was off here for a full year. Maybe longer. I came back, the pre season leading into Benji’s first season, coming off two spoons. Copped it deluxe for being one of the only ones to say we would not improve, and guess what..Another spoon. Tbf, my expectations were a little higher this year, but according to you, that’s still the wrong way to be. So damned if I do, damned if I don’t

I prefaced by saying window dressing does not count. What has he brought on the field,
tacitly? I feel like if you knew, you’d have already given an example.

Your expectations were a little higher and you have received a little higher. Why complain?

Tactically, it's a new squad ripped apart at the seams mid season. 18 games and you're disappointed. When did you expect the change? 5 games? 10 games?

Benji has name value, no doubt about that. But that will only get him so far if he’s clueless when it comes to the 80 mins week in week out. And like another question I have regularly posed. What’s the point of attracting all these players if the coach can’t do anything with them? Also, the appeal will soon wear off for players to want to continue to come here and sign for him if we aren’t getting results. He needs more to his arsenal than his reputation as a player.

Why was it ripped apart? Cos we let 2 players go. 18 months early. Let’s go back to Parra, also a new squad, but they are starting to show signs of life. If you have a new squad, and it takes half a season to start cooking, that’s fine. But we aren’t even at that point. Not even at the point where we think “Oh man, next year is looking good”. There are no signs of life with this squad atm. It’s just wait and hope.

but that’s the complete opposite of the reason they themselves have said they joined the club, and doesn’t explain why we couldn’t recruit before benji.

Brother when we let Klemmer go you were carrying on that we didn't directly replace him. Letting players go in key positions makes a difference as well as the media scrutiny around it. He was our 6. He also destabilised the team by alledging his team and coach were bullying him. Sorry, but it changed the course of our season. TDS didn't make much difference for mine, but many will argue it did.

Your argument was he made origin. Makes 120m a game and 93% tackle efficiency.

I can show you backrowers with more missed tackles that are far better. Go have a look at Hudson Youngs missed tackles. He's in the top 30 in the NRL. Twal barely misses too...origin level you think?
Beau Fermor & KPP would give us differing strike on both edges and shore up our defence on both edges too, plus enable us to move Samuela to the middle. This argument is null-in-void if Benji would have no intention of shifting Samuela to the middle.

Please give examples. What indigenous programs are all the other clubs doing? You mentioned the Bulldogs. I don't think there's one indigenous player in their team. They are your standard. By your logic we should exclude all indigenous.
Pathways and junior recruitment with scouts on the ground at junior Koori Knockout Carnivals.
Heath & Wellbeing being at the forefront and proactive with all our emerging players, but is particularly required for young players who relocate to play with us including those of Indigenous descent.
I’ve seen recent reports stating we lack in these areas due to lack of funds, however I know we have a Health & Wellbeing Team and having scouts at Junior Rep Carnivals and Koori Knockout Carnivals do not cost a lot once the connections have been made.
I am aware it’s only been a recent change with Shannon Gallant and Bronson Harrison given promotions, so I’m assuming they will be across all these things to ensure we get our fair slice of the pie.

This is not a "program"

We have 1 scout to the Bulldogs 7. It's a resources thing, not an indigenous neglect thing.
