Charlie Murray while not being overly big, strong or fast, he’s hard working, a good solid defender who makes nearly all of his tackles and generally has no issue getting back to marker or in the defensive line,
In his limited game time against the Cowboys he also demonstrated he can play as a 1st receiver ball playing style of 13 very comfortable and it actually created more time and soace for Luai and our left edge to function effectively.
In addition to this he can play 9 and his service from dummy half looks decent.
I’m not saying he is anything special, but he looks capable of playing roles that are required off the bench and do them effectively.
For someone outside of our top 30 I think he’s doing well, he will get an opportunity to do a full pre season with us in the lead up to 2026 and has scope to improve quite a bit because of it.
You would like to think Heath Mason being named at 14 could spend some time at 9 giving Api a rest and he offers great utility value to cover for plenty of other positions if required.
He is still only 20 years old, he will also not be considered as part of our best 17 for 2026 at the moment, but he’s known as an extremely hard worker who I’m certain will relish the challenge of improving himself to at least put himself in contention for our top 17 and I think he will relish the opportunity to impress in likely playing positions such as 9 that he has not played previously.
Sukkar is still quite young at age 21, he will have benefited from his NRL experience this seaon and while he has not set the world on fire, he has good size and mobility for a young lad and I am seeing stronger ball carries and steady all round improvement from him. Like the other two he probably will not be considered part of our initial top 17 for 2026, but he now has a good taste of NRL, so it’s up to him to have a strong off season and improve enough to at least put himself in contention.
Royce Hunt is Royce Hunt, he will give us a strong 20mins and it’s up our other 2 bench middles to provide more minutes.
I can’t see us beating the Raiders this weekend, but I can’t be blaming our bench, they are not asking to each play very minimal game time.
The fact most aren't seeing this is embarrassing. I agree with all of what you have said.
Murray carried the ball strong for his size the past 2 weeks and doesn't get driven back. He has shown a nice slight of hand with the ball creating some space for others, and makes his tackles. I seriously question those putting shit on him.
Most folks just ball-watch attacking players - post-contact metres, tackle and line break, peach of a pass, etc.
They're not watching the one-percenters which this bloke is the best at in the team, IMO. Your Josh King at Melbourne type of player. As an example, you watch the Braiden Burns try for NQ and he's the middle recognising Wests have no numbers on the short side and he's trying hard to be a body there along with Latu and Bula. That whole try came about because Tiny got beaten on his outside by Vaelia so he had to make a legs tackle and Vaelia got a qptb. Luai ended up as a marker and middles were compressed on that left side. Latu had to attempt a tackle on McLean in the middle of the ground who managed an offload, and then Clifford put Sukkar and Naden under pressure and a qptb. Basically ended up being a 4 v 2 against Skelton and Murray on the short side with a massive scramble from Latu ended up concussed on the play.
No criticism of Tiny getting beaten because he does wonderful things everyone sees. Tiny was also pulled in by Dearden for the Valemei try on Wests left in the second half. He was wrong-footed, but when Naden does it, he's the c*ntiest c*nt on the planet. Vaelia got the space he needed, pulled in Turuva and Valemei scored the try.
And
@Vicious, you're 100% correct about Murray being a good link man as #13. He's the only genuine #13 in the whole squad, and has good service from dummy half when Koroisau is off for his 5 mins. Apparently he's been playing busted all season too, so its a credit to him to have made his NRL debut, and continue to be selected, albeit predominantly because the middle depth is in fact fairly bad. A few of us who have watched the lower grades all year have said it, and now that middles depth is being severely tested without Seyfarth and Bird.
Sukkar is same as Murray, defensively you can see he is thinking about the next play and he makes his tackles too. Just doesn't have the oomph in his carries. Sukkar is lacking power, Murray is lacking size and likely physically hampered.
Yes, there are better players with a bit more impact in their carries, but they didn't lose the game on the weekend. The same guys that nearly won the game for Wests were the ones who practically lost it!
