Wests Tigers are moving to extend young guns Heamasi Makasini and Samuela Fainu to mega deals in a $6 million-plus retention drive to make the embattled club a premiership force.
This masthead can reveal Tigers bosses are ready to open talks on twin five-year deals for Makasini and Fainu as the dynamic duo prepare for their season-opener against the Cowboys at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday.
The 18-year-old Makasini is one of the hottest backline properties in the code, while the 22-year-old Fainu, who plays his 50th game in the Tigers’ Round 2 clash, is rated a future NSW Origin forward.
Marshall made his intentions clear for Makasini on Thursday, revealing the club needs to do whatever it takes to keep him happy and locked in at Concord for the future.
“Heamasi is really important to us we will prioritise whatever we need to do to make sure he stays here,” Marshall said.
When it comes to the fight from rugby union, Marshall holds no concerns about the opposing code, with the teenager under contract with the club for the next two seasons.
Even highlighting that Makasini hasn’t mentioned rugby off his own back.
“Rugby is not a concern for me,” Marshall said.
“He’s still got two more years here under contract that we need to get the best out of.
“He hasn’t brought it up.”
Makasini and Fainu are off-contract at the end of next season, making them free agents from this November, opening the door for poaching threats from new franchises Perth and PNG.
But the Tigers insist the future superstars are going nowhere.

It is understood Tigers hierarchy have indicated they want to kick-off negotiations, with the joint-venture keen to lock in Makasini and Fainu until at least 2032.
Former Tigers boss Shane Richardson has watched the development of Makasini and Fainu closely and says the promising pair can one day help the club win its first premiership since 2005.
“They are as good as it gets,” said Richardson, who departed as Tigers CEO in December.
“Samuela is a true superstar.
“I think he’s worth at least $750,000 a season. He’s a line-breaking back-rower who can play 80 minutes without a problem and he’s an excellent defender. There’s no downside to him, he ticks all the boxes.
“As for Makasini, he’s always been a freak. He’s a great kid with a great attitude and he’s only going to get better.
“Those kids are the future of the club.”

The Tigers last month secured Fainu’s brother Sione to a three-year extension and that could aid their retention push for Samuela, who is relishing playing alongside his siblings, including a third brother, playmaker Latu.
Makasini made his NRL debut in the final round of the 2025 season against the Titans and caught the eye in a recent pre-season trial with a sizzling solo try against the Panthers.
Five-year extensions for the pair would be worth north of $3 million individually, but Tigers bosses believe they will get bang for their buck, with coach Benji Marshall regarding Makasini and Fainu as franchise players.
The pair could potentially earn more on the open market, but Richardson is confident Makasini and Fainu will stay loyal to the Tigers.

“I don’t believe they want to go anywhere else,” he said.
“The Fainu boys love playing together and they will want to stay together as brothers at the Tigers.
“These kids are very close to Benji, they have a lot of respect for him, I really believe these guys can bring some success to the Wests Tigers.”
Makasini will replace Starford Toa in the centres this week against the Cowboys, but Marshall is confident he can do the job despite the positional change from the wing.
The former Newington college student filled in for Taylan May while he was injured during pre-season.
