OFFICIAL SG Ball Cup

Balmain yet again threw away a win. For a no frills team they know how to dominate but still miraculously find absurd ways to lose. Very poor discipline and the winger Lawrence must have had 6 knock ons at least. Conceding 1 second before half time when we were well on top was a real sucker punch. The spine was crap which made it hard. Makinder at hooker was shocking. The ranga centre Wood was good in attack and defence. Some good runs from our forwards and great impact from the bench.

A shame they don't have 1-2 classy players I finish opportunities, otherwise they'd be a top 4 side.

The squad will be looking to bounce back, none more so than lock-forward and Captain, Blake Van Drie who crossed for two tries in last round’s contest.

Only just got around to watching the Wests match and holy crap what an embarrassing side they are. Just a very poor side, zero coaching, zero leadership. Very little on field talent.

HBG sounds be ashamed of what they've done to their own juniors.
@balmain boy we have already been over this, this team has lost 8 key players to rival clubs and Makasini promoted to NRL.
Take 9 of the best players out of any other team in this SG Ball competition and see how they go ?
The departure of the Large brothers was a Richo decision that’s not even a secret.
Others such as Maddox Fui, Thomas Goodfield, Tyson Walker and Stirling Faumui were not prioritised by our Wests Tigers recruitment & retention team which is mainly Shannon Gallant.
Add Alex Isdale and Ali Karnib now with Balmain and that is more than half of their team who have departed within 2 years.
This being the case it is a good effort to even have a somewhat competitive team.

Shannon who now looks after our senior recruitment. Great.

All in all the Wests Magpies in both SG Ball & Harold Matts have under-performed. Yes what you say is true V but we've still got some very highly rated youngsters in these teams.

We have 3 NRL squad members in SG Ball in CTM, Godinet & Havea Jr, a blockbusting centre in Glassie, an elusive fullback in Paea, a few city/country rep players in Ta'ai, Tavui & Tovia and prior to the season starting a couple of very promising bottom-age halves in Lakeman & Lele.

Unfortunately imo I could only probably name Siotame Havea Jr and Peter Ta'ai as two who have progressed in performance from last year, albeit Havea Jr out of position at hooker.

For whatever reason CTM & Godinet have just gone through the motions (showed occasional moments of their ability but have not dominated a game), Lele apart from last week has been incredibly disappointing, Lakeman has tried but lacks something, Glassie has it but isn't often given good ball and can be found out in defence at times, Paea has x-factor but doesn't get involved enough and our middles haven't stood out.

Aside from that, the team makes too many mistakes and gives away too many penalties. It has happened all too often this season. Is it a personnel thing? Is it a coaching thing? Is it a lack of a dominant spine? I don't know but something has to change after this season especially with some very good U18 LDC players & likes of Iszak Isdale, Finau brothers, Sebastian Taylor & James Lanyon coming through.

It is a coaching thing pure and simple we have taken another step back this year.

m not sure if it’s to do with the lesser quality opposition providing more time and space to play, but the Andrew Johns Cup and Laurie Daley Cup teams have played very good style of football over the past few games that I’ve been watching. They look to have some very promising players amongst them, so you would hope for much improved Harold Matthews and SG Ball results in 2027 with a fair few of these players filtering through.
It will be very interesting to see how Taupau-Moors and Godinet play for our Jersey Flegg team with a different coach and different team mates ? We know they are well up to this level or higher when they put their mind to it.

It’s hard to work out why top class players such as Taupau-Moors and Godinet need coaching motivation to get the best out of them ?
They both have the physical attributes to dominate, it just comes down to wanting to be heavily involved, playing with high energy and running the ball at speed, instead of half pace.

Maybe they should move Godinet to the centres to try & get him involved

Unfortunately there’s just not enough money poured into this club to compete in all our grades

They set up dumb play's and run dumb lines someone in charge needs to take responsibility for the effort we are seeing so far this year. Players yes need to put their hands up, but it is not all on them.
