LIVE GAME Round 5 versus Eels

Live Game Discussion
Wests Tigers captain Api Koroisau was also charged over a hip drop tackle on fellow Fiji international Kitione Kautoga and faces a $3000 fine as it is his third and subsequent dangerous contact charge

The bulletin was confusing as it lists above then mentions 2 match ban if he contests it and loses.

Strange can go from 3k fine to 2 weeks.

Lucky for us though

Tigers were dominant outside of the left edge and 10 minutes with a player in the sin bin. Some serious credit to the forwards Twal, May. Api. KPP, Sam Fainu. Pole. Royce, Sione Fainu. This is the best overall pack we have fielded in years. Credit where it’s due they are strong across the park.
You should see the run metres and post contact metres, that was the difference in the game in my opinion.

All but 3 of our guys had better post contact metres figures than their opposite number.

A lot of our boys got over 100 metres in total runs with Hunt getting 71m in his short spell & Laulilii grabbing a huge 219pcm.

Made no comments during the game tonight as I wanted to focus more closely. So now after time to digest it all, my thoughts are that resilience, fitness and a bit of luck were the key factors in our win.
Eels also had their fair share of luck with a few rulings and fortunate outcomes.
Similar to the Souths game we dominated large sections of this game but failed to score points when we really should have. This allowed the Eels to almost snatch a win.
Execution in A is fairly average and I believe will improve by mid season. Our ball movement oftens looks clunky and slow currently, with poor passing being the main cause. The ball is rarely out in front allowing the receiver to run onto it with pace. Our ptb speed is also often slow. Twal is the only starting middle running hard enough however our bench middles are making a big difference. Our edges are playing consistently well and this makes a massive improvement to our squad.
In D it’s obvious we have a real problem with our left side. Maka and LL are so out of their depth. Teams will start targeting them every week if we don’t make changes.
Finally, as much as he is a quality and valuable inclusion I say this every week, but AD is no halfback!
How many times did AD just have to pass and we score. He is a centre and he needs to get the ball 2 passes wide. He had turuva unmarked and goes for the hero play every time

We were sitting high up and it was more than 5 times he refused to pass when we had numbers - even on Bula’s try he dummied before finally seeing the numbers out wide and passing.

Sameeee, drove me crazy . Even Bula won’t pass when it’s a certain try . Our forward pack deserves better than what they are getting from the backs in attack . They are the reason we are winning games .

Even my son asked why we can’t create overlaps for our wingers like other teams.

We really struggle inside the opposition 20

Probably grade 2, cops a week. Someone said it was his 2nd hip drop charge so maybe a 2nd week with loading.
So how come Galvin two hipdrop tackles no suspensions, and about 4 other players let off, But, again the Westtiger curse is at work, our winger gets 10 in the bin, and 1 week suspension, and Api faces possible 2 weeks suspension,

THE JOKE CONTINUES.

I was at the game and it was a great atmosphere. Gutsy and gritty win, but probably best not to get lost in the spectacle that was that game.

No matter which way you look at it, we let in 5-tries and the only reason we weren't punished for it was because Parramatta can't covert. We cannot be playing catch-up against the better teams this season as we will be punished much more harshly for it given our attack is quite rocks-and-diamonds at times.

I thought the sin bin was a really rough call. Ref caved into the noise from the members section and the little bit of WWE from a few players that came in to give their 2-cents. From my seats at the game Moses had probably approached the ref, and touched him at least half-dozen times up until that point.

I can't deny the sin bin played a role in us leaking points. Though, the top teams seem to be a lot more adaptable when down a player. We got the win today but feel like a better team that wasn't as hurt would have punished us a lot more for that lack of adaptability. It wasn't even a matter of outplaying on the edge, it was simply just going there that caused us to leak those points.

Personally, I thought May was a bit of a momentum killer in our attack compared to our other front rowers. Great post-contact meters from him but I consider his ball-playing ability a step under what Twal, and Samuela have been producing lately. He also had a considerably slower PTB overall. Defensively he he was pretty great today.

Not sure how much long Turuva can play at centre. I am not a big fan of him at centre. He holds the ball way too long and lacks a lot of athleticism and depth compared to other centres in game today. I think once Taylan is back we will be a completely different team.
