Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

I thought I read so.ewhere he wanted to come off contract same tine as terrell may
And Tyrone - the brother in the UK.
All 3 contracts expire at the same time
I think we are talking past each other.

I know "what it's about", but you don't address how the Tigers compete with a tax-free offer? Much like we could not compete when it came to Jarome.

You think this is the last player that will leave for the cash? People can pontificate all they like but if an offer comes from PNG, the player will leave no matter what we out in front of them.
i think Jarome was sold on the glory of spearheading his own club, in a whole country…
I think he was perfectly chosen by Chammas for this reason.

I’ve heard the math on it, mostly spoken by ex footballers…
‘It’s like turning a 700k player into a 1.2mill player’? I don’t see it working like that. they’re adding the tax (they’re not paying) twice it seems to me.

If a player is a 700k player, he’s clearing maybe 400k (in rough, round numbers) savy investing / accounting would negate that, quite a bit if they’re doing it right.
The reality is it would be turning a guy that’s on 500 ish back into a 700k player.

I also believe elite sportsmen don’t pay the std PAYG tax of the common man, not considered in the above…

For that he has to go live caged Up with the fellas he works with in a borderline 3rd world country…
Don’t get me wrong, there’ll be plenty dumb enough to think they’re all in for it - but the shine will wear off very quickly..

The Luais and maybe a couple other high profile names will be treated like Royalty from the higher ups
- most of the others will just be the outliers…

Off-field signing/appointment in DT:

WESTS TIGERS PROMOTE PREMIERSHIP WINNER

Wests Tigers premiership winner Pat Richards has been promoted to become the club’s senior NRL manager – which is essentially the acting head of football.

Richards has stepped up into the role given former head of football Shaun Mielekamp is now chief executive. While he has done a good job since taking over from Shane Richardson, Mielekamp has not yet been announced as permanent boss.

Richards coached the Western Suburbs Harold Matthews side this year having previously been involved in mentoring outside backs in the club’s pathways programs.
Sounds like a positive move and hopefully we can get Shaun announced as our permanent CEO very soon.
I did think Tim Grant would have been good as our NRL manager, but maybe Pat Richard’s has better business acumen qualities?

Don''t understand all the negativity around Pat's appointment. Plenty of old dinosaurs have done this job before and failed miserably due to being out of touch with the game and its intricacies. I would imagine Pat knows the club like the back of his hand and will provide some excellent ideas and do this job well, should we get someone experienced like Pascoe, Mayer, Burgess etc. Jesus wept give the guy a chance before you have your stereotypical cry baby fits.

I’m glad SM called Terrell’s manager an hour after luai conference this morning lol.

Sean : “Hey we’d really like to talk
About that extension Terrell’s been asking for since December last year”

Agent : “add $250k on top, plus 4 yr deal, plus player options every year, thanks… byeeee… oh sorry you there? And same for my brother”
My thoughts exactly. Why on earth did it take Luai leaving for them to initiate talks again? Reeks of panic

No one here would really know his expertise for this role that he seems to have limited prior experience..

most of the guys they have there in important roles are all ex players from around that 2005 era … there have long been “boys club “ accusations around the club ..

It’s an important time to be “giving the guy a chance “ … we need him to get this right ..otherwise we could be back to square one two years down the track

You are not addressing his point.
If we have a $700K resource that we want to keep and he attracts interest from PNG, he is gone unless we offer an upgrade close to double his worth.
That’s totally neglecting the many non-monetary reasons a player might stay. We apparently have a group who loves their team and coach.

Richo was great because he had a vision and he could sell it.

I’m not discounting it makes it more difficult, merely pointing out that you still need to have priorities, and probably pay over their market to keep them.

Our main board ( HBG ) need to approve all signings as we don’t have a football board that know off whole are allowed to do that job , power was moved in December , May Snr contract stall was just poor work , Bulla no signing is a joke with 2 contracts on offer , this HBG group need to secure our football board let them get a deal done and just sign off on it , if Benji and Richard’s & Shaun have done a deal then run with it , who the hell on the HBG board would be better suited to make the call over those guys , the board still has not secured a CEO full time as Shaun is a temp / fill in , we are up top of the comp , players look happy , coach seems to be producing the goods so why stuff around , I feel they just hate to give someone a job where they make a call not them

Those non-monetary reasons didn't stop Luai. I'd suspect most will be more concerned with maximising their earning power.

That’s what I was thinking. You’d think you’d have to be a foreign resident in PNG to avoid paying tax.
I had to worry about all that when I moved to HK and Singapore. If it's the normal tax domiciliary rules, you have to sever ties with Australia and show you've moved permanently. So that can be things like selling your house, moving all your stuff (i.e. not having things in storage), no schooling etc. You must demonstrate that you have no intent to live back in australia in the future.

They have the 90-day rule, but that is all overwritten by this "Intent to reside" domicile test.

The difference in this situation is that it's sanctioned by the government. So it may be a completely different set of rules.

Yes because the CEO might do things like change the jersey and decide where they play their home games …tells me they want to micro manage ..so this will extend to what players are being retained and how much they are paid …

Even if and when Shaun gets the nod as the GM…I doubt he will have anything like the latitude Richo had …

I don’t know really what is going to change about this in the meantime unfortunately … so we might have to get used to it … Benji is gunna have a real important role beyond coaching , because I suspect he is the only one that can push them to get things done ..

Should’ve been negotiated earlier when Terrell wanted it done.

We thought we had the cards, and that we had time.

The administration didn’t think if all the possibilities which might eventuate and now they’ve been caught in a bad position.

Whereas they could’ve given Terrell $800/900k to stay before. Now they’ll have to give him more.

That’s what happens when you have guys who have no experience as CEO of a rugby league team. And not just that most ceos probably in the NRL. Say what you want about Richo but he got sh*t done.

A year ago you would jump down my throat at the first sign of negativity. Now you are just as jaded. See what supporting this club does?
Because at least Richo knew what he was doing. Now he have an (interim) ceo still learning the job, no notable recruitment team our nrl head coach does it all and a GM of footy who was just coaching our Matt’s team.
