Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

If Chammas, a journo with no football experience, only opinions, can take on the Head of Football at the Chiefs, I’m sure that Patty will do a far better job with his wealth of knowledge.
Maybe. Pat doesn't have the luxury of offering a 5 star resort to reside in or a couple of years of 500k + tax free.

I’m glad SM called Terrell’s manager an hour after luai conference this morning lol.

Sean : “Hey we’d really like to talk
About that extension Terrell’s been asking for since December last year”

Agent : “add $250k on top, plus 4 yr deal, plus player options every year, thanks… byeeee… oh sorry you there? And same for my brother”
Or maybe there had already been chat behind the scenes that he is a priority but to make a credible offer they first need to free up space.

I had to worry about all that when I moved to HK and Singapore. If it's the normal tax domiciliary rules, you have to sever ties with Australia and show you've moved permanently. So that can be things like selling your house, moving all your stuff (i.e. not having things in storage), no schooling etc. You must demonstrate that you have no intent to live back in australia in the future.

They have the 90-day rule, but that is all overwritten by this "Intent to reside" domicile test.

The difference in this situation is that it's sanctioned by the government. So it may be a completely different set of rules.
Will get interesting when one of those Dubai tax haven Aussies decides to go to court citing the agreement that the Govt made with players and staff at the chiefs.

I’d say most players would stay in Oz for a bit less. If you’re going to match PNG on dollars it won’t add up. The good GM’s will sell a vision, pay well for the right blokes and have some good TPA’s at the ready. Then you need to develop young players well. PNG won’t be attractive to a lot of guys, and they only need a handful of really top line players.
The problem is PNG are also selling a vision and it looks pretty compelling!

Plus let's be honest, they'll be in Australia for half the season. I am going to go out on a limb and bet they will stay in Aus for 2 or 3 weeks at a time if they have back to back games in Oz to save on the travel. The Warriors already do this when they have consecutive games.

This compound nonsense is going to be a minor inconvenience, but more likely a refreshing luxury. They'll paint the town red while in Sydney/Brisbane/Perth and chill in PNG.

There will be clubs that will lose hard from this. Our only hope is that it's not us.

So what? A vast majority of this forum and Tigers supporters gave Benji no chance, but he’s constantly learning, improving, and growing into the head coach role.

Not every appointment will work out, but I’d rather an old boy who understands our club than just another shonky administrator who lacks real Tigers insight.

Kieran Foran is a case in point. Young and inexperienced, but he understands the Manly culture and he's getting results.
Shane Richardson knew nothing about Benji and WT’s culture and look what he helped us build. there were plenty of robust discussions and differences between those two along the way that helped create what we’re looking at currently.

Pat is going to be Benji’s yes man and I don’t like that.

Pat Richards doesn't strike me as a yes man..

I can’t see Pat being a yes man. In a lot of ways, both he and Benji are cut from the same cloth - highly driven and motivated to succeed.

One thing that's interesting for PNG, is that it's far more favourable for the marque guys.

But for the blokes earning the minimum $120k, it's only another $28k, excluding potential deductions. Hardly double like the commentators have been saying.

Given the guys in PNG may need private health care, flights back, etc., then that additional coin could get quickly eroded.

PNG may struggle trying to work out the top 30 at the bottom end. They'll need to focus on the marque guys first as a lure for them.

"Likely" being the operative word. Things can change. E.g. a crack down on gambling advertising impacting revenue.

Fair enough if there are ratchets for increases to the salary cap but it shouldnt just be assumed the cap would increase 20%. Increases have generally been pretty gradual
It's different for 2028 because the new tv deal will come into effect, and this TV deal will be the biggest jump we've seen in a tv deal. For example, the AFL signed a 4.5bil, 7 year deal last year. The NRLs current deal signed in 2022 is only 1.7bil.

NRL gets more views than AFL and in 2028 the NRL will finally have the same amount of teams and games per week as the AFL (which is why the NRL rushed bringing in Perth and PNG). They also may split the deal up and package origin separately from NRL games.

One thing I was thinking is the Bears desperately need a marquee player for next year...theyre getting left behind badly.....Im not sure whos off contract in the regard, that calibre of player but youd think theyd almost be able to name their own price.

I dunno...when I think Bears I think - average, North Sydney, easy beats, everyones 2nd team as they were no threat to anyone

It's not borderline 3rd world- it's worse than that.
I think the biggest safety concern is going to be for away players and the refs. What happens when the refs make a controversial decision and PNG lose the game... You see it with soccer games in areas of South America and Africa where large sections of fans storm the field assaulting players and referees.

I don't think it will happen, but its definitely in the realms of possibility given the violent nature of behaviour over there. Not just at the game but travelling to and from the games, at the hotels etc. Its going to be an extremely hostile environment that no amount of security can really control.

No different to the Dolphins their first year. They didn’t sign any stars either. With the Bears, there’s even less incentive as you have to move to the other side of the country, and still have to pay taxes like the rest of us plebs.

At the first sign of what happened there in 2024 and they will all come back - compound or no compound.
