There's a funny thing about luck there's only so much to go around, while one person's having a blinder someone else is having a shocker.

He waited a lifetime to see Scotland at a World Cup.![]()
Sadly, he never made it to kickoff.
Donny Strathie, a 76-year-old football fan from Grangemouth, had spent decades supporting Scotland through highs, lows, heartbreaks, and near misses.
Like countless members of the famous Tartan Army, he carried one dream with him for years:
To watch Scotland play at a FIFA World Cup.![]()
In 2026, that dream was finally within reach.
After generations of waiting, Scotland had returned to football's biggest stage, and Donny traveled to the United States to be part of the historic occasion.
He had his ticket.
He had made the journey.
And he was only days away from watching his beloved national team play.
Then tragedy struck.![]()
While staying in Massachusetts before the match, Donny suddenly collapsed and passed away.
News spread quickly among Scotland supporters.
Many knew him personally.
Others knew him simply as one of the familiar faces who had followed Scotland for years.
To fellow fans, he wasn't just another supporter.
He was family.
As tributes poured in, friends described him as a passionate football fan, a loyal companion, and a larger-than-life character who loved his country and loved the game.![]()
When Scotland finally took the field against Morocco, the Tartan Army made sure Donny was there in spirit.
In the 76th minute of the match — chosen because Donny was 76 years old — thousands of Scottish supporters rose to their feet.
They applauded for an entire minute.![]()
The sound echoed around the stadium.
A tribute not to a player.
Not to a coach.
But to a fan.
One of their own.
Then something beautiful happened.
Supporters from Morocco joined in.![]()
For a brief moment, rival fans stood together, united by respect and humanity rather than competition.
The applause spread across sections of the stadium.
Different flags.
Different nations.
One shared gesture.
Donny never got the chance to watch Scotland play at the World Cup the way he had imagined.![]()
But his story became part of the tournament anyway.
And perhaps that's fitting.
Because football is about more than goals and trophies.
It's about the people who follow their teams through every disappointment and every dream.
The supporters who travel thousands of miles.
The fans who never stop believing.
The people who make the sport what it is.
Donny Strathie may not have seen kickoff.![]()
But on that day, an entire stadium made sure he would never be forgotten.
And sometimes, that's the kind of victory that matters most.

That is the type of supporter we all should aim to be like.
