Samuela Fainu #280

The 1.2 million figure might be inflated by the journos, but you would think there is at least truth that he is asking more than we are prepared to pay, otherwise it would have already been sorted.
Extending Samuela’s contract should have been done 18 months ago, but that’s another story.
It blows your mind to think we are a struggling team at best, yet it’s possible we will have 3 of our current team earning 1 million dollars per season or more.
If Benji is fair dinkum, he should be pointing out that any team with 3 genuine million dollar plus players should be sitting comfortably in the top 8 on the back of regular too class games from those 3 players.
Those 3 players haven’t even been in the best 3 players in our struggling team this season.
Tell them all to go and let us sign some genuine million dollar plus players.

Doesn't help Samuela is liking posts on instagram about PNG's signings
The intent right now might be to stay, but if he is free to negotiate come 1 November (waiting for tartaks ban to be lifted), then it opens the door for PNG, chammas, luai and co... and he has 45 days to ponder it.

I reckon he will go.

He’s right where Teddy was in 2016. An obvious superstar with a lot of upside. A definite rep player of the future.

Strong clubs just get these deals done.

Does anyone expect loyalty from Samuela? Samuela and his brothers came here from Manly for more money. He will go where the money is.

He's not worth 1.2 million a year that's for sure. I'd be giving him 700k at most.

Sione was already playing for us. Latu was given permission to look elsewhere due to salary cap issues, Manly signed him at 16 on a million dollar contract. They came to us as a package deal, reports at the time said they nearly signed with Dolphins but ended up with us. I don't think it's fair to say Samuela came to WT simply for more money. NRL is a short career, not sure why players leaving any club for more money is an issue? Particularly clubs like ours, we aren't successful like Panthers, Chooks Storm etc so it's not like a player is giving up the chance to play finals with us & would stay for less money to achieve that. That's why we have consistently paid overs for players, we aren't an attractive club to further a career. I hope he stays but if he's offered more or can achieve more elsewhere, who could blame him for leaving?

Its not just Samuela it's happening at all clubs with players who are are attracting interest. Managers will be advising them to wait till November because PNG has changed the state of the market and it will be a test to see how far clubs are prepared to go. Fans will never think they are worth what they are being paid - and in WTs case - to retain or attract we are in a poor position to dictate terms compared to other clubs.

Was very predictable. lower placed clubs will pay even more for less. There’s just not enough good players to go around for 18-20 teams.

My concern with going all in for Samuela (by sounds we are) what happens when he wants out. We do this over & over & get burnt every time. Gave the keys to the castle to the “big 4” the 3 good ones left, gave Ivan the keys to the castle & he left, gave the keys to Jarome & he is going. The ramifications that has come with those departures contributed in a big way to our lack of success. I love Sammy & all the Fainu boys but geez if he was to go after we throw everything at him & build our cap around him we could be in all sorts of trouble. In saying that we need to keep the brothers here

Lock it in Eddie- he’s a Bohemoth we need to lead us forward!

There is no a single moment that I would take Samuela on rep money.

The only case to be argued is saying we can’t lose him because we lose the others.

The opposite applies. There is an extra cost to keep Sam because we have to pay others more.

Latu hasn’t shown anything to warrant more than 350-400k and even that is paying for potential vs what he has shown. Harsh, but we have enough 5/8s. You watch, Latu’s next contract will be 600k

Sione has gone backwards this year, yes even factoring in the disruption.

I would love to keep Sam. He is one of my favourite players and seems like a nice (sometimes hot headed) guy.

We need tough long term decisions for the next three years to get us back to an 8-12 position roster. From there we need another three years of smart decisions to take our roster to 4-8 position roster.

That entire paragraph is trumped by the need for a genuine halfback. We won’t be able to afford that overpaying. As a package, the three Fainu’s are in sum below the strength of three average regular NRL players.

We need to steadily upgrade with players who ARE better… not who our crystal ball gambles MAY one day be better.

I

Sione is a bench guy and should be a middle player only …he plays well in that position …not starting on the edge …that is where he has “gone backwards “ as he keeps being selected there …

Who are the halves you want to play next year ahead of Latu? The problem is that he has been here three years and we still don’t really know how he plays as a half ..you can’t show anything if you are not given the opportunity…I agree the club out of compete necessity will pay him more than what he has shown to date

Generally agree, though our crystal balls are too foggy to evaluate the three brothers either collectively or individually, based on how, where, and the amount they have been played.

Sadly, at most we will only get to evaluate Latu in our last 3 matches, and our current halves consist of one that is leaving and the other who isn't one, and recently refused to play elsewhere.

I wouldn't blame any of them for leaving.

To me it’s not about losing the others, it’s about not losing him and replacing him with someone as good as him…even if he’s not rep level.
