Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

We always have about 4-5 players that are light years from first grade and are in our top 30. No good clubs would do this. We continue to do it and expect different results.
It's why we dont have any depth when we need it. We waste our precious top 30 spots on players who are miles away from the cover we need.

I think the writing is on the wall with Latu and to a lesser extent Samuela. They are just too injury prone for NRL. Who knows their ceiling, but we can't pay marquee money on players that are watching from the grandstand half the time. Between Latu being injured every 5 minutes and then suspended because he can't tackle properly, to me he just looks like a failed experiment.

Yeah but 1/15 is ALSO infinitely better than 0/15. My point is: it's rather slim pickings, which is to be expected, and although I would welcome a Brad Arthur appointment, I would compel myself to have very low expectations. BA is not a proven winner, he's a decent coach who can sometimes get results under certain circumstances. Tigers have been proven to rarely provide the circumstances for a middle-range coach to succeed.

By comparison Madge Maguire reached the finals 5/12 times in his career, 3 NRL clubs and 2 premierships, so by any measurement Madge has the superior output of the two. But you'd never invite Madge back.

I don't disagree with any of that.

And that would be a huge mistake, and one that we can ill afford. Everyone in the top 30 must be able to contribute in first grade. If we were to take a punt on a youngster whose path is blocked at another club, that's one thing. But to promote someone who's years away and we know that, is insulting to everyone involved with the club
A mistake ? Probably .

They make mistakes often …

Are you aware Saukuru was part of the Top 30 since at least 2023 from memory … made his debut last week …

On radio this morning, apparently Young and Martin are both going to 1 Nov looking to achieve a $1m pa asking contract. That figure needs to be weighed up against the prospective increase in the salary cap and also the entry of the Chiefs into the competition and to a lesser extent Perth. Martin also turns 30 in March next year.

I should add my thoughts - Martin is a tough forward and plays the game hard. He is not overly big for a forward so his impressive career has imo taken its toll on his body. So if it is tough you want, Martin is your man. Young imo is a more skillful player and besides being hard without the tough man label, he brings a football brain to your team. I'd make a big offer to Young.

I’d wager one of the two will end up in PNG
