At least seven people have been injured, NSW Ambulance said. Their condition was unclear.
The incident occurred on the Newcastle Link Road roundabout at Transfield Avenue just after 9.30am.
Police and multiple ambulances and rescue helicopters have been sent to the area.
It comes as thousands of the Newcastle Knights faithful lined the streets ready to farewell the team bus, which was due to depart the Centre of Excellence at 9.30am on its way to Sydney for tomorrow's grand final.
Newcastle Link Road is closed westbound from Lake Road. It is the route the Knights bus was to take as it departs the city.
All traffic is being diverted onto Lake Road towards Glendale.

My son is up there and thankfully ok. He said it felt like all of Newcastle was there, it’s absolute bedlam. The choppers are landing on the park.
Such a horrible thing to happen, thoughts are with the injured people & their families.

You picked it.
Absolute grub. Anyone who thinks doing a burnout with people around is ok is better off locked up and away from society. Just a nob who puts people in danger to be a hero.
I dont care for the old "oh hes a 20 year old who made a mistake", please, burnouts are done by grubs.
So many parents dont raise their kids with any respect for other people.
Hopefully everyone pulls through and those seriously injured recover

There are unconfirmed reports that a young girl was trapped under the car had a cardiac arrest and had to be revived at the scene. I really hope they are wrong.
