Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Look everyone think defence is a 5 minute fix or even an off season fix
I'm gunna use the 2019 Panthers as an example
To get to the where they got to in 2020 and beyond it took 2 off seasons and a full season to get to that level
They finished 10th in 2019 , below us and had a -61 for and against
They had to change everything throughout the club at all levels of football development
But look at the time involved , and I know our pain is stretched over 15 years and another year of pain is the last thing any of us want
But that's what it is going to take to get to the top
And it all comes off their defence , yes I know it helps having Cleary as a player, but his defence is arguably the best of any half in the comp
They back their defence to get them into winning positions
If it's good enough for them , then that's the level we need to aim
And I'm not saying our attack doesn't need work it needs work , but if you concentrate on attack you never fix the crux of the problem and just have to chase more and more points every week
You have to fix your defence first
A good solid consistent defence,.play the long game and frustrate the opposition ala Penrith recently and.Melb past....wait for errors and force them away from what they want to do
The wrestle is a big part of it.

I think the game has changed significantly in recent seasons and Melbourne showed that if you can't attack your defensive structures no matter how good will only hold up so long. Their ability to attack was weakened considerably this season due to injury and players leaving who were not replaced.
In the GF it was a defensive game because the 6 again was hardly in play.
While ever the 6 again is in play - possession and the ability to take advantage of it - score/ convert - will challenge the best defensive teams.

The speed of the game has killed Melbourne. No more wrestle.

Storm have been the recipients of the triple whammy..
Long term injuries and retirements of several world class players
A discerningly rapid aging of their halves..again both world class players.Theyre not finished, but not what they once were(particularly Munster RWC will reveal if he still has it)
Changing speed of the game. Wrestle etc..and like us,they are not a fast team in outside backs
Think their window has closed

If they lose Harry that will destroy them I reckon. Don’t think they will though.

Plus. Bellamy is on the way out. He’s been a year to year proposition for the last decade, but he’s never really been in a position where he was going to stand down. But now with his illness, he wouldn’t have long left. You have to wonder if that’s had an affect on them too. Who knows how it’s affected his ability to communicate the way he always has.
