Signings, Suggestions & Rumours Discussion

Madden will play Cup. Our best performances last season were with Douehi as halfback and with Latu missing the start of next season, I expect Adam to be 7 and Latu to end up the 14 once fit
Yeah I can't see any reason to move Doueihi out of 7 it's his spot to lose, talk of him moving to lock seem premature but will probably end up there down the track.

A bit to unpack here.
As for the supposed confirmation bias. I am stating what evidence shapes my opinion. I think this is very logical to do in a discussion and not sure why you found it so annoying aside from it being a retort to your comment. You have essentially done the same thing by referencing market values in your argument.
Taking Chunk's one comment, without considering any of his previous comments in the discussion, then you are indeed 100% correct that KPP is better than the few players you mentioned.
However with additional consideration given to his earlier comments, especially given his initial statement was along the lines of our forward pack is a concern as we have no-one of the quality of of the many players on show during these rep games then I think his comments are fair enough and why I think comparing KPP to the hookers playing not a fair comparison. Even more so when a lot of people don't include the hooker when discussing the 'pack' since they've started to refer to them as a member the 'spine'.
As for KPP as a signing. That wasn't part of any of the discussion. He is a good player with the potential to be much better than he has shown thus far in a position we desperately needed. I think he is on a fair salary for what he has shown thus far as well. I think it is an excellent signing for a club in our position. As I said that wasn't the discussion and I see only one backrower from the rep teams mentioned whom I believe KPP is a better player than.
Finally, as for the same people criticising all our signings. I assume you mean me and/or chunk. I don't know Chunk's opinion on most of our signings (or his credentials), I don't typically pay much attention to user names when reading unless I think something is very insightful (Jolls as an example) or very stupid (plenty of examples but I won't name them). To be fair to you I have criticised some of our signings, either the player (Olam, Bird) or the value (Turuva, Sullivan). I have spoken glowingly of some signings (Skelton, Hunt whom I have since been unimpressed by) and been rather neutral on some (Luai doesn't have 1.2m of value in him but is the circuit breaker we needed).
I’ve already said the same thing twice . I’m not saying it a third time . I was critical of the Olam signing as well . And I’m not talking about objective criticism . I’m talking about a select group on here who shit on everything . I could name the names and stir up a bunch of trouble , but to what end ? It’s obvious. The self fulfilling, talking in circles style , I’m extremely critical of. It screams attention seeking to me. . I’ve already said 2 and a bit diatribes on this . That’s more than enough to get my point across.

When he was out, we couldn't score points and looked horrible. When he came back we started to string some performances and points again. It's not rocket science what the difference was
It's not what you do against Newcastle or St George - it's what you do to get your team over the line against the Melbourne's, Brisbane's etc and he's not the player that will ever do that for us.

How many of our 1-5 make the teams we oppose on a weekly basis ?
Taylan May helps as he would make quite a lot of the teams we oppose, but if we are being serious and take off our rose coloured glasses, the others would only make the starting line up of a handful of the teams we oppose and that’s being generous.
Only 1 player would be sought by other clubs.

While it may well pan out this way we need to be cogniscant of the stated bigger picture. If we step back for a minute and look at the plan and the signings the forgone conclusion that AD will start at 7 is a little shaky.
  • Luai was recruited to be our 7.
  • Galvingate blew up the plan mid season.
  • Latu F is a 6.
  • AD's performances at 6 have been pretty average.
  • Injuries, combined with a lack of depth in halves forced a reshuffle for the best interests of the team.
  • AD played two games as a half in the season - with a few bit parts thrown in. As a 7 he doesn't create much; however, he plays both sides of the field and provided Luai wtih a bit of width - which was beneficial to his game.
  • ADs general kicking game is below average. He lacks control; however, as a plus he can kick long and on occasions can launch a good, but uncontrolled, floater. His kick meters are better than Latu's and significantly less than Madden's.
Now lets look at Luai as a 7 when he was at the Riff. He performed well behind a good back that provided him with time and space. The key element though was Yeo playing as a link to get him a little wider. Of course there were a number of additional sweep options etc that were used but the thing to be mindful of is that Yeo at 13 and AD as a 7 play similar roles.

Personally I think that ADs performances at 7 have sealed his fate. He has shown that he can play the running link and as a result of having less decisions to make his defence in and around the middle has much more shoulder to it - ie the arm grabbing decreases significantly.

So, looking at it objectively:
  • Luai is still the long term plan at 7 (unless anyone has heard differently).
  • If Luai is the long term 7 why disrupt the season by starting him as the 6 for the first few weeks?
  • As options to replace the injured Latu at 6 we have AD, Madden and Mason with NRL experience and Andrews as a long shot, although it will depend on what he shows over the off season.
  • Potential NRL ready ball palying 13s, unless we recruit one, are AD and Bird.
We all know that getting to the finals is as much about talent as it is about depth. Depth is also more that players who can play the same postion in reggies - it is about playing the same style of play in the depth postions that allow the next man up to execute in the same manner. What makes sense then, based on the stated the bigger picture, and from an overall development perspective is:
  • Luai starts at 7 and plays there throughout the season as per the long term plan.
  • Latu starts at 6 post recovery from shoulder surgery.
  • Madden is fist drop halves replacement - experienced at 6 and 7, has a good kicking game and defends well. He starts the season at 6 and then drops back to Cup to develop Andrews.
  • AD to 13 with Bird as first drop replacement. A a ball playing 13 to replace Bird in 27 is developed/recruited.
This approach, in my opinion, is a closer fit to where Benji looks to be taking the club, but more importantly sets the playing framework in stone from day 1 of preseason. We don't start the season with a plan to chop and change - we start the season how we intend to end it with players in the role they were recruited to execute.

I know common sense, succession planning and depth through mirrored playing styles are not the Tiger's way, but neither is playing finals footy. So perhaps we should start doing what the good teams do instead of selecting players for postions based on our hearts.

The new anti-tampering rules that come in to play on Dec1 will make it a little bit harder for that sleazebag IM to play his dirty games through the media.
Moses will do his utmost to ignore the rules and continue on his merry way.The scum should have been banned for life but that only happens to lesser lights with little to no power who do far less damaging actions.
He would be the most obnoxious person in the NRL since Turdberg was part of it.

The NRL is set to threaten potential salary-cap penalties against any club attempting to publicly court rival players before they become a free agent, in a shake up to the game's anti-tampering laws.

In what looms as a significant change to the NRL's contracting rules, clubs and their officials will be banned from making comment about pursuing players not yet on the market.

The changes come after a year of contract drama, headlined by Lachlan Galvin's mid-season move from Wests Tigers to Canterbury with 17 months left on his original contract.

Under current NRL rules, players and their agents are not able to negotiate with rival clubs until the final season of their contract starts on November 1 each year.

But it has become apparent clubs have at times moved to signal their interest in players via the media well before then.

In turn, there is a belief this can influence players to not re-sign with their current clubs early, knowing interest from several parties could ramp up a bidding war.

Beyond the threat of salary cap sanctions, it is understood the NRL will be able to fine or even deregister club officials who flaunt the new rule

Canterbury general manager Phil Gould was accused of using his position in the media to publicly court Galvin this year, before the Tigers gave him permission to look elsewhere.

As far back as last August Gould predicted Galvin would "earn more money out of rugby league than any other player in history", labelling him "the best teenage footballer" he'd ever seen.

Gould later claimed it was "untenable" for Galvin to stay at the Tigers after knocking back an extension at the club, before the young half was eventually released to join Canterbury.

The Bulldogs supremo had always maintained a public position of having not yet spoken to Galvin, but his comments still raised the eyebrows of other clubs.

That matter prompted a push for tougher rules around the issue, which are now expected to come into existence this summer.

It's understood the changes to the rules have been undertaken in conjunction with the NRL and players' union, as part of a commitment to review anti-tampering laws in the last collective bargaining agreement.

The Galvin situation is far from the only time when officials have been accused of making a public play for a big-name player before they can legally open negotiations on November 1.

Several clubs this season made no secret of their desire to land Payne Haas for 2027, despite the Brisbane prop only becoming a free agent last weekend.

Under the new rules, this would also no longer be allowed.

Haas is yet to re-sign with Brisbane, but is not expected to be lured out of Queensland given his family situation in the area.

The game's other anti-tampering rules will continue to apply, including rival clubs not being able to negotiate with a player's agent until the final year of their contract.

Clubs are also unable to approach a rival team to enquire about their interest in a player being moved on to them, without seeking the player's permission first.

Do you reckon?
I have absolutely no confidence that the NRL can develop and/ or implement a set of rules and regs that will arrest the secretive underhanded tactics employed by Isuk Measles and the other 7% leeches or the inbetweeners like Pus Pooled, or even Mighty Boy’s comments.
The NRL probably give Uncle Nick last right of say before it gets sign off on.

I had not read this prior to my last post, but my statement still stands.
The NRL are piss weak.
If they wanna be serious and seen as having a backbone, then they should sanction Pus Pooled immediately.

And I say that without bias, I swear. 😇

@Snidest 0 no I don’t need a tin foil hat.

We would need Payne Haas and Joseph Tapine to help bring our backline up to standard.
That’s the harsh reality and 2026 will further demonstrate this.

Yeah I can't see any reason to move Doueihi out of 7 it's his spot to lose, talk of him moving to lock seem premature but will probably end up there down the track.
My only query would be that if Doueihi is still not fit enough for NRL physicality, give him a few more weeks to ready himself and put Madden in to cover.

EDIT_ Sorry guys, no idea how that ref from Vicious got there and I cant delete it. Suspect my stubby fingers rather than a computer glitch 🙂

Hmmmmm.............................

As if the NRL will sanction Gould over anything - given it's his dual roles that no other club has the privilege of that caused most of the outrage. The easy fix would have been to make him pick a lane.
There are few more than Gould that have crossovers - Anasta agent and Fox, Matty Johns and Gordon Tallis part owners of NRL team and Fox, Paul Gallen sharks board and 9, Greg Alexander panthers board and Fox. The NRL will have their hands full keeping a check on them and trying to muzzle agents in the media.

Fair enough.
I just think there are possibilities for a shuffle of positions depending on pre-season efforts and what Benji wants moving forward. AD at lock would open up a more attacking side.
AD certainly should be there somewhere. Not sure if Maddens form, come 2026 will be up to it.
And he would be great leading Andrews at 5/8 and Attard at fullback in KOE.
But we urgently need a half-5/8 combo that works and is sustainable to create some teamwork. Including a short kicking game option in the red zone.
IMO Latu not the immediate solution at 7 or 5/8 until gets some more experience and toughens up.

Thanks Sheensy.

I think the Luai at 7 project is over. He has played better for the WT with more space at 6 and when Latu or AD are there inside.

i think the left edge of Luai, Samuela and May is a certainty everyone being fit. Having May there really unlocked Samuela and Luai Combination. Hopefully the right side with addition of KPP can be effective as well.

Bring on 2026!!
