I know this because my wife is Scottish and careful to pick out anything inappropriately attached to Scotland, particularly if the word "scotch" is used.Thanks. Certainly didn't know that. Scotch eggs were a treat when I lived over there in late 80's. Stovies was my regular dinner. There was a small free weekly Australian news magazine that I would pick up on my way to work that had oz rugby league and union information for a minor dose of league news from the antipodes.
One explanation is "scotched" used to mean mincing of food, hence scotch around the egg.
