1988 Grand Final - Why wasn't Terry Lamb suspended?

One of the things that has always intrigued me about the 1988 Grand Final is - why wasn't Terry Lamb suspended for his hit on Ellery Hanley? It was blatant, it was the most important game of the year and it ruined our chances of a title. It set a dangerous precedent. Anyone who has studied that match would have seen Farrar run through Scotty Gale (a 7 pretending to be a centre) to set-up the dogs tries.

Just another example of us getting the rough end of it at the sharp end of the season.

1985 - Schofield try ruled forward pass then Farrar running length of field to score (Dogs eventual premiers)
1988 - Terry Lamb incident (Block suspended for remainder of season for a high shot on Chris Mortimer in the mid-week playoff vs Penrith for 5th)
1989 - Harrigan bullshit (we got cruelled by him in 2nd half, inventing reasons to give penalties against us)
2010 - The great scrum robbery (first scrum against the feed I have seen in years)

The thing that amazed me was no-one apart from Tigers supporters made any comment on the illegality of that tackle that I heard of for more than 15 years.

Shouldn't this historic stuff be in the Balmain Section and not the Wests Tigers section ??

Who cares about Terry Lamb decking the Pearl? Helloooooo it happenned **a generation ago !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!**

Different times, different attitudes from refs. There was a lot of dirty stuff in that GF, including Peter Tunks putting the slipper into Benny Elias. Lamb was a thug, makes my stomach turn every time he's interviewed. Canterbury had a plan and the plan was to get Hanley. Would have won the premiership that year if Roach had played

The Terry Lamb/Pearl incident has had plenty of exposure over the years especially when Lamb was unfortunately appointed Wests Tigers NRL coach with little experience, no one else wanted to coach us way back then.
The reason why the incident was missed because the TV camera followed the ball and there wasn't the instant replay for an off the ball incident available 22 years ago, the Pearl passed the ball then was hit high by Lamb which was apparently acceptable back then but, when you compare this tackle to the one that Blocker Roach was suspended for, Mortimer was barely inches off the ground but Steve hit him around the head, Terry Lamb had to jump 1 metre off the ground to take the Pearl out, double standards, 22 years on and I'm still seething.

Good to see you don't live in the past champ either :unamused:

Nothing wrong with recalling the past.

haha what made you bring this up larry?

I agree that we were dudded in both of those GF's. Poor officialdome lead to a string of Balmain, NSW and Australian legends finishing their respective careers without a premiership. They deserved better.

Spot on.
Cameras missed it.
Good teams, real good teams can overcome adversity, Balmain couldnt

Recall the past as much as ya want dude, just dont do it in the Wests Tigers Section if ya reminising about Balmain stuff.

Do I start a thread about how many tries Trevor Cogger scored in the Wests Tigers section ??

Bug the moderators dont seem to care about it so why should you and if you dont like it then dont post on the topic.

Heh bug you dont live in the past look at your pic on the profile.haha

Great side we had in the mid to late 80s and got rorted in 88 by canterbury clearly taking out our best attacking player.

89 a few decisions didnt go our way but we didnt have luck on our side either so maybe it wasnt meant to happen.

Nice to talk about the good times for sure and larry love the comments.
