2005 players against 2010 players

Seeing that we are dead set certainties to win the 2010 comp, I wonder which players from the 2005 team would make the 2010\. But after picking my own side its still looks alot like the 2005 team. Head to head I'd have to back the 2005 team. But as a merged side how would they look?

This is mine considering all players at their peak form.
I can't find any room for Tuquiri and Fulton vs Galea is a tough choice. I also couldn't dismiss Halataus 2005 form. Heighno's 2008 form just nudges him in front of Gibbs.

1\. Hodgson
2\. Tuiaki
3\. Lawrence
4\. Whatuira
5\. Richards
6\. Marshall
7\. Prince
8\. Skandalis
9\. Farah
10\. Galloway
11\. Ellis
12\. Laffranchi
13\. Fulton/Galea…..ummm Galea
14\. Halatau
15\. Cayless
16\. Payten
17\. Heighnington

whats yours?

Fats was a very average footballer who in my view was made to look good by Marshall and Prince. I would play Lote in the centres over him in a hearbeat.

My god you are an awful judge of talent, aren't you?

If we didn't have Whatuira's class in the backline that season, we don't win the comp.

How would that 2005 side have sone under the current rule interpretations and how would this side compete under the 2005 interpretations? Until I could answer that I couldn't answer the question properly

I think you mean Elford.

Just kidding. Fats had a stellar year in 2005\. Solid in defence and very elusive on his feet in attack. He did become somewhat ordinary in the later years.
Has Tuquiri ever played centre? Certainly looks better with Tuquiri at centre on paper. Its an interesting one Southern.

Fats played well in 2005 granted but was very ordinary the following years. Couldnt pass and couldnt tackle.

Not that I know of but I think he can handle. One issue would be whether is passing is good enough. But given we presently have Blake "I cant pass" Ayshford I dont really see that as a big issue. BTW I like Blake as a player and think he makes up for this negative with other aspects of his game.

We will have to disagree on this one. I think any reliable centre would have done a similar job. As I said, just above I admit he played well in that season but otherwise he was vastly overrated by fans IMHO.

I agree,
IMO Whatuira was a great player in 05, may have had some average years after but the 05 year was very hard to stop. Scored some great tries and like you said I dont think we would have won the comp without him. Would take Whatuira in 05 form over Tuqiri in 2010.

yep I found that one interesting too.

Fats was an an honest centre in 2005 and did everything required but I do think most first grade centres could have done a similar job - he is no Mark Gasnier. I was a bit harsh in my original email. I should have said "average" not "very average".

i would take tuqiri in 2010 in a heartbeat.

 I find it highly amusing that people get cut …..when you offer an opinion of a favorite player of theirs,,,that they don't agree with....they question that person's judgement of talent....

Yet when a player they might not judge as the best...it's again the same question... 😕

Impossible to compare '05 to '10 really....The game has changed a lot in that space of time....

A question to the original poster.....Which squad do you think is stronger...'05 or '10...?

Between Fats and Fitzy running sideways / backwards / tripping overthemselves….I dont know who was most confused....the opposition , us supporters or the guys themselves. As they say " ....if you cant dazzle them with brilliance...baffle them with bull !! " Seriously those two spent more time running in every other direction than at the opposition try line !! However...if it works it works...and it did in '05.

Hmm lets do this:

1 **Hodgoson** V 1 Molzten - Hodgson wins hands down
2 Richards V **Tuiaki** - both left wingers. i loved pat but tuiaki is an absolute beast
3 **Elford** V Ayshford - i have to give it elf, only very slightly, mainly on defence and experience
4 Whatiura v **Lawrence** - i was a massive fan of Fatz but Lawrence is just slightly better then him in every way
5 Fitzhenry V **Tuqiri** - even after playing zero games i have to give it to lote
6 Marshall V Marshall
7 **Prince** V Lui - no contest
8 **Laffranchi** V Gibbs - Boof was the most under rated forward in the comp whilst with us, should have been playing rep back then
9 Farah
10 **Skandalis** V Galloway - sorry but for longevity i have to have Skando. KG could overtake him this year though
11 **Galea** V Fulton - BG was awesome and should have been the CC medalist
12 O'Neil V **Ellis** - Ellis by miles
13 **Halatau** V Heighington - Dene was superb in 05

14 Gibbs V **Cayless** - if Cayless plays to his potential he will be awesome for us off the bench
15 **Fulton** V Flanagan/Mataka/Fitzy - 05 was Fultons best season
16 Payten
17 **Heighington** V Moors - i thought heighno was a future rep player for sure back in 05, he was dynamic off the bench

Again nice comparison…hard to argue with any of the selections...seems weighted toward '05 players...

Thought of another question....

Prime for Prime...'05 Premiers v '09 Stinking class act Storm...

Who wins?

Unfortunately, I believe that 05 side would get a lapping by the recent Storm side on paper. But if we caught them during our golden run it would have been a great match.

It's so hard to believe that Richards left
He was set to make Origin and would have cemented an Australian jumper had he moved to a bigger team.
shame
