2012 London Olympics

Got to remember that we are a tiny nation of 23 million people. We are up against powerhouse contries of 100's of millions and still medalling. We really should have no right being in the top 10 yet will probably end up there somewhere.

There has certainly been disappointments but we will also be shocked by someone - it happens every games. They are all giving their best.

Yes, we do well on a per capita basis, but how do we perform when you consider the proportion of our tax payments that are allocated to the Olympics? For every dollar of tax we pay, how much goes to these athletes? Are we one of the highest?

Depressing to think a review was completed of our sports funding which questioned why we are trying to compete with the big guns at the Olympics. The review suggested funding should be placed into junior sports to cope with childhood obesity which is on the rise - this would reduce pressure on our health system into the future.

The rebuttal from Coates is that we need to win gold medals because it makes the country feel good every 4 years.

It's a massive boost to our collective confidence when we do well, but success at the elite end, more importantly, motivates kids to emulate their heroes. Its the type of marketing for sport that money can't buy. If you look closely at the schedule of funding by the ASC, you'll find grass roots sports are well supported.

Not discounting the role of our elite athletes. They play an important role in motivating kids. However, I don't think the balance is right. We allocate too much to the elite end of the spectrum and essentially, it is a gravy train.

For the swimmers it's not a gravy train, it's the whole buffet car! Steph Rice was apparently awesome in defeat because she needs a shoulder reconstruction, while the clearly overweight Liesel Jones was proud of her efforts and felt she was there's to support the younger swimmers. How do these guys get a place on the team? Trials in March that's how. unbelievable.

while the clearly overweight Liesel Jones was proud of her efforts

I was very angry with those remarks.

There seemed to be a helluva lot of egos whinging about this that and the other before we even got there….no suprise theyre not performing

I guarentee the 'Missile' Magnussen will not be as cocky going into the next Olympics like he was for London..

Gotta laugh at these Commonwealth bank ads where 3 fans dressed in C.A.N. costumes follow Maggie around blowing smoke up his bum. Then a fat pessimistic 4th dude shows up wearing a T stands beside them and turns their CAN into a CANT. He continually tells him that he wont do any good at the games. Everything this bloke says has come true so far…...

Pretty poor marketing from the bank lol.

This gen of swimmers simply isn't as good as the last gen. Most of the team here wouldn't have made the team back in Sydney/Athens. The difference between us and the Americans is the Americans are consistently churning out gold medal quality swimmers, in every event. Has there been a swimming final yet that has not featured an American? Only a few of the current Australian team can be described as world class.

Sure it isn't sand particles ??

I thought all the synthetic surfaces had a fine layer of sand on them ??

Some of them are sand dressed and some are watered down. The reason is to create less friction on the surface. This aids people with friction burns when diving but is mostly there because the balls are dimpled and the watered down pitches allow the ball to smoothly scream across the surface without unexpectedly lifting and smashing someone in the face.

Yeah I got a laugh out of that too. Mr T has been spot on all along! Just goes to show that positive thinking doesn't always guarantee success.

I remember reading Susie O'Neill's book several years ago and she surprised me by saying that she wasn't big on positive thinking and she often imagined the worst before her races. Yet, she was one of our most successful swimmers ever - go figure.

Not saying they're not a great achievement, but I'm getting bloody sick of the silver medals - we're always second best! We can't buy a gold medal at the moment and the Poms have well and truly passed us now :frowning:

I really don't know where our next gold is going to come from, tbh. Maybe we won't get another, which would be quite sad. All the sports where I thought we had the best chance of gold are not delivering this time around. I thought we'd get some in the rowing for sure. Oh well, there is always cycling and diving and maybe the hockey, who knows. All I know is that New Zealand are in front of us on the medal board and that really sucks!

Pearson will get one. Long jumper is a possibility as well. Someone will grab one in the cycling. I hope. Cant have NZ beat us….

Might be good if a few no name nations beat us

Might signify changes need to be made

It will be a miracle if we get 7 gold now
