Was Paul Crawley, all the reporters are going hard for Ivan and Gus at the moment. Not including channel 9 as they have obvious ties with Gus.

I say good, lets hope they won't let it go either, and keep at it all next year, lets hope penrith start the year poorly and things esculate out that way

That was a great response by Go, I like the way both Pascoe and Go have openly stated there. Disappointment in Cleary and not tried to sugar coat it or try and hide it

I agreeish. I think Bennett probably was the best on the market, we just don't know if Newcastle Bennett or St George Bennett will turn up at Souths. McGuire seems to have a stack of grit, knows our players and gets us a pipeline to Souths.

Once again, our club is the laughing stock of the league.

For all the huff and puff about not letting Cleary go, Penrith well and truly called our bluff.

It's an untenable situation to keep a coach that has signed elsewhere if you're a club that's intent on rebuilding. This much is obvious.

As fans, we deserve way better than what's being dished up by our chair and CEO.

They've been totally outsmarted, failed to meet their self appointed KPIs and have repeatedly made bad decisions that are impacting on the future of our club.

This is the last straw for me. I'm calling on our CEO to be replaced immediately.

I'm very glad that you and happy tiger have little influence on the club if that's your summation.

Transformations are slow. You can't expect us to be on the same playing field as clubs like the broncos straight away. People who can't see that were on the right path and have knee jerk reactions like this are the reason we are where we are.

Go, particularly pascoe, are the best signings we've had in years.

We've got a premiership winning coach, a coe on the way (mostly funded from govt since we have no money - massive feat!), largest member base ever and nearing financial break even.

Yet we can't retain those we put in charge of the transformation.

Go and Pascoe are pretty good at blowing their own trumpet, but they've failed where it matters.

In the most two recent instances, management and the chair:

1 - Publicly backed a sub-par coach who caused major turmoil, only to sack him after the damage was done.

2 - Got comprehensively schooled by Phil Gould, losing a promising coach mid-rebuild.

Nobody expects us to immediately emulate the success of the Broncos. What we do expect is a competent leadership team.

Can someone explain how McGuire is like Jason Taylor as a coach?
While he had a team of big boppers, McGuire could coach a forward pack and give them some dynamic moves.

Both coached Souths, one slapped his players and got a knuckle sandwich. The other has a ring.
If I thought McGuire was like anyone it would be Brad Arthur but maybe with less grit. He did slack off post premier ship, but hey he seems like the kind of coach to me who will take the Tigers into the 8\. Biggest danger is he will wine about our facilities, biggest hope is he gets them fixed and we bee a real NRL team for once.
Cleary is a nice guy, who players love who wants to coach his son.

If he can he will play a forwards dominated game with little movement outside the middle third

And that is what happened at Souths , the minute he lost his forward dominance and Sammy and Teo left he went backwards results wise

He is too concerned /obsessive with the other teams weaknesses and not concerned enough with his own side's weaknesses

As was proven players recruited in don't re-sign under Madge …....the only player who hung around after being signed was Cook

Go back and look at who he is recruited ........many were failures ......some didn't even get on the paddock

I wish Madge all the luck I can muster , I am sick of our side coming close to making it through and falling at the last hurdle or going 3 steps backwards when stuff goes pear shaped

Wests Tigers chair Marina Go has urged the club’s fans to channel their anger towards Ivan Cleary into passion for Michael Maguire.

Go, speaking after the Tigers confirmed they had released Cleary from the final two years of his deal and signed Maguire as his replacement, has sensed the widespread disappointment and bitterness among the club faithful with their former coach.

However, the silver lining has been the club’s signing of Maguire, a proven performer who has already achieved something that has eluded Cleary over his coaching career — a premiership.

Go said the club had made a conscious decision to move on and she urged the supporters to do the same by embracing Maguire’s arrival — he will officially take the reins once he has finished his commitments with the New Zealand national side.

“There is bitterness from the fans,” Go said. “You see it on social media and read it in the forums. There is bitterness towards Ivan.

“We’re hoping that passion can be swapped — they will be able to swap that angriness with Ivan to passion for Michael. Some of them already have.

“The thing you love about your fans is they are deeply passionate and they feel everything. They were hurt by Ivan. They view this as rejection.

“Everyone’s response to this will depend on their particular relationships that they had with (Cleary). I can only comment on the way the board views this and there is disappointment.

“From our point of view, clearly in the end he didn’t want to do the thing he told us he wanted to do in the beginning — and that is why we appointed him — to build this club to something really special and it was always going to take more than three years.

“It would be different if there was an incident or we had a disastrous year, or something had happened in our club that he was unhappy with.

“If that is the case, he has never mentioned it to us and I have asked a million times. At the same time, an extremely successful coach has embraced the club and said I choose you.”

The Tigers tied Maguire down for three years — compensation from Penrith will help ease some of the financial burden — after also holding discussions with seven-time premiership winner Wayne Bennett.

Bennett originally approached the Tigers but talks were destined to reach an impasse over the Brisbane coach’s desire to see out the final year of his existing deal.

At the same time, the Tigers were in talks with Maguire, who was free of any club encumbrances. Maguire is also 24 years younger than Bennett and had the potential to be the long-term coach the Tigers craved.

“Timing was never, ever going to be right for us with Bennett,” Go said.

“What we could never reconcile with him was the timing and we were never going to force him to break his contract. To his credit, his position was he didn’t want to leave his club early.

“There was no negative to either of them. They were both great coaches. It is wrong to say he (Maguire) is our second choice. He was never our second choice. There were some things about Michael that were more compelling for us — that is the timing and the potential longevity of his appointment. We need somebody who is going to build this club.”

Cleary is expected to be announced as Penrith coach as early as today, allowing him to work alongside his son Nathan.

“This whole incident has made us realise the changed perception about our club,” Go said. “Years ago nobody wanted to come to our club.

“Be grateful we have been able to attain a really great coach. This is like a sliding door moment. You may look back at this and think ‘Wow, thank God that happened’. Our club has become optimistic.

“This is just a speed hump. I think we have to look at it like that.”

Great statement from Marina Go. With grace and elegance she has left no doubt about how the club feels about Cleary. I agree with her that it's time to move on and let Cleary live with his decision.

We are in good hands with Pascoe and Marina in change.
I’m glad that she mentioned about Bennett and his timing, that he was the one that got in toywe WT and he didn’t want to break his Broncos contract, it was more about the timing.
I prefer Madge myself.

'Good fit': Tigers' NRL title-winners back Maguire appointment

Wests Tigers premiership winners Pat Richards and John Skandalis have backed new coach Michael Maguire to finish Ivan Cleary's rebuild at the NRL club.

Maguire will take over as Tigers coach on a three-year deal after his appointment was confirmed on Sunday, with Cleary headed to Penrith on a long-term deal.

The former South Sydney mentor becomes the Tigers' fifth coach in eight years, but the first to arrive with premiership-winning experience since Tim Sheens in 2003.

"I think his record speaks for itself," said Skandalis, who is now an assistant with the Tigers' NSW Cup side.

"He got a premiership in England as well with Wigan and came over to Souths and got a premiership there. He's doing a great job with the Kiwis at the moment.

His record is enough to say he's a very good coach and good fit for the Club.

The Tigers haven't played finals football since 2011, but last year had their second-best defensive season in the joint-venture club's history as they finished ninth.

"Ivan has left the club in a good spot as well," Richards said while playing in a charity cricket match with Skandalis on Sunday.

"Madge (Maguire) is not coming in to a side that is struggling, they played really well last year and I think Madge will really help them continue to grow.

"He's great with the young guys coming through … He'll be tough on them but he's fair as well."

Maguire will arrive at the club's Concord headquarters when he returns from New Zealand's tour of England next month and will be there when senior players return for pre-season training on November 15.

He will be the only change to the club's football staff, as the Tigers made clear throughout talks with any potential coaches they wanted to keep their current department in place.

We were very transparent and forthright through the process that we feel like we've got a real strong high performance and football department," chief executive Justin Pascoe said.

"We're comfortable and confident in the program and I think you saw the improvement levels in strength and fitness and all the key attributes last year so that will just continue."

Penrith Panthers is delighted to announce Ivan Cleary has joined the club as NRL head coach on a five-year deal.

The 47-year-old returns to Panthers following a successful two-year stint at Wests Tigers.

Cleary previously coached Panthers between 2012 and 2015, guiding the club to a Preliminary Final appearance in 2014.

"I am very fond of Wests Tigers and all its people," Cleary said.

"I enjoyed my time there and it is a club heading in the right direction.

"I would like to thank Justin Pascoe and Marina Go for their professionalism throughout.

"I am honoured to be back as head coach of Panthers and very much look forward to being part of the future journey.

"Personally I had a feeling of unfinished business with a club and a community that my family and I enjoy a strong connection with, from grassroots through to NRL players, staff and management.

"We have raised our family in the community for a number of years and are proud to call it home."

Panthers Group CEO Brian Fletcher said the Panthers Board is confident Cleary will help the club achieve its full potential on and off the field.
