2019 Coaching saga -Thread

I'm on board the 'Wayne Train' if Ivan is off the bus, says Marshall

Benji Marshall hopes Ivan Cleary will remain ‘on the bus’ - but if not, the Wests Tigers star is ready to board the ‘Wayne Train’.

Wayne Bennett and Michael Maguire have been mooted as potential replacements should Cleary return to Penrith to reunite with playmaker and son Nathan. As revealed by Fairfax Media, the Panthers offered Cleary a three-year contract from 2021 and there are suggestions that the deal has already been done. That will put pressure on the Tigers to part company with Cleary immediately, particularly if they can jag a big-name replacement.

Cleary’s silence has been deafening throughout the saga and most expect him to end up at the foot of the mountains before the pre-season commences.

Marshall said he felt indebted to Cleary for handing him an NRL lifeline and expected him to honour the final two years of his Tigers contract.

“I still want Ivan to be the coach,” Marshall said. “He gave me my dream of coming back to the Tigers, he gave me that opportunity. I feel like I owe Ivan in a way. In talking to him before the season ended, he was adamant he was seeing out his contract. I don’t think he has any plans of going.”

Asked about Cleary leaving after so soon after forging his ‘on the bus’ mantra, Marshall said: “I feel like everyone is making a big deal about that. ‘On the bus’ is not about Ivan, it’s about the club. Everyone is making it about Ivan. He might have said those words accidentally, but it gave the fans and the players something to be a part of.

“Whether Ivan is there or not, we’re still a bus. It might be the Wayne train.”

Marshall has a strong bond with Bennett, who has been linked to the Tigers post. The seven-time premiership-winning mentor took a punt on Marshall at Brisbane, where the 33 year old proved he is still capable of competing at the top level. Bennett has a year to run on his Broncos deal but could seek the security of a longer-term option at the joint-venture outfit.

Marshall said Bennett would be an ideal candidate if Cleary was to depart.

“As long as he takes the coathanger out of his shirt,” Marshall quipped. “He gave me a chance at Brisbane, took a punt on me. I really enjoyed being coached by Wayne. His ability to get the best out of players and motivate you to get the best out of you on game day is something I’ve never seen before.

“If he wants to coach longer, there’s probably an opportunity to coach us for longer. Having been coached by him, he hasn’t lost it. He’s still got a bit in the tank he wants to see out.”

Marshall also has a connection with Maguire, who is currently coaching the New Zealand national side. Maguire wanted to take Marshall on tour with the Kiwis, but a calf injury prevented the pivot from again donning the black jersey. The pair have been in regular contact in recent months as the Kiwis prepares to take on Bennett’s England team.

“From talking to him, he’s a really great guy,” Marshall said at the launch of Mexican restaurant Zambrero’s ‘Plate 4 Plate’ initiative to mark World Food Day.

“He’s genuine and honest. I caught up with him four or five times at the back end of the season. Who knows? If it does end up not being Ivan, I couldn’t complain if it is Madge or Wayne from knowing both of them.”

Marshall added with a chuckle: “Maybe the Kiwis versus England, whoever wins gets the job. Who knows, maybe I’ll coach.”

Cameron Ciraldo will oversee Penrith until a definitive call is made on Cleary. Panthers prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard, currently in camp with the Kangaroos, conceded he was unaware who his coach would be when he reports for preseason training.

"I don’t even know what’s going on,” he said. “There are a few boys who want a few answers. I’m hearing Ivan. I’m hearing 'Ciro'. Who knows. It’s out of our hands.”

What the actual

it wasnt accidentally, it was a mantra he used to inspire the guys who were left.

For some reason I feel better about Maguire then Bennett. I think Bennett never really wanted to come here and that's not what we need. If Maguire really wants to be here then I'm happy with that. His no nonsense attitude will make the playing group stronger and hopefully put the plodders on notice. Scrap the 4 or 5 captains too, Lawrence can have one more year as captain, then its Luke's ship to steer.

Someone mentioned it earlier, Seibold and Bennett switching roles. I think that’s pretty close to the money if we sign Maguire. Bennett will not end up jobless if he doesn’t want to be. Based off Pom’s mail, I’d say in 2019

Cleary - Penrith
Bennett - Souths
Seibold - Broncos
Hasler - Manly

Something has to give very soon.

Yeah I said that yesterday. We need a coach now, Cleary and us both want to move on, Bennett and Siebold both have a year left. Madge told Manly to get stuffed apparently.

Makes the most sense.

I dont think its over yet. If it was that easy they would have just announced Maguire today.

To me its more about Bennett this move. Its saying you are either interested in 2019 or we are moving on. You decide.

We will hopefully have an answer soon.

Cleary winning record

Won - 140\. Loss 150

Madge
\
\
Win - 139\. Loss 83.

Yeah I can see how Madge isn't an upgrade on Cleary…. :unamused:

Dont let facts get in the way of your opinion
Mate.

I'm just saying that there isn't a debate. Maguire is better than Cleary. Bennett is better than Maguire.

I love the fact that our two choices are actually great coaches. Better than a Jason Taylor - Todd Payton choice.

It was a throwaway line. There was no deeper meaning behind it

The Real Issue…

Ivan has made his job Untenable at the tigera.
The tigers Board needs to show some mettle!
Fact
Maguire needs a powerhouse forward pack to play his preferred game plan..
A Bennet option would bring unprecedented marketing Sponsorship and recruitment opportunities.
A suggested option.
Sign Payten as a 1 tear interim coach with a view as Bennets assistant then to take over as head coach after A Bennet tenure of say a 3 year contract.
Decision
The Board must realise Cleary would work behind the scenes to bring some tigers with him to Penrith, every coach does it.
Do we allow this scenerio to unfold or knock it on the head.
The Broncos could feel the same way with Bennet and decide its best to part ways immediately to limit any potential damage.
That is why Ivans days are numbered.
A Decision must be made NOW.
Nov 1 is coming
The talk of Cleary and Pascoe no longer communicating is another very strong reason.
Im proud of the way the players keep out of the situation which is never easy.

Yes there was a mantra behind and yes it has deep meaning. He used it to the guys who ended up leaving the club. Forcing them to make a decision and let us know. They were either coming on this journey with him or they weren’t. He also talked about long term commitment from his players to what he was building. The man has no integrity and neither do some on here who follow people around like a bad smell lol lol lol.

I don't doubt were having a dip at him. But if he can't make it for 2019 I see us moving on Madge and the rest will fall as already mentioned.

Yes i agree he mentioned it in an interview about Moses i think it was. Regardless of that it was then used by the club. We can only assume with Cleary's approval. It was a rally call, one to bring us together. The club even used it in its marketing.

mantra = group of words in Sanskrit believed by practitioners to have psychological and spiritual powers

Not quite sure what you are trying to say or imply? The evidence of the club using the saying is there for all to see.

Now Facebook suggesting unveiling of Maguire on a 4 year deal is imminent. Oh, what to believe….

I think uncle Wayne wants to wait till 2020 and probably wants $3million or more for 3 years. We can probably get Madge now and probably pay less than that for 4 years. I think I’d go Madge 2019.

Payten has a contract with the Warriors..assistant coach

Not that I’d have him anywhere near our joint, but I doubt there’d be many clubs who would stand in the way of one of their assistant coaches taking a head coaching role somewhere else.

Thanks for back up TIgerpower.

I thought it was pretty common fact. Once again im surprised people want to argue and question things that seem so obvious.

Its not that hard to play nice and get along.
