David Furner is set to coach South Sydney in 2019 and turn his back on a lucrative contract with English club Leeds.

In the latest twist in the coaching merry-go-around, the Rabbitohs have given current coach Anthony Seibold until the end of this month to decide whether he will extend his contract at the club beyond the end of 2019.

Seibold is expected to say no, as he is eyeing the Broncos job, which is uncertain due to Wayne Bennett’s shaky relationship with the club.

That makes Seibold’s future at Souths untenable next season and the two are certain to part company.
Bennett was also linked with Souths but WWOS has been told the club prefers going with Furner, the current assistant coach of the Rabbitohs.

A former Kangaroo and premiership-winning forward at Canberra, Furner coached the Raiders with mixed results from 2009 to 2013.

He was recently appointed coach of Leeds but has a get-out clause in his deal.

This is very interesting - perhaps the first domino to fall. You'd have to think we'd be a decent chance to get Bennett if Brisbane let him leave a year early to accommodate Seibold.

I'd like to hear that we are conducting interviews with Demetriou, Walters, Bennet, Siebold Madge, Barrett, Ciraldo, Toovey and just about any other coach available in 19/20 and not just waiting to see who is left over.

I sort of like the idea of keeping all this behind closed doors, as Pascoe is suggesting, but we certainly look like the bottom of the list for the coaching merry go round at the moment.

I'm confused. What has the club said or done to make them look desperate? This thread has had more than enough melodramatics.

correct, however, for a bunch of children with short attention span, something new event must be happening every micro second :deadhorse:

It doesn't bode very well for us does it? The fact that we are having to bend over backwards to even get Bennett interested in coaching us doesn't fill me with great confidence. Both Siebold and Maguire seem to want the Broncos job as their first choice, Bennett is happy to come to Sydney so he can continue coaching, but I get the feeling he would rather take over at the Rabbits (or any other club with a stronger squad) than at the Tigers. I suppose the one saving grace is that we haven't yet been outright rejected like Manly were by Maguire (or so it was reported), but it still won't make me feel too good if we end up being someone's booby prize coaching gig because they missed out on their preferred option.

It's not unsurprising that we're not 1st choice for many coaches -we're just not one of the top teams in the league. We don't have a great roster nor to we have very good facilities.
 
And don’t forget an unemployed coach can sign knowing that the contract means nothing if they can get a better offer.

We will just sit at the bottom of the pile, await the fallout and sign another coach with limited options at that time

Why the hell would the Rabbits want to get rid of Seibold anyway? He's a great coach, had them playing some really good footy again this season after only a short time at the helm - it's madness! Broncos are going to be the big winners out of all of this.

It's not unsurprising that we're not 1st choice for many coaches -we're just not one of the top teams in the league. We don't have a great roster nor to we have very good facilities.

Top coaches like top players have choices… Top coaches Dont thave to prove anything to anyone despite mugs on forums calling for them to take up the challenge of coaching a bottom team... They've earnt their position on the pecking order
 
The way all the Kiwi Test players are talking up Maguire lately, he may end up coaching at the Warriors soon! Just shove Kearney out the door :laughing:

Same reason we have with Ivan, if the rumours are true about his move to Brisbane, his mind is elsewhere.
 
The last couple have pages have deteriorated.

From all reports Bennett is our number one option. From all reports we are his number one option. The issue seems to be 2019 vs 2020.

It will play out once the Broncos select their 2020 coach. Enough about being every coach's last option already. Errrrrr
