Here is my take on our NSW Cup trial on Saturday which featured most of our Development and T&T players including Bunty Afoa playing 70 mins (30 mins on the right edge).

NSW Cup trial v Newcastle – 7 February

1st half line-up

FB - Attard
LW - Brookes
LC - Herbert
RC - Max Taotua
RW - Tavana
5/8 – Andrews (left side)
HB – Matai (right side)
Lk - Murray
R2R – Jack, Laupepa
L2R - Mitch Taotua
FR - Broederlow
Hk - Haywood
FR Aho, Afoa

Observations:

-Only 2 interchanges all 1st half half for the WM. Afoa replaced Aho who went off after 10 mins with a HIA. Laupepa came on for Luke Jack with about 5 to go in the half.
-Was 2 tries apiece at half time. Thought we had the better of it.
-Best in 1st half: Broederlow, Matai, Afoa, Tavana, Jack...

What are your thoughts on Vaka Aho?
He looks likely - But I've not seen as much of him as I usually would have..

Hopefully he is a slow cooker type. Gets better with time. He's a decent size, a decent motor and can offload a nice ball. Just decent. Wouldn't call him powerful, wouldn't call him lumbering, not slow but not quick in leg speed either. Jury is out whether he is just a solid Cup player or can the next step to be a handy NRL depth middle. This season could be make or break.

Starting 13. So still have the bench.

I think the photo would have to be close to the starters except for TDM and potentially Skelton.
