We were never going to maintain that first 20 minutes, but I don’t think even the most jaded supporter could have predicted that big of a meltdown.Probably too embarassing for all to discuss?
Even more relevant given we were leading at half time, albeit by a narrow margin. For me, even when we were up 10-0, I always thought we woud crumble as soon as the Dragons started to get it together. Which they did. For this sort of result to happen (44-0) you have to wonder at which point players lost the belief - if they ever had it. Or what was said at half time.

Well, we could make an argument that the "weaker" teams don't get favors by the refs...However, I can cop this when the score is close, and a crucial decision goes against you. When the score is what it was last night, we really are climbing mirrors, your majesty 🙂 And in any case, the ability for a team to cop it on the chin and still put in, is a measure of how well they are coached, physically and mentally. One or two substandard games, I can also cop. When it becomes the standard (and the best we can do) I worry. There's no excuse for what happened. Doesn't matter what goes against you, you simply can't allow what happened.
However there are some things to highlight. I'm not blaming the ref, as I think we got a lucky penalty before half time that gave us the lead. So things go both ways. But to start the 2nd half we could have a recieved a penalty on 3 separate tackles coming out from our end, in fact I believe they were blatant penalties. We then kicked down field and Butler gave saints a penalty straight away for slowing down the play the ball when it wasn't even slow at all. Different rulings like that have to be stopped by the NRL. That got saints upfield to hit the lead. Then Sullivan can't help but be a nkb and gets 10 in the bin.
A miss kick by Hunt goes closer to the touchline then he intended and its now 6 minutes a man down and we haven't touched the ball.
Seyfarth then drops the back tackle 2, meaning Saints have 100% of the ball for the 10 minutes we are a man down.
We gave up.
It started with the ref, then stupidity by Sullivan, then luck for Saints, then stupidity by Seyfarth, then no heart
Yeah, they shifted up a gear alright and blew us away in the second half just like they did the previous week scoring 22 unanswered points to beat Penrith. We, the fans, need a honest response from the club as to WTF happened at half time and in the resulting 2nd half. If contracts have to be torn up so be it, but I do think its deeper than that.
I think Saints shifted up a gear and just blew us away, we couldnt compete against a big side (WT have long been too small in forwards and backs against the general league trend of bigger guys), the usual brain fart sin bin just collapsed the team morale, and such senior players that we do have are fading - Api being the exception.
Why can we never shift up a gear? Are we too fragile to listen to someone tearing us a new one?
