5th Tackle

Taylor tactics. Bomb everytime to the corner. Usually uncontested.

Its stupid and ineffective and takes the pressure off every time

why is it ineffective? more often that not, we have to kick from inside our own half and we make the first tackle ~10-15m. it's overused and boring but it's still effective. what would be more effective is trying to find space between winger and fullback each time but only a couple of halves in the game can do that.

the bomb gives the chasers plenty of time to get there and form a line.

Every team uses basically the same tactics, the mid field bomb is more effective than giving the other team seven tackles from the 25\. Okay granted some mid field bombs are better place and executed than others. The Titians puts some great ones up in their last game that caused havoc. Really your kick is usually only as good as your yardage game, very hard to put a great kick in when your on the back foot

I'd like to see us even run the ball on the last.
Beats some of the s*** kicks we dish up regularly.

Id like more of that as well, but Brooks seems to pick the wrong times to do it - Like around halfway. As bad as our kicking has been, (especially attacking kicks close to the line) I don't know if that's the worst we're contending with. Our marker defence is appalling at times and communication in both offence and defence is pretty shabby as well. These guys have had far too long together to have excuses in that regard now. It needs to be sorted.

I agree 100% with macman.
Drives me mad that we can't build pressure with repeat sets.
Every first grade 7 or 6 needs this in their arsenal. Probably one of the first priorities.

Brooks looks terrible atm and the chasers aren't providing much support at all. What happened to the combination Brooks and Teddy had with the in goal grubbers.
Our 5th tackle options look like spur of the moment decisions with no communication with the chasers.

Surely by tackle 3 you know what 5th tackle play you are going to go with. Why can't they organise themselves for it?
For mine, this is one of the most disappointing aspects of Brooks game this year. Either he's not thinking a couple of plays ahead or he's not communicating with the chasers for the 5th tackle option.

The criticism of the bombs is mostly misguided - every team in the comp uses the same tactic.
Moses was particularly good at it in the second half last week.
The idea is to give the ball plenty of depth (landing within the 10m line) and air time, allowing the chasers to get up on the returner and trap them well down in their own end.
It's not supposed to be a 'contest' for the most part, more a mechanism for gaining the advantage in field position.
The execution (and chase) is an issue at times, but the concept itself is based upon sound reasoning.

That said, the short kicking game inside the opposition 20/30m line is abhorrent week after week. Too many pre-meditated trick shots and not enough playing to the situation.

They do not get very much practice at attacking 5th tackle kicks, more often than not its a mid field bomb because they have not made enough yards in there set to get to a attacking position or they have turned it over before the last. Although I do agree on the odd occasion they get then self in a real good position on the last the blow it was a very poorly placed kick, bomb or short kick

This is what I was going to say, too often we are ending the set on or near the half way line and there's no chance for an attacking kick.

I've seen us roll a few good grubbers in for repeat sets but maybe not enough

The bomb is a defensive tactic entirely. We rarely ever chase them with any intent or gusto. and many times, the bomb goes up when better options are available. This wasn't something that Potter or Sheens practised.
