Eight children stabbed: Full story
Eight children have been found dead in the suburb of Manoora in Cairns, Queensland Police have confirmed.

Police were called to the house in Murray Street about 11.20am following reports of a woman with serious injuries.

During an examination, police found the bodies of the children, all aged between 18 months and 15 years.

The woman, 34, is receiving treatment for her injuries and is assisting police with their investigations.

She is in a stable condition, Cairns Detective Inspector Bruno Asnicar said.

"As it stands at the moment, there's no need for the public to be concerned about this other than that it's a tragic, tragic event. The situation is well controlled at the moment," he said.

"There shouldn't be any concerns for anyone else out of this environment and as we progress further we'll be sharing the results of our investigation.

"The crime scene is being locked down. That includes, from me. Nobody goes in there until our forensic people are finished and until we have done that we're not going to be able to clearly establish any relationships.

"This is not a small job, we're not taking this lightly at all. We don't do that here in the Far North, This will be done to the nth degree and we will cover every angle before this is finished."

Detective Inspector Asnicar could not confirm the relationship between the woman and the children.

However, the woman's cousin, Lisa Thaiday, told AAP at the scene the children were all siblings.

The woman was their mother, she said.

Ms Thaiday said another sibling, a 20-year-old man, arrived home to find his brothers and sisters dead inside the house.

He is now being comforted by other family members.

"I'm going to see him now, he needs comforting," Ms Thaiday said.

She described the family and extended relatives as close-knit.

"We're a big family and most of us are from the [Torres] Strait," she said.

"I just can't believe it. We just found out [about] those poor babies."

About 20 to 30 people, including neighbours and locals, could be seen to be visibly upset and comforting each other at the scene.

A neighbour on Murray Street, who did not wish to be named, said the family was "pretty quiet".

"They kept to themselves," he said.

A Mobile Police Facility has been established, and officers from the Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch, Child Protection and Investigation Unit, Scenes of Crime and Scientific section are investigating at the scene.

Detectives are searching through the home and its backyard, The Cairns Post reported.

A crime scene was set up around Murray Street and the road is closed.

Manoora is a suburb of of the far north Queensland city of Cairns, and is about four kilometres from the central business district.

FT, why the hell does this garbage keep happening..its almost xmas and instead of reading joyful things such as someone giving a homeless person a food and clothing hamper for xmas or other nice reads,we keep hearing disaster after disaster..
First the lunatic at the siege and now children being stabbed….

the old saying.....no news is good news.....

my heart and prayers go out to the family of these poor children....

Its is beyond belief how anyone could carry out such an horrific act - I'm often saddened at the atrocities that humans can inflict on others but this has shocked me to the core.

This, the Seige and the school murders in Pakistan. All in one week. How sick and twisted are some people.

Jesus Christ….. either seek help or take your own life , but to murder 8 kids , there no excuse or reason at all IMO .

Felt my stomach drop as I heard it on the way home. An absolute
tragedy, along with the huge loss of children's lives in Pakistan earlier this week.

Whilst the siege in Sydney ended terribly, for me, the above incidents have had a much greater impact.

Horrible news.

This was apparently a Torres Strait Islander family. The relative at the scene was a Ms. Thaiday. Can imagine they were probably related to Sam Thaiday.

Mac

You have to be kidding don't you

The girl has the same name as a NRL player and she automatically becomes probably family

Until it comes out one way or the other a touch of respect would be nice

I sure as hell reckon those 8 children deserve it

My gravest condolences to the family and their friends

To paraphrase John Prine:
Some humans ain't human
Though they walk like we do
They live and they breathe
Just to turn the old screw
They screw you when you're sleeping
They try to screw you blind
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind

What can you say

There were 130 kids murdered by the Taliban the other day as well.

I'm ashamed to be apart of the human race sometimes.
