8th spot is there for the taking.

Penrith are a weird team - they really could have had a good crack at the top four this season had they kept both Segeyaro and Soward. Hell, even with their current squad they should be doing a lot better IMO.

What's the problem at Penrith?
Was it the massive clean out. Luke Lewis ripped them a new one.
Or is it Gould ?
Why let all your experienced players go.

Odd isn't it. They were towards the end of their rebuild, and blew up the team to start another rebuild.

crap coach

it filters down, cleary was miles better

wonder if we could get him if JT doesnt pan out

Griffin is a dud. The Panthers roster should be challenging for the top 4 but the coach is an imbecile.

We're a genuine chance i think. The teams directly above us are average and we're hitting form. I'd even go as far as saying Parra are a bigger threat behind us than anyone in front of us.

.

Agree re Griffen.

What about our roster though?

I would think it is not far off Penriths.

We have 3 Origin players, plus ex origin players and international in Grant and Taylor, plus the young halves.

Personally i think both sides should be doing a bit better.

Since the Canberra game we've been fine,

If the Titans and Parra both win this week, we'll be on 18 points with the Dragons, Panthers and Titans. The Warriors as well if they get beat by Manly too.

i dont care how we go in the semis, i just hope we get there somehow , would be great to see the team playing finals again.

I'd love to see the same BUT no point getting in and getting kicked out first round
They need to be ready mentally and physically, neither they have been consistent with unfortunately.

One thing is for certain, we control our own density to either finish in the top 8 or bottom 8.

I think the other way around. If we can somehow get in, i reckon the other teams wouldnt want to play us. And evrn if we lose, that taste of finals footy will be great motivation for next year. Up the tigers, our destiny is in our own hands.

I agree. We just about always push the top teams to the end.
A team that can score points will always worry opposition coaches.

Penrith have many of the same problems we have:

1) They have invested in juniors who despite the obvious upsides cannot put together consistent weekly performances or haven't quite come on as hoped - DZW, Waqa Blake, Cartwright, Jennings Bros.

2) They have some experienced players who are losing form - McKendry, Segeyaro, Soward, Wallace.

3) They are taking a punt on unproven young halves - Martin, Cleary, Cartwright.

4) They have a more or less decent roster that can't string games together. Guys like Yeo, Campbell-Gillard, Latu, Hiku, Grevsmuhl are all clearly FG quality but aren't switched on every week.

5) Some big signings who haven't really improved the winning dynamic of the team - e.g. Merrin, Idris.

6) They have some cultural issues as evidenced by recent clean-outs of players. Unlike Tigers, I would argue Penrith's clear-outs have played consistently good football at other clubs, perhaps even got it better. I posted a list elsewhere but both Jennings and Lewis played Origin post Panthers. Then guys like Wade Graham and Blake Austin in career-best form. Gordon and Elijah Taylor going well.

This year also Penrith have depth issues particularly with injuries in the centres and halves.

Cowboys ??

Warriors ??

Canberra ??

Penrith ??

Eels ??

Titans ??

Saints ??

Not even one is a gimme , yet some are expecting us to win 6/7 ??

For it to happen we have two weeks to find some real consistency

Maybe we need a trip to Kiama to save our season ??

We've turned the corner in the second half of the yr, why does the season need saving? That draw is decent, give them a chance.

It could be a worse draw. It Could include the Roosters, Storm and Brisbane.

The best thing is apart from Cronulla and the Cowboys, we are playing teams all around us - So when we win, we will make ground, AND leave someone on the same points they were on.

Just gotta keep winning - It's not about "OMG TIGES CAN WIN DEM ALL WE RULE" It's just as they say"

"One game at a time"

We have the second worst defence in the competition - that's what needs saving.
We're playing with more confidence and belief, but our defence just hasn't improved at all.

I know a lot of us forumers love stats so i thought i'd post the following in regards to the Attack vs Defence argument.
This is where we are at this year after 19 rounds (both byes included)

After 17 games 7.wins and 10.losses.
351 points for /20.64 per game.
438 points against /25.77 per game.

Round 1 to 8 (after Canberra loss).
After 8 games 2.wins 6.losses
154 points for /19.25 per game.
217 points against /27.125 per game.

After our better run. (Souths win till now).
Round 9 to 18 9 games 5.wins and 4.losses
197 points for /21.9 per game.
221 points against /24.5 per game.

Excluding the Canberra game (completely writing off any record).
Round 1 to 7 games 2.wins 5.losses.
148 points for /21.14 per game.
157 points against /22.4 per game.

Total Points for/against excluding Canberra
Out of 16 games 7.wins 9.losses.
345 points for /21.56 per game.
378 points against /23.63 against.

For those who have compared this season to 2009
…. 2009 ....
After 17 games also 7.wins and 10.losses
365 points for /21.47 per game.
367 points against /21.59 per game.

This years stats still don't come close to 2009 however the difference with that year by the end of round 19 we were 2 games into our 6 game winning streak.)

It is however clear to see that by writing off the Canberra game completely. That all year our attack has remained steady and unfortuantely our defence has slightly declined.
I don't have the answers or the solutions but I will leave you by saying it has been an enjoyable year watching the team this year regardless.
What is improving game by game is our missed tackle numbers, our error rate, completion rate and penalty rate.
Not to mention the team is steadedly growing in confidence and playing more compossed each game.

Nice - appreciate the stats.
Interesting that our defensive numbers are worse than 2015, even with the Canberra game taken out (we conceded 23.4 pts per game in 2015).
I don't know or really care who is responsible - whether it's Kidwell, JT or Dawn Fraser - but it's the major issue stopping us from taking that next step.
Our defence actually started pretty well last year. We were under 20 ppg or close to it up until our 15th game, and the figure steadily increased from there. We've now gone in the other direction again in 2016.
Why are we conceding more points as time goes on rather than the other way around?

id love to see stats for our right hand side. The team has improved significantly in attack. Our defence is better, but why do i not see any improvement on our right hand side. Its cost us again on the weekend. I dont expect them to be perfect but surely some improvement has to be made. Id give anything to see them in the finals, some improvement in our right hand side will help us get therr.
