A goal kicker...and a captain...

I can't understand why Benji and Mbye can't kick more accurately. They hit the ball so sweetly and get a nice curve on it too. I remember the 90s with Balmain and I just wanted a kicker who could make the distance to the goal from the sideline. It was desperate times. Now these guys hit them beautifully but alas... You accept they won't get 50% of them from the sideline, but it's the in between ones they miss that kill us.

Mbye stabs at the ball with a poor follow through
Benji hits em sweet but I’m told his hammy’s ain’t up to it

Can you get down to the sidelines and explain it to Mbye? Someone's gotta help him.

Benji was never an accurate goal kicker. Like everything Benji does, he'd hit the beautiful one from the sideline and then miss the one he should have got. Damn it's going to be awful when he's not playing the game anymore.

Benji was third choice on the weekend and he had the shits big time I reckon !

After he made the conversion ( which was easy ) His thoughts were ...
“ Jesus Christ.. do I have to do everything round here “
?

People seem to remember Benjis goal kicking very fondly, I remember him as a 70% goal kicker who missed plenty of sitters.

I went to my local footy comp and we had a fella in third division who didn’t miss one from the sideline yet in a team full of players getting paid hundreds of thousands not one can do it

YES!! Had completely forgotten that.

It’s easier said than done going out and looking for a goal kicker, cos you need one who warrants being in the starting 17 every week. It looks easy, until you are trying to find one. No point signing a Kerrod Holland who is a pretty accurate kicker, but barely a first grader. Our best hope is trying to get one whose under contract at another club, but who? Frustrating we can’t find a guy like Garrick. A guy who is an above average kicker, and would slot into a position we could use a guy like him.

Funnily enough, best goal kicker I ever saw was Shayne Hayne the ref when he played in group 21 for the Muswellbrook Rams. At one point he was challenging Mick Cronin's 26 in a row record.

Mbye is probably the worst goal kicker I can recall us ever having. Marsters perhaps the same level.

Their problem is they have no consistent style. Every kick is different. Some he swings strongly from the left to right. Some go straight as an arrow. Some even occasionally reverse swing right to left.

All the greatest goal kickers have a consistent strike. Whether 5m to the side of the posts or right on the sideline they address the ball the same way, have the same pre kick ritual and strike it consistently the same style. Mbye simply doesn't do this. He just hits the ball and hopes for the best. He's had enough chances. He should be practising an hour a day after training.

I rate him worse than Marsters as he's been a goal kicker since his juniors. Esan never kicked but saw the opportunity to add to his skills to cement an nrl spot worked hard and became first choice. I give him credit for taking the initiative to do so, even if it ultimately didn't work out for him.

I don't understand at all how we haven't had a good goal kicker in years. I played social grade footy last year and even our goal kicker was better than anyone we've trot out since Pat Richards.

Even Mitchell Moses was garbage when he was here. We have had Jason Taylor, Richards and Brett Hodgson - all fantastic goal kickers in their days - through this club at some point. And yet still not a single goal kicker. You'd have thought we would've produced at least one or two guns with those three in your ranks.

That is a really good point re Mitchell Moses that I had not thought of. He was inconsistent and had poor technique with us...yet now is an 80% kicker and kicks consistently. Why do ours not improve? Mbye and benji line up and try and chip the ball over rather strike it with authority. We have not had a kicker improve for years.

All valid re Moses...really noticeable the way his technique changes kick to kick almost. You are right, he just looks like a bloke who hits them and hopes.

Does anyone know if we have a kicking coach? I have never heard Madge mention kicking issues...

Hodgo does it.

Re the captain part of this thread, when was the last time you say Mbye race up to the ref, shirt-front him, and demand answers ala Cameron Smith, Boyd Cordner, James Graham etc.? Do that often enough and penalties will miraculously come your way - sometimes just one penalty can make the difference between winning or losing. Being nice doesn't cut it when the other teams all get down and dirty.

Ha! Our team is made up of barely first graders! . A goal kicker who can barely play could replace any single player on our team. EASILY.
By the way, heaps of specialist goal kickers have been average players. Think Darryl Halligan, Hazem, there really are heaps - and they more than warrant their spots.

Loved him, both as a kicker and a limited ability centre and whether he could convey knowledge or not, doubt he would be able reasonably strike a ball to provide an example nowadays.

All on a mound of sand as well .

I remember a game at Leichhardt in the 80’s we beat the drag queens with conlon kicking the winner 10 in from touch, 10 inside our own half. Swear it was still going up when it crossed the black dot.....

Might have been about 58m out and some 13 or 14 in from touch, but it was an absolutely awesome kick on a great afternoon.
