Aaron Woods shutting out Dogs’ dramas

Gee, Lazzo gave Woods a serve for his origin performance. "First set, he backed into the line. You can get away with that in the NRL."

Lazarus said he wasn't going to single players out and then proceeded to do so. Politics is obviously his calling, recalling he was a Clive Palmer senator

Meh… Justified criticism

Spot on, the slow hit up and back in to the line is garbage that has irked me for years, no good at NRL level, laughable at origin level.

I am one of Woods' biggest critics and have been for a long time. Mostly because I don't get all the hype around him. Was Laurie Daley really considering him for captain of NSW if Cordner was out??

But…that being said....I think he's been as good as ever for WT over the last few games and I respect him for that. He has a dig.

Sure, it's limited in its impact but it always has been.

I don't think he deserves the harsh treatment he's getting here. Unless you've suddenly all woken up to how limited he is. He's pluggin along like he mostly always has.

Glenn Lazarus takes Aaron Woods to task for poor tactics
July 16, 2017 2:23am EDTJuly 16, 2017 2:23am EDT'You can't get away with that in Origin footy'

Former New South Wales hardman Glenn Lazarus has jumped on the Origin blame train, claiming Aaron Woods is responsible for the Blues' game three defeat last week.
Lazarus, who played 22 matches for New South Wales and 22 Tests for Australia, reckons one of Woods' infuriating tactics is to blame for a lack of go-forward.
"The very first set of six, he's backed into the defence," Lazarus said on The Footy Show on Sunday.
"He does it at club level and gets away with it because the defence isn't as intense or committed.
"So he gets offloads away and creates a lot of opportunities for the Wests Tigers.

"But at Origin level, you don't get away with it. He got dominated at the ruck, he was held down for an eternity.

"The poor bugger that took the next hit-up got smashed.
"What NSW needed then was our big guys to go forward and complete the set of six rather than backing into the line."

Woods has occasionally come under fire for the tactic during NRL footy as well, with Tigers fans claiming he loses momentum by twisting around in the tackle.

This assessment by Lazarus is spot on. Woods is a fantasy football prop his go forward and play the ball speed slow down the attack and his front row partners struggle.

This criticism has been a long time coming. A handful of us have been saying this for 3 or 4 years now. His stats mask his effect on the game. He could have Scotty and Jesse B running the next hitups and they would struggle to crack 120 meters as the line has time to fully set and muscle up.

Well it really depends who your chairman is - who the real powerbroker is at the club. I would not at all be surprised if chairpersons like Nick Pappas or Nick Politis directly addressed players in the sheds, they've been around far longer than the current coaches. I would be surprised if Marina Go assumed to dismiss Cleary to do what Ray Dib did.

Different clubs have different constitutions, right? So what staff can and cannot do will be different even if they have the same job title.

I'd be shocked if many people at all could name the current Rabbitoh and Roosters CEOs (Blake Solly and Joe Kelly resp.).

That's a fair point.
That said, I tend to consider the sheds, training pitch and so forth as the coach's territory - so Des's domain. If he's all good with Dib coming in to address the team, then no worries. But if he's pulled rank to have a dig at everyone, then that's fairly emasculating IMO.
I guess it depends on the exact circumstances, as well as what was said. Hard to trust Hooper on either point.

I agree with you that the coach's authority should be sacrosanct, but really what position could someone like Dessie or Trent Robinson take when it's known to all that Ray Dib and Uncle Nick are the ones signing the cheques?

What I personally feel is the huge mistake, if Ray Dib really did step over the coach to address the players, he only just extended the coach a few months ago. If you are the true powerbroker and you rubber-stamped a coach extension, you cannot then go and erode his authority within a few weeks, that's just setting yourself up to fail.

Yep, seems to be a lot of ad hoc decisions going on over there. Long may it continue.

I think the Bulldogs offered him bid money, hoping that Teddy would come with him, I believe they wanted Ted more than Woods as they had enough forwards already.
I think Woods has done us a favour, for the money he was being offered.
I didn't see all the Manly game but at least he has been having a go for us.

Our props need to hit the ball up with power, bend the line and hit their elbows and knees and play the ball fast.
If they stand in tackles they need the power to offload the ball whilst moving forward not backwards is a bonus.
Dominating tackles and ruck defence would also be a welcome change.

You know what absolutely shits me!
We have a turnover 20m out from our line 5m in from touch and we have the ball… guess who is always playing the ball? WOODS! Why doesn't he take a run up?

Our tough runner in these situations is Nofa. We have no forward leader that takes these runs. It will change with Packer and Matulino they both take tough carries and dominate with the ball.

I think it's soft seeing the captain playing the ball.. It would be okay if it was Edwards or something..

Unfortunately Woodsy is not a leader of men , he showed that the day he decided to bail out on his mates and become a dog

He showed it long before that when he refused to back the club publicly. It was a dog act.

I could never understand why a star plays DH and passes for example when out on the wing J Hayne will go DH - surely he should be lining up for a potential run.
