ACTION ALREADY FOR 2013

I remember watching John Dorahy go around for the maggies…...I thought he was pretty good. Gary Jack was awesome. But agree Slater is probably the best I've seen.

Chalk and Cheese.

Different ball, different training, different grounds (check out the 1963 Grand Final at the SCG), different ref's, different administration, different teams.

Most of the players in the "old" days had a job to go to during the week. I still maintain that if the best players from that era could be dropped into this era they would be just as good if not better than the players of today.

I have never seen a better or more dynamic player than Reg Gasnier. What a player.

Churchill changed the way fullbacks played and he was a bit smaller than Slater.

We will never know, but there have been good players in every era. As I stated earlier, Gasnier was dynamic, but come to think of it, when he is on his game, Marshall is pure dynamite and a pleasure to watch. A genuine freak of a footballer, can do what no other player can do in this day and age.

Agreed… I dont think I can find any other player to compare Benji with. He is definately on his own and is unique. I couldnt yet class him as one of the greats of the game, but in 10 years time, I'd say we will see many new players try and emulate Benji on the field. Only then will we have something to compare and debate about how great Benji Marshall was/is.

If i had the choice as a coach between Lockyer in his prime at fullback or Slater, id pick Lockyer. Bigger the game, the more he steps up and that just gives him the edge IMO

Thats the big difference…Benji on his day,& in the mood,is probably as devastating a runner Ive ever seen, but he can also be very ordinary & against the better teams can be contained.
Lockyer is a leader,a playmaker, great boot, all of which provide consistent performances which actually get better the more important the occasion

Never saw Lockyer at fullback but the old man raves about him being the best.
How many years did he play fullback ?

How old are you?

Darren Lockyer played the following games at Fullback:

165 NRL Games
18 State of Origins Games
27 Tests for Australia

If you want to be a future NRL Fullback, find some footage, look it up and enjoy!

Locky was great at fullback.

IMO Billy's energy around the ball and support play, as well as how often he takes the ball on the full makes him the best for me. Locky was clearly better as a ball playing fullback.

I guess the moral of the story is I'd find room for either in my team

Locky was a great fullback but even better five eight

Disagree with u on that one Happy….i like Lockyer as a fullback more than a 5/8, but his move to the 6 worked well for him as he would have struggled to maintain the standards he set at fullback after his knee injury.

Slater is a freak. He's revolutionized the way fb's play. The amount of work he does off the ball to constantly get himself into the right position at the right time is mind blowing

Actually it was Clive Churchill that did that.

Ask every media commentator and 99% of them will say Slater is the greatest fullback in history. Players from the past such as Churchill will alwayz have question marks over them to how they would handle the game today in regards to how much the game has changed. The game is a thousand times quicker then when Churchill was playing. They are fitter, stronger and all-round more athletic then players from previous era's.

But that doesn't make them any more or less talented! You show your talent through the rules of the day. And how do you know what every media commentator is going to say? Have you already asked all of them?

Not questioning their talent, just stating the fact that the majority of past players would struggle to cope with the speed of todays game. And no I haven't asked, but have heard enough of their opinions to come to that conclusion

Should never compare players from the past as they were not professional players like to-day, but i am sure Churchill & other great players from the past would of been just as great as to-days players if they had the chance to train full time like the players do today.

Spot on tb.

I am sad to say that some fans of today's game do not have any interest in the past players or history of our great game.

If they did they would realise that most of the players named as "the greatest" come from the distant past or not so distant past. If they played today they would be just as great.

eg. Churchill, Lewis, Gasnier, Langlands, Irvine, Beetson, Tommy R, Sterling, Raper, Fulton etc. etc.
