Adam Doueihi #227

My views might be a little old school but captaincy to me is someone who
- squad looks up to
- motivational
- is like the onfield coach when things aren't going right and gives the spray & direction and again the team responds to

The last bit especially requires someone typically from the senior group. It's hard to picture someone young and new to the club regardless of how much of a gun you are to have this aura on you. You could put off senior squad members... Like one of the commentators said, its the senior members are the ones that could get a coach sacked

The way im seeing on field now, Benji is the real captain, Mbye is the captain being groomed. When Benji retires, and a year more mature, maybe that's when we really see Mbye take the reigns.

Doubt it. Can’t see Mbye ever being the real captain. When Benji does retire I think someone else other than Mbye will be calling the shots.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on Mbye’s leadership. Does anyone on here know him? There’s a reason he is captain. I agree his form is down but he must be a strong leader. Can’t imagine Madge picking and sticking if he was soft

I can imagine that for Madge other team priorities have taken precedence. Mybe is probably a safe choice for now. Besides, when Benji plays he is the real captain out on the field.

IMO Mybe is lucky he is still in the top 17. There hasn’t been many options with the outside backs, but that may change.

Rowdy should be captain, a genuine captain considers it an honour to lead his teammates, Rowdy is that man.

Just because you have been at that club for a long period of time doesn’t make you an automatic qualifier, Chris gives the impression of an introvert and comes across as being shy.

Have you seen him speak to the media?

I have, he constantly trips over his words.

Don’t really want to bag douehi he’s very safe at the back but all the good sides have a fullback with X factor

I’m warming to Doueihi. If he is Mr Reliable without the X factor that’s still a very good option.

Close to the line he can do damage with his running and passing. Never gonna be a guy to run the length of the field though

Yeah he needs fast support he can pass to once he is through the line.

Signing Johnston for next year is one way to fix that.

The club can do better than Johnston ... got to strive to break the mediocrity cycle of other club cast offs !

We'll agree to disagree on that.

Been a big fan of AD the last month as he has grown into the fullback role. He has got pretty safe hands at the back and it’s nice to not have to hold your breath as the ball is kicked to the other end.

However, his performance tonight was a touch concerning. Caught out on multiple occasions, which could be a result of coaching instruction, in which case fair enough. Will have to work on his speed and tackling technique perhaps. RCG during his line break and almost everyone else seemed to be faster on every contest for the ball. Either way he will most likely be out for 2-3 weeks for 2x shoulder charges it seems.

After 14 rounds my summary:

Cons:
No speed
Defence as fullback suspect

Pros:
Great Step
Fantastic under the high ball
Awesome passing game
Can kick uncatchable bombs

I think his speed will come, I went back to watch some of the south’s games last year and he wasn’t this slow, was more agile as well. He needs to put on some size as well.

I wish he'd kick more often. That torpedo was a ripper.

the most unkind bounce i have ever seen as well

it is a very good summary from Mike

however, as per a previous post i think he can take his game to the next level over the offseason with a FULL boot camp with Madge, he is only young and obviously has much talent

Not everyone has the same kick-return strategy. Hunt's kamikaze returns were spectacular but risky, Doueihi seems to size-up each return on what's in front of him. Yesterday the Dogs usually presented a pretty good defensive chase line and Doueihi took a cautious approach that allowed him to find the ground without getting driven back.
On the occasion the chase is not great he stepped and accelerated.
To me it's just a sign that he's a pretty smart footballer and I hope he's given plenty of time to develop in the #1. That will allow us to focus on other recruitment areas.

There are a lot of different types of fullbacks with different skill sets. The best, like Slater and Tedesco have all the skills but even Ponga and Turbo have weak spots.

In attack Ponga plays as 5/8 on the left, Pearce plays as an on the ball halfback in the middle, controls the game and is the support player in the middle. They have a game plan that uses the strengths of both players and covers their weaknesses.

The Tigers halves that mostly stick to their sides with the 9 controlling point of attack. They do occasionally use Doueihi on both sides as a playmaker outside the halves and it has worked well. What we are missing is a support player in the middle.

There are many ways to use your 1,6,7,9 and 13 the main thing is to have someone covering all the jobs that need to be done.

This interests me. Elijah Taylor should have been that ball-playing 13. He was in 2016, then once Jason Taylor was sacked, we never saw it again.

he needs speed... defence will improve if he can cover plenty of ground with ease

Think you’re spot on. He makes good metres running the footy back too.
