Alex McKinnon

Very Sad News :frowning:

He is a strong kid and I'm sure we will all be amazed at his achievements in the future…

Stay Strong Kid!

wow. this really is so sad. in an instant this poor young guys life took a 180 degree change for the worse. i feel so badly for all parties involved and hope mckinnon is well looked after.

hard to fathom something like this happening.

felt sick in the stomach when I heard his diagnosis tonight,,,I really feel for Alex and his family…such a tradgey

Simon Dwyer just posted on facebook:

I would like to wish Alex McKinnon all the best in his recovery don't worry about what the doctor's tell you anything is possible defy the odds & walk again my friend

It's moments like this which show the rest of us once again, we should not take anything for granted.

It sounds like Alex is a terrific young man which for some reason makes this even more of a tragedy.

Here's hoping the rugby league world can support Alex in what will be a very difficult journey.

It's past due to significantly overhaul both the actions of the tackler/s and their number. It may well be as simple as a 'no lifting' edict and limiting tacklers to a total of two. There's nothing appealing about three defenders manhandling one man in possession. It does not represent a contest, it's the RL version of assault

I'm so sorry to hear of this news, we can only pray for a miracle. Best wishes young man.

To be frank, with the way the game has evolved with the wrestle and such I'm surprised it has taken this long for a player to get injured with such severity. It seems with such a cruel twist of fate it was also after the game took measures to speed up the PTB and minimise the wrestle.

Terrible news. Can't imagine what could be going through his head ATM. Trying to move his hand but not able to move it. Horrific sight.

Needs all the mental help from mates, family , club, NRL and community.

Hope he is given the space by the media and the optimism by the doctors to get his head straight and fight through this.

Not sure whether he nerves will ever grow back but hearing about him from various news articles he sounds like a tough bloke so he should have the mental toughness in case he remains like this for the rest of his life.

Jordan McLean needs to be looked after as well.

Best wishes to all involved. Physical stuff is done- now it's all about the mental toughness.

This is for another thread…not this one

Terrible news. Let's hope rugby league as a community can come together and help give Alex and his family all the support required.

Absolutely tragic for the family. Despite it being a hazard of the game you'd never expect something as horrific as this.

As someone said above, McLean needs to be looked after too. You never just quite know what kind of impact this could have on him knowing he was the guy who put McKinnon in a wheelchair. Last thing we want is another Mosese Fotuaika.

100% still needs 8-10 weeks though. so he can feel much better being punished other than feeling that he got away from it kinda thing. May also ruin his life altogether as well. It's a hard one hey stoner .

It's tragic :frowning:

I hope we never see another incident like that again.

The coaches are a source of a lot of these problems, as is the rules interpretations and refereeing. Both of those are what is primarily responsible for this.

Many people observed that the new Storm tactic with the ruck changes was to get numbers in the tackle, hold the ball carrier up and spin them around 180\. What if what happened was a poorly executed defensive technique being taught by the Storm?

And there is also the rumoured advice to players to dive head first to win a penalty, with I believe Fifita coming out and saying something along those lines. I don't think McKinnon was doing that, he was doing a reflex action whilst been disorientated in the tackle. But all the same if the coaches are teaching that, then it has to stop in case it does lead to injury..

Then we have spineless refereeing who nitpick for minor and entirely subjective incidents in the ruck to blow their whistle on, whilst seemingly ignoring countless acts of dangerous and foul play. And of course a refereeing establishment who submitted to lobbyist coaches to allow wrestling to enter the game..

A large part of that $50 million saved up will and should go to McKinnon and his family. If he is a complete quadriplegic then that figure should easily reach $20m.

Also investigate Bellamy, and get all coaches to come together on all levels within the NRL to air their potentially dangerous coaching practices so that they can be eliminated..

I also think those involved in the tackle shouldn't play NRL again, but should get as much help and aid as possible to establish lives and careers outside football. No one wants to see a double tragedy.

Ill be the first to say it and i believe i wont have one person support me but thats ok.

Im in the minority that believes the injury suffered by a player must come into account when looking at the punishment for the offender. In this case its my opinion that Alex Mckinnon ducked his head as a result of Mclean putting his hands between Alex's legs, causing the injury. Mclean has deliberately done an illegal act that has resulted in a players life being ruined. Therefore Mclean should never be allowed to play the game again. Yes he didnt deliberately intend to hurt Alex, but these rules are in place to prevent these injury's so when u deliberately break these rules then i have no sympathy for u. The injury must be taken into account.

The NRL will bring out all these experts that will claim it was just one of those things based on a number of ramblings to save themselves from a tough decision.

Like i said, i expect zero support but i dont care about that or Mclean.

Shattering news and my thoughts are with the young man and his family. Just goes to show how anyone's life can change in an instant, very sad. Miracles can happen though and I wish him all the best with his recovery.
