Aloiai

A lot of people seem to blaming the player or his agent. At what point do we consider why this is happening every year?

Other clubs seem to keep this stuff in house. Looks what's happened with JAC and even Dragons with Saab.

To make matters worse, our Chairman has gone on record.

Dont think Manly would be doing anything untoward it probably just comes down to the amount of available cap space for next year that they can include in the offer.

@tiga4eva has been conspicuously absent of late.

His work here is done !

It’s easy, don’t release him and play him in first grade.
If he dogs it - nobody will sign him next year
If he refuses to play he sits it out and we sue him next year for not fulfilling his contract obligations.
No matter what, next year he won’t be getting a contract from us and a few other clubs will think twice before signing him too.
He or his manager have not thought through the whole - never wearing jersey again comment.

Only way he can recoup is by denying he said anything.

I don't know how bringing Matterson into the discussion while choosing to ignore the fact we are undergoing yet another retention blunder helps. I couldn't care less about player reputations once they leave our club but rather more how we can change ours re: our retention/recruitment.

I'm also pretty certain Twal is actually his best mate, so does that mean we'll lose him? Who cares if players wish to follow suit of other former players. The concern should be more focused on our most problematic issues. Prospects won't care about the reasons either however will more likely question our treatment of players.

No retention blunder from listening to Lee H on radio we made offers back and forth and then Josh A has said i am leaving as he has a bigger offer from club x
This is just like Matterson and listening to Lee H we will not be releasing players anymore
Josh you are out of luck

Look I get all that but it's not how it's gonna play out in the media. We all have a loyalty to the club and personal bias but this doesn't help the perception of the club's retention and recruitment one bit. Which is my whole point.

So you would what, have the club pay well more than they were prepared to just for the sake of keeping him for the optics of how it would play out in the media? That would just replace a perceived poor recruitment and retention strategy with an actual poor recruitment and retention policy...

No.
I think I've been pretty clear in stating I only care about our retention and recruitment reputation and image, and building the team to a stronger position. IDC about media perception but more what prospective targets think.

I'm sick of seeing the club get shafted. Stand firm on Aloiai and the jelly-spine tossers will give us a wide berth in future. Win-win.

Melbourne hung onto JAC because it didn't work for them for whatever reason to let him go. They had a contract and they enforced it. Granted they have the on field success to make it more palatable for JAC but there's no reason why on-field success should factor into a legally binding contract being enforced, it goes back to my previous comment that if you don't want to find yourself in this situation, then chance the risk and play year on year. They won't do that though because you're only ever one tackle away from a career ending injury.

Melbourne is a successful club, we aren't. Again, it's not a one off. I hate to bring this up but remember the Mosese Fotuaika and BMM incident? I'm definitely not blaming the club and we may have done everything in our power to support him but somewhere player welfare or player management is letting us down.

Since when is greed a player welfare issue? Why is that character flaw the responsibility of the club to manage?

"Oh you were offered more money, sure go on take it, we wouldn't want you to be unhappy. Yeah, nah don't worry, we'll figure out a replacement in a small field of players on the open market. Enjoy Brookie mate."

No but it falls under the player management category.

Well, we need to reject his release request, and help him to "manage" his obligations under his contract.

Greed is a player management issue... Good grief what a cop out...

So is it always that we seem to find all the greedy players or they turn greedy once they're here?

There aren't many players that leave us on good terms either.

This nonsense has been going on too long and not just in isolation to our club.
NRL should step in and do something about player managers orchestrating these games ..... and introduce annual player transfer period with strict rules and penalties around breach of contract.
As far as Aloiai leaving for reported $600-700 contract ..... good luck to Manly but complete waste of money for mine.

Manly must have a lot on minimum.
The PLayer Managers churning their clients is a real issue because their defence is “clients self interest.”

This really is an NRL problem when a club can approach a player at the beginning of their last season's contract for the following season.
Approaches should only be before June 30 for a 6 week window prior, with only 2 immediate trades per clubs allowed with no financial upgrade to the player for the remainder of that year.

Mate he was the go to guy all year spruiking the club and defending the coach. Now it's he'll never wear the strip again?

Why do you think they leave on bad terms? You think it might have something to do with the fact they want out of a contract they willfully signed and the club dare hold them to it?

You may be right, I'm not disputing that. But the fact is it's not a one off. We need to accept that and change something. We are missing something. Moses, Teddy, Woods, Cleary, Matterson, Benji, Farah- going back last 5 years- the common denominator is players aren't happy here! They crap on us on the way out.

Working out of demountables every day will eventually wear thin. New facilities can't come soon enough. At the least it'll be a moral booster

100%

Make him play without a jersey as well.

I’m going to base my opinion on Lee with the way he handles Josh’s contract.
The guy would know law/contracts better than any of these player managers.

Our club can’t catch a break can it. Of all the luck, it’s always us. An off season drama every off season since 2015. You don’t have to be angry about it (I’m not) but your head is in the sand if you think the club aren’t unprofessional. The CEO can’t even be bothered dressing and grooming himself for God’s sake. But it’s the players fault. I don’t think so.

As the SMH article states Ryan Moronson pulled the same move before. And Moses and Tapau before. It’s a direct outcome of our willingness to rollover whenever a player or rival club wants something. I’m gladdened by the language we’re using so far. Josh can decide if he wants to sit on his bum for a year or he can play out his contract.
