National Unfriend Day is a day for today, 17 November, in every sense of the word, where under the ever burgeoning weight of social media, occasionally parting ways with unfamiliar faces can be refreshingly liberating.
Ever scrolled through your media feed and realised you don’t recognise half the names popping up in your News Feed?
Friend list at 1000 people and counting? Is your wall cluttered with posts you don’t care about from people you don’t remember? Then National Unfriend Day is just what the doctor ordered.
A sort of de-cluttering of the soul (or at least your social network) that doesn’t cut it for you anymore.
Freedom comes in many forms – a time to streamline our internet experiences, allowing us to use our profiles to keep in touch with people we really care about, and preserving the true definition of ‘friend.’
Celebrate National Unfriend Day by taking advantage of this judgement-free opportunity to ditch the total strangers on our ‘friend’ lists!
On a slightly more serious note, National Unfriend Day can in fact be a good time to think about the amount of superficial relationships people engage in the era of social media, ‘likes’, ‘retweets’, etc. Are we possibly neglecting the people in our life who really love us and care about our well-being while we wither away sitting in front of our laptop for hours on end?
Habits are always evolving – as are our awareness of who really mean something to us – not the erratic, non-connections of moments long lost.
Just do it – “unfriend wisely” that is!

World Pancreatic Cancer Day is held on 20 November promotes awareness, education and information regarding this serious disease.
Pancreatic cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the pancreas grow in an uncontrolled way. It is among the 10 most common cancers in both men and women in Australia.
Today (and throughout November) is traditionally marked as pancreatic cancer awareness month designed to draw attention to the importance of early diagnosis, access to innovative treatments, and support for patients and their families.
With almost 500,000 people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer every year worldwide, along with a very low survival rate, a day like today is crucial in raising awareness and promoting some light in the research tunnel towards a cure.
With this year’s theme, “A day of action, A world of difference”, the idea behind this event is to encourage medical professionals, researchers, healthcare organizations, and more, into action toward a new outlook for pancreatic cancer patients.
Pancreatic cancer is the eighth most common cancer in Australia, with over 4,500 diagnoses annually. Organizations like Cancer Australia and the National Pancreatic Cancer Roadmap are working to improve outcomes through a focus on prevention, early detection, and research.
The five-year survival rate is low, at less than 13%. Over 80% of those diagnosed are over the age of 60, and it affects men and women at similar rates.
Pancreatic cancer has the highest mortality rate of all the major cancers. Earlier diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is the best chance for survival. Pancreatic cancer has subtle symptoms that make it difficult to diagnose. Only about 10% of pancreatic cancers are hereditary, so family history is not necessarily an indicator
The support colour for this disease is PURPLE, so get on board by wearing a purple support ribbon, donning a purple shirt, flying a purple flag, changing social media profile pictures to reflect purple ribbons, or engaging with the colour purple in some other way.
